  • Optical fibers are going to be used for telecommunication, image fibers, sensors under irradiation in nuclear power plants and various irradiation facilities. Especially, Temperature detection sensors using Raman light scattering, temperature or strain sensors using fiber gratings, magnet-optical sensors using photo-magnetic effect, are already commercialized. However, When fibers are exposed to ionizing radiation, color centers are formed in fibers which reduces their light transmission, and it is limited in applying under radiation environments. In this study, $Co^{60}$ gamma-ray induced optical attenuation on Ge-doped single mode(SM) fiber has been measured. Gamma-ray is irradiated for 4hours at the dose rate of 0.5kGy/hr, 2kGy/hr, 8kGy/hr. Consequently, gamma-ray induced loss based on radiation effects in Ge-doped SM fiber occur precisely. Furthermore, dose rate effect that the higher dose rate in the same total dose, the more increase loss of optical fiber and annealing effect that the higher the loss after irradiation, the more increase the recovery rate of the loss are observed in the fiber. This results plan to make use of bases in the study of the radiation-hardened optical fiber.

  • We investigated how combining different types of images with written text affects the comprehension of health related information. The types of images were picture, photograph, and X-ray. 47 four year college students were recruited for the experiment. The independent variables in this study included information presentation format, vividness of image, and the degree of awareness for the disease. The dependent variables were recognition and recall for information. The results showed that the information with images in recognition and recall had higher score than information with written text only. In regard to the effect of different kinds of images on comprehension of health information, information with picture had higher score than the information with photograph and X-ray. The vividness of image were found to work as a negative factor on the recognition of information. Finally, the degree of awareness of disease also failed to have any significant effect on subjects' recall and recognition. This research has implications for the contents design of health related website.

  • The ultimate behavior of a reinforced concrete hyperbolic paraboloid saddle shell under uniformly distributed vertical load is investigated using an inelastic, large displacement finite-element program originally developed at North Carolina State University. Unlike with the author's previous study which shows that the saddle shell possesses a tremendous capacity to redistribute the stresses, introducing tension stiffening in the model the cracks developed are no longer through cracks and formed as primarily bending cracks. Even though with small tension stiffening effect, the behavior of the shell is changed markedly from the one without tension stiffening effect. The load-deflection curves are straight and the slope of the curves is quite steep and remains unchanged with varying the tension stiffening parameters. The failure of the shell took place quite suddenly in a cantilever mode initiated by a formation of yield lines in a direction parallel to the support-to-support diagonal. The higher the tension stiffening parameters the higher is the ultimate load. The present study shows that the ultimate behavior of the shell primarily depends on the concrete tensile characteristics, such as tensile strength (before cracking) and the effective tension stiffening (after cracking). As the concrete characteristics would vary over the life of the shell, a degree of uncertainty is involved in deciding a specified ultimate strength of the saddle shell studied. By the present study, however, the overload factors based on ACI 318-95 are larger than unity for all the cases studied except that the tension stiffening parameter is weak by 3 with and without the large displacement effect, which shows that the Lin-Scordelis saddle shell studied here is at least safe.

  • Present paper focuses on the modeling of size effect on the compressive strength of normal concrete with the application of Discrete Element Method (DEM). Test specimens with different size and shape were cast and uniaxial compressive strength test was performed on each sample. Five different concrete mixes were used, all belonging to a different normal strength concrete class (C20/25, C30/37, C35/45, C45/55, and C50/60). The numerical simulations were carried out by using the PFC 5 software, which applies rigid spheres and contacts between them to model the material. DEM modeling of size effect could be advantageous because the development of micro-cracks in the material can be observed and the failure mode can be visualized. The series of experiments were repeated with the model after calibration. The relationship of the parallel bond strength of the contacts and the laboratory compressive strength test was analyzed by aiming to determine a relation between the compressive strength and the bond strength of different sized models. An equation was derived based on Bazant's size effect law to estimate the parallel bond strength of differently sized specimens. The parameters of the equation were optimized based on measurement data using nonlinear least-squares method with SSE (sum of squared errors) objective function. The laboratory test results showed a good agreement with the literature data (compressive strength is decreasing with the increase of the size of the specimen regardless of the shape). The derived estimation models showed strong correlation with the measurement data. The results indicated that the size effect is stronger on concretes with lower strength class due to the higher level of inhomogeneity of the material. It was observed that size effect is more significant on cube specimens than on cylinder samples, which can be caused by the side ratios of the specimens and the size of the purely compressed zone. A limit value for the minimum size of DE model for cubes and cylinder was determined, above which the size effect on compressive strength can be neglected within the investigated size range. The relationship of model size (particle number) and computational time was analyzed and a method to decrease the computational time (number of iterations) of material genesis is proposed.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate curing degree of three dual-cure resin cements with the elapsed time in self-cure and dual-cure mode by means of the repeated measure of micro-hardness. Materials and Methods: Two dual-cure self-adhesive resin cements studied were Maxcem Elite (Kerr), Rely-X Unicem (3M ESPE) and one conventional dual-cure resin cement was Rely-X ARC resin cement (3M ESPE). Twenty specimens for each cements were made in Teflon mould and divided equally by self-cure and dual-cure mode and left in dark, $36^{\circ}C$, 100% relative humidity conditional-micro-hardness was measured at 10 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 3 hr, 6 hr, 12 hr and 24 hr after baseline. The results of micro-hardness value were statistically analyzed using independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA with multiple comparisons using Scheffe's test. Results: The micro-hardness values were increased with time in every test groups. Dual-cure mode obtained higher micro-hardness value than self-cure mode except after one hour of Maxcem. Self-cured Rely-X Unicem showed lowest value and dual-cured Rely-X Unicem showed highest value in every measuring time. Conclusions: Sufficient light curing to dual-cure resin cements should provided for achieve maximum curing.

