Cobalt and VC powders were ball milled with M2 grade high speed steel powders under various ball to powder ratios. The powders milled under higher ball to powder ratio become finer, more irregular and have a broader size distribution, and thus possess a lower compressibility and a better sinterability regarding densification. Increasing the ball to powder ratio lowered the sintering temperature to obtain the density level necessary to isolate all the pores. Lowering the sintering temperature is very critical to maintain fine microstructure since grain and carbide coarsening are accelerated by higher sintering temperature due to more liquid phase formation. The powders obtained by ball milling at 20 to 1 ratio has the lowest compressibility but has the best sinterability, almost compatible to unmilled pure M2 powders. A sintered body over 97% theoretical density with fine microstructures having average grain size of ~10 microns was obtained from the powder by sintering at 1260 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour in vacuum. XRD results indicate that two types of carbides are mainly present in the sintered structure, MC and $M_{6}C$ type. The MC type carbides are more or less round shaped and mainly located at the grain boundaries whereas the $M_{6}C$ type are angular shaped and mainly located inside the grains.
BST thin films have a good thermal-chemical stability, insulating effect and variety of phases. However, BST thin films have problems of the aging effect and mismatch between the BST thin film and electrode. Also, due to the high defect density and surface roughness at grain boundarys and in the grains, which degrades the device performances. In order to overcome these weakness, we first applied the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process to the polishing of ferroelectric film in order to obtain a good planarity of electrode/ferroelectric film interface. BST ferroelectric film was fabricated by the sol-gel method. And then, we compared the structural characteristics before and after CMP process of BST films. We expect that our results will be useful promise of global planarization for FRAM application in the near future.
In this study, the bottom-up powder metallurgy and the top-down severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques for manufacturing bulk nanomaterials were combined in order to achieve both full density and grain refinement without grain growth of rapidly solidified Al-20 wt% Si alloy powders during consolidation processing. Continuous equal channel multi-angular processing (C-ECMAP) was proposed to improve low productivity of conventional ECAP, one of the most promising method in SPD. As a powder consolidation method, C-ECMAP was employed. A wide range of experimental studies were carried out for characterizing mechanical properties and microstructures of the ECMAP processed materials. It was found that effective properties of high strength and full density maintaining nanoscale microstructure are achieved. The proposed SPD processing of powder materials can be a good method to achieve fully density and nanostructured materials.
In this study, the BaTiO$\sub$3/ capacitor add to MnO$\sub$2/ like depressor and shifter were investigated for temperature or voltage compensation by structural and electrical analysis. The relative density of BCTM, generating poly crystall and formation of lattice defect, has a 90[%] over as the CaTiO$\sub$3/ come out to control grain size. The current density of BCTM2 increased non-ohmic in high-electric field but that BCTM3 and BCTM4 had a few changing. The BCTM3 and BCTM4 unformated grain boundary shown temperature compensation properties, so that the dielectric constant was low value. The curie point was near 140[.deg. C] in BCTM1 and BCTM4, but BCTM3 and BCTM4 not shown the curie point. It is found that the charging energy of BCTM4 was changed 6[%] according to rising temperature from room temperature to 417[K]. The formation of BaMnO$\sub$3/ was low dielectric constant to change frequency and temperature.
Role of CaO in the sintering of 12Ce-TZP ceramics was studied. The addition of small amounts of CaO increase the densification rate of 12Ce-TZP by altering lattice defect structure and the diffusion coefficient of the rate controlling species, namely cerium and zirconium cations. CaO also inhibits grain growth during sintering and allows the sintering process to proceed to theoretical density by maintaining a high diffusion flux of vacancies from the pores to the grain boundaries. The inhibition of grain growth is accomplished by the segregation of solute at the grain boundaries, causing a decrease in the grain boundary mobility. The segregation of calcium was revealed by AES study.
This study was carried out to compare artificial soil formulated by blending calcined clay and coconut peat with perlite, then to evaluate this soil as a perlite substitute for use as an artificial planting medium. To achieve this, a determination of the physico-chemical properties and it's effect on plant growth were conducted by comparing those with large perlite grains and small grains. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The bulk density was 0.41g/㎤. This density was lower than that of field soil, but higher than that of large perlite grain(0.23g/㎤) and small grain(0.25g/㎤). The porosity, field capacity, and saturated hydraulic conductivity were 71.3%, 49.2%, and 3.8$\times$10-2cm/s, respectively. The air-permeability, water holding capacity, and drainage were better than or equal to that both large and small perlite grain. 2) It was near-neutral in reaction(pH=6.6). It had a high organic carbon content(65.8g/kg) and a low available phosphoric acid content(84.7mg/kg). It was similar to crop soil in cation exchange capacity(11.4cmol/kg). It had a low exchangeable calcium content(0.71cmol/kg), a low exchangeable magnesium content(0.68cmol/kg), a high exchangeable potassium content(2.54cmol/kg), and a high exchangeable sodium content(1.12cmol/kg). Except for the exchangeable potassium and sodium content, the chemical properties were better than or equal to both large and small grain perlite. The excessive exchangeable potassium or sodium content will inhibit plant growth. 3) In Experiment 1, the plant growth tended to be higher compared to that of large and small perlite gains. But in Experiment 2, it tended to be lower. This might be linked to the excessive exchangeable potassium or sodium content. 4) It could be considered as a renewable perlite substitute for greening of artificial soil. But, it would be necessary to leach the excessive exchangeable potassium or sodium to avoid the risk of inhibiting plant growth.
As compared with conventional sintering, rapid heating in microwave system could enhance sinterability and final properties of alumina with a very short sintering time. In this study microwave sintering was performed using zirconia brick as a reaction chamber which was positioned in a 2.45 GHz(700 W) multimode microwave cavity. Microwave-sintered alumina showed high density and smaller grain size than conventionally sintered alumina because the ratio of densification rate/grain growth rate was increased by rapid heating.
In this paper a structurally coupled and magnetically decoupled Ba-ferrite thin film medium is proposed to evade the superparamagnetic limit and reduce media noise. The proposed medium consists of ferrimagnetic Ba-ferrite nano-grains (< 10 nm) and a non-magnetic grain boundary material. Magnetic grains are crystallographically matched with the grain boundary material. Spherical or cubic shaped Ba-ferrite particle is also proposed for above 100 Kfci particulate recording application.

Refractory materials, such as W and Mo, are very useful elements for use in high-temperature applications. But it is not easy to fabricat pure W and Mo with very high density and retaining very fine grain size because of their high melting point. In this paper, a newly developed method named as resistance sintering under ultra high pressure was use to fabricate pure fine-grained W and Mo. The microstructure was analysis by SEM. The sintering mechanism is primary analyzed. Basic physical property of these sintered pure W and Mo, such as hardness, bend strength, are tested.
In this paper, we discuss optimum process conditions of Hemispherical Grained Silicon formation for high density DRAM'S capacitor. In optimum process renditions, the phosphorous concentration, storage polysilicon deposition temperature and thickness of hemispherical grain silicon are in the range of 3.0-4.0E19atoms/㎤, 53$0^{\circ}C$ and 40(equation omitted), respectively. in the 64M bit DRAM capacitor using optimum process conditions, limit thickness of nitride is about 65(equation omitted). The results obtained in this study are applicable to process control and HSG-Si formation for high reliability and high density DRAM's capacitor.
