Friction Stir Welding is a welding technique for metal materials that utilizes the heat generated by friction between the material to be welded and the welding tool that rotates at high speed. In this study, a numerical analysis method was used to analyze the change in the internal temperature of the welded material during friction stir welding. As the welding target material, AZ31 magnesium alloy was applied and the welding phenomenon was considered a flow characteristic, in which a melting-pool was formed. FLUENT was used as the numerical tool to perform the flow analysis. For flow analysis of the welding process, the welding material was assumed to be a high viscosity Newtonian fluid, and the boundary condition of the welding tool and the material was considered to be the condition that friction and slippage occur simultaneously. Analyses were carried out for various rotational speeds and the translational moving speed of the welding tool as variables. The analysis results showed that the higher the rotational speed of the welding tool and the slower the welding tool movement speed, the higher the maximum temperature in the material increases. Moreover, the difference in the rotational speed of the welding tool has a greater effect on the temperature change.

This study examined the braking characteristics of a heavy haul freight train with P4a distribution valves applied to domestic high-speed freight trains. A freight train was composed of 50 cars, which is twice the normal operation. A braking test was performed to confirm the characteristics of the braking of a heavy haul. The brake cylinder pressures were measured for emergency and service braking on the 1st, 10th, 20th, 30th, and 50th cars. Because the brake signal is transmitted to the pressure through the braking tube connected to the end of the train, the rear vehicle is braking later than the vehicle ahead. Therefore, it is necessary to predict the brake pressures in all cars in a train to supplement the results of the limited tests and calculate the braking distance. The pressure in each car was determined using empirical models of linear interpolation, stepwise, and exponential models, which provided reliable information. The predictive results of the empirical models were compared with the measured results, and the exponential model was predicted relatively accurately. These results are expected to contribute to the safe operation of heavy haul freight trains and can be used to predict the braking distance and calculate the level of impact between vehicles during braking.

Recent advances in computer technology have brought more dependence on software to railway systems and changed to computer systems. Hence, the reliability and safety assurance of the vital software running on the embedded railway system is going to tend toward very critical task. Accordingly, various software test and validation activities are highly recommended in the international standards related railway software. In this paper, we presented an automated analysis tool and standard for software testing coverage in railway system, and presented its result of implementation. We developed the control flow analysis tool estimating test coverage as an important quantitative item for software safety verification in railway software. Also, we proposed judgement standards due to railway S/W Safety Integrity Level(SWSIL) based on analysis of standards in any other field for utilizing developed tool widely at real railway industrial sites. This tool has more advantage of effective measuring various test coverages than other countries, so we can expect railway S/W development and testing technology of real railway industrial sites in Korea.

This study will observe the following subjects based on the railroad: First, the development of St. Pancreas Station, which is the gateway to London from other Europe continent, and King's Cross Station, which connects all the intercity within London. Second, the planning characteristic of urban regeneration case which was driven from Camden district, the center of King's Cross Central, which is located in between the two stations, St. Pancreas and King's Cross. Third, based on the the two stations and urban regeneration, this study attempts to investigate the direction of urban regenerating plan and its detailed strategy. As a result, King's Cross Station, St. Pancreas Station and the King's Cross Central area, which is an adjacent area from the two stations, were a slum for a long time. However, the two close stations played a role as the United Kindom and London's railroad network by sharing the common denominator of having the international high-speed railway among the Europe continent and being the connection of National railroads within London. Eventually, based on such potential of railroad traffic, King's Cross Central area was newly regenerated. The consequence of this study has shown that not only the physical modernization of buildings, implementation of compact railroad network supporting both ground and underground of each area or traffic connection was organized in London, but also secured the pedestrian way for easier transfer and planned and allocated facilities by considering citizen's publicness and multilateral use.

Transport Social Overhead Capital refers to public utilities necessary for a nation's basic economic activities, and is divided into roads, railway, subway, ports and so on. It is important to be able to provide these SOC in the right place at the right time to enhance productivity and competitiveness of a nation. In this study, correlation and factor analysis on countries' socioeconomic and transport indicators were performed in order to understand the need for expansion of SOCs including railway, and to identify the impact they have on national competitiveness(productivity). As a result, GDP showed high correlativity(0.59~0.99) with factors such as population, land area, extension of available railroad, and road extension. Specifically, through the analysis of Russia's urban transport system and comparison between socioeconomic indices and SOCs of OECD countries, it was examined that how increasing transport infrastructure investments could enhance national competitiveness. In conclusion, opening new Light Rail greatly affects the growth of GDP followed by the increasing extension of available railroad. Furthermore, if available railroad extension is increased by 10 % from 2014, assuming high speed tram is opened, GDP will likely increase by 21.6%.