  • In this proposed work new finite element model for multi-delaminated plates is proposed. In the current analysis procedures of multi-delaminated plates, plate element based on Mindlin plate theory is used in order to obtain accurate results of out-of-plane displacement of thick plate. And for delaminated region, plate element based on Kirchhoff plate theory is considered. To satisfy the displacement continuity conditions, displacement vector based on Kirchhoff theory is transformed to displacement of transition element. The numerical results show that the effect of delaminations on the modal parameters of delaminated composites plates is dependent not only on the size, the location and the number of the delaminations but also on the mode number and boundary conditions. Kirchhoff based model have higher natural frequency than Mindlin based model and natural frequency of the presented model is closed to Mindlin based model.

  • The V2F turbulence model, which has shown very good performance in several test cases at low speeds, has been applied to supersonic ramp flow with 20. corner angle at the free stream Mach number of 2.79. The flow is known to manifest strong shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions. As a comparative study, low-Reynolds k-ε models are also considered. While the V2F model predicts wall-pressure distribution well, it relatively predicts larger separation bubble and higher skin-friction after the reattachment than the experimental data. Although the ellpticity of f equation is the characteristics of incompressible flows, the converged solutions are acquired in the compressible flow with shock waves. The effect of the realizability constraints used in the model is also examined. In contrast to the result of impinging jet flows, the realizability bounds proposed by Durbin deterioate the overall solutions of the supersonic ramp flow.

  • The lean premixed technique has been proven very efficient in reducing NOx emissions from gas turbine combustors. However combustion instability is susceptible to occur in lean premixed combustor. So laboratory-scale dump combustor was used to understanding the underlying mechanisms causing combustion instabilities. In this study, tests were conducted at atmospheric pressure and inlet air was up to $360^{\circ}C$ with natural gas. The observed instability was a longitudinal mode with a frequency of ${\sim}341.8Hz$. At selected unstable conditions, phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were captured to investigate flame structure with various equivalence ratio. Combustion instability was observed to occur at higher value of equivalence ratio(>0.69). This study was performed to investigate the effects of equivalence ratio and fuel split measuring NOx and acoustic wave. The results reveal the effect of fuel-air unmixedness on lean premixed combustor.

  • A two-stage fed-batch fermentation was carried out to increase xylitol productivity by Candida tropicalis. The first stage for cell growth was performed in the pH-stat and continuous fed-batch modes. The higher cell growth and lower ethanol production obtained in the fed-batch mode where the growth medium was fed when pH of culture broth increased over 5.7. And also the effect of oxygen transfer on xylitol production was investigated by changing agitation speed under 0.5 vvm of aeration. The maximum xylitol productivity and yield were obtained at 500 rpm of agitation.

  • This paper deals with the shear strengthening effect of RC beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets. Fifteen strengthened RC beams(including control beam) were experimentally evaluated to determine improvements in shear strength. The major parmeters of experiment variables are fiber sheet strengthening ratios and strengthening methods of fiber sheet(I-S, I-W, U-S, U-W type). Reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber sheets were tested under the combined control of load. Considering strengthening ratios and strengthening methods of fiber sheet, shear capacity and failure mode of test specimens were evaluated. The results show that shear capacity of beams strengthened with fiber sheet is about $28.82\%$ in IS type, $20.49\%$ in IW type, $26.04\%$ in US type, $28.70\%$ in UW type higher than the strength of control beam.