A joint displacement resistance evaluation method for selecting waterproofing materials in railway bridge decks is proposed. The displacement range for an evaluation is determined by finite element method (FEM) analysis of a load case based on an existing high-speed PSC Girder Box railroad bridge structure. The FEM analysis results were used to calculate the minimum joint displacement range to be applied during testing (approximately 1.5 mm). For the evaluation, four commonly used waterproofing membrane types, cementitious slurry coating (CSC), polyurethane coating system (PCS), self-adhesive asphalt sheet (SAS), and composite asphalt sheet (CAS), were tested, with five specimens of each membrane type. The joint displacement width range conditions, including the minimum displacement range obtained from FEM analysis, were set to be the incrementing interval, from 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 mm. The proposal for the evaluation criteria and the specimen test results demonstrated how the evaluation method is important for the sustainability of high-speed railway bridges.

In this study, to examine the causes of cracks in continuously reinforced concrete tracks (CRCTs) and the main factors affecting cracking, a field survey on the status of cracks and crack patterns in the Gyeong-bu high speed line was conducted, and the crack patterns of CRCT due to the temperature difference between the top of the slab (TCL) and the bottom of the subbase (HSB) and the drying shrinkage of concrete were predicted by a nonlinear finite element model considering the structure of CRCT. The results of the numerical analysis show that cracks will be developed at the interface between the sleeper and the TCL, and under the sleeper due to the temperature difference and concrete shrinkage. This corresponds well to the crack locations found in the field. Also, it is found that the most significant factors are the coefficient of thermal expansion with respect to the temperature difference, and the drying shrinkage strain with respect to shrinkage. According to the results, the reinforcement ratio should be carefully determined considering the structures of CRCT because the crack spacing is not always proportional to the reinforcement ratio due to the sleepers embedded in the TCL.
Recently, a large reduction in domestic aviation demand had roughly shown in the range between 34% and 75% in east central and western corridor of Korea. The reasons for the drop in air traffic demand were the provisioning of several new highway serveces and the national economic difficulties. Since April 2004, moreover, the Korea Train Express(KTX) was operated between Seoul and Daegu in the first phrase of 293Km in KTX operational distance and 258Km in air route distance. The operation of KTX significantly impacted air traffic volume, particularly on the overlapped air routes with KTX routes. This study analyzed the effects on air traffic demand in accordance with the opening of KTX by applying the Stated Preference (SP) survey method, the survey conducted prior to 8 months of the KTX initiative. Also, the comparison of the decreased demand forecast by SP analysis and actual revealed traffic volume during two months service after inauguration of KTX was conducted. The Seoul-Daegu route was analysed using the 3 variables considered access and egress time, fare rate, operational frequency. The result obtained from the analysis showed that air users would be preferred only 14%. Comparatively, however, the actual revealed air passengers after the opening KTX were remained 28%, The less "decreased demand" was caused by the instability of the KTX's operation in the initial stage. Therefore, small numbers of passenger were preferable to airservices rather than high speed railroad service.
To relieve congestion in the current system of intercity transportation, the Korea decided in 1990 to construct a high-speed railroad between Seoul and Busan and it is now in operation. This new mode of transportation significantly cut travel time between major cities and a trip from Seoul to the southeastern port of Busan. Since the KTX opening, average daily passenger numbers on both the Gyeongbu and Honam lines have increased about 1.3 fold over 2003 levels. As of December 2004, the KTX trains are carrying about 81,000 people a day. On KTX routes, the daily number of airline passengers dropped. Express long-distance bus traffic also dropped by 20% to 30%, while that on short-distance routes (100km or less) increased by about 20%. These figures clearly indicate that the Korean transportation network is becoming railroad-centric. However, the number of KTX passengers is fewer than anticipated possibly due to the Korean economic downturn and the operation of the KTX will leave many existing Saemaul and Mugunghwa train sets idle, which will be put into operation for areas, not covered by the KTX. When all the existing major lines have been electrified, more high-speed rail services will be phased in using direct connections to maximize operational efficiency. And also, the dual management by KTX and conventional rail will be regarded as the promotion of the benefit of the public.
The objective of the study is to verify a new calibration equation of dry density and water contents with TDR. Since the traditional calibration equation was proposed, some research to develop a new calibration equation has been conducted by several researchers. As traditional calibration equation is difficult to be applied for loose soil and fine-grained soil at high water contents, this study developed a new calibration equation. Thus, this study introduces a new calibration equation and its applicability by comparing TDR test results with conventional test results. Based on the analyses, the calibration equation for water content has large error. A new calibration equation was proposed and it showed more than 95% accuracy for estimating water content of soil.
