  • Due to the development of the communication technology and the high-performance mobile device, the number of video streaming service user has been increasing. Video streaming services in the restricted network environments need error control to support users for the Ultra High Definition(UHD) video delivery. Packet-level FEC method was used to control the error for delay-sensitive video service, but it has a defect in huge occupation of network resources by redundant packets. In this paper, we proposed a packet-level FEC algorithm which maintains the video quality by previous FEC methods and also reduces the occupation of network resource in the restricted network environments. The proposed algorithm controls the redundant rate with using the delivery characteristic of the video coding technology, and improves the efficiency of network resources by reducing the traffic by around 33% in comparison with the previous FEC methods.

  • Frame rate up-conversion (FRUC) algorithm is an image interpolation technology that improves the frame rate of moving pictures. This solves problems such as screen shake or blurry motion caused by low frame rate video in high-definition digital video systems, and provides viewers with a more free and smooth visual experience. In this paper, we propose a video compression technique using deep learning-based FRUC algorithm. The proposed method compresses and transmits after excluding some images from the original video, and uses a deep learning-based interpolation method in the decoding process to restore the excluded images, thereby compressing them with high efficiency. In the experiment, the compression performance was evaluated using the decoded image and the image restored by the FRUC algorithm after encoding the video by skipping 1 or 3 pages. When 1 and 3 sheets were excluded, the average BD-rate decreased by 81.22% and 27.80%. The reason that excluding three images has lower encoding efficiency than excluding one is because the PSNR of the image reconstructed by the FRUC method is low.

  • As studies on ubiquitous computing are actively conducted, desire for various services, including image transmission storage, search and remote monitoring. has been expanding into mobile environment as well as to PCs. while CCTV (closed circuit TV) and un DVR (Digital video Recording) are used in places where security service such as intrusion detection system is required, these are high-end equipment. So it is not easy for ordinary users or household and small-sized companies to use them. Besides, they are difficult to be carried and camera solution for mobile device does not support high-quality function and provides low-definition of QVGA for picture quality. Therefore, in this study, design and implementation of embedded system of high-definition image transmission for ubiquitous mobile device which is not inferior to PC or DVR are described. To this end, usage of dedicated CPU for mobile device and design and implementation of MPEG-4 H/W CODEC also are examined. The implemented system showed excellent performance in mobile environment, in terms of speed, picture quality.

  • Recently for the transfer of large size video file between sites for high-definition craft editing used by broadcasting company the Public Network is used a lot. In the IP Public Network with QoS(Quality-of-Service) not guaranteed, degradation of performance has several causes. In this paper, we have analyzed the causes of low performance to transfer a large size HD video file in long distance, in order to maximize the effectiveness, the high efficiency network could be implemented enabling the highspeed of HD video file using the connection with networks between hosts through packet creation and multi-session of Parallel TCP. We survey the result of high speed transfer system and verify the efficient transfer method using Public IP Network for large HD video file transfer in broadcasting cooperation.

  • In this paper, we propose a world's first programmable video processing platform for video quality enhancement of 8K ($7680{\times}4320$) UHD (Ultra High Definition) TV at 60 frames per second. To support huge computation and memory bandwidth of video quality enhancement for 8K resolution, the proposed platform has unique features like symmetric multi-cluster architecture for data partitioning, ring data-path between clusters to support data pipelining, on-the-fly processing architecture to reduce DDR bandwidth, flexible hardware to accelerating common kernel in video enhancement algorithms. In addition to those features, general programmability of SRP (Samsung reconfigurable processor) as main core of the proposed platform makes it possible to upgrade continuously video enhancement algorithm even after the platform is fixed. This ability is very important because algorithms for 8K DTV is under development. The proposed sub-system has been embedded into SoC (System on Chip) and new 8K UHD TV using the programmable SoC is expected at CES2015 for the first time in the world.

  • We demonstrate the transmission of uncompressed 4K videos over the photonics-based terahertz (THz) wireless link using a directly modulated distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD). For optical heterodyne mixing and data modulation, a DFB-LD was employed and directly modulated with a 5.94-Gb/s non-return-to-zero signal, which is related to a 6G-serial digital interface standard to support ultra-high-definition video resolution. We derived the optimal frequency of the THz carrier by varying the wavelength difference between DFB-LD output and Tunable LD output in the THz signal transmitter to obtain the best transmission performances of the uncompressed 4K video signals. Furthermore, we exploited the negative laser-to-filter detuning for the adiabatic chirp management of the DFB-LD by the intentional discrepancy between the center wavelength of the optical band-pass filter and the output wavelength of the DFB-LD. With the help of the abovementioned methods, we successfully transmitted uncompressed 4K video signals over the 2.3-m wireless transmission distance without black frames induced by time synchronization error.

  • In this paper, we propose the VLSI design of Multi-Format Video Decoder (MFD) to support video codec standards such as MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264 and VC-1. The target of the proposed MFD is the Full HD (High Definition) video processing needed for the high-end D-TV SoC (System-on-Chip). The size of the design is reduced by sharing the common large-size resources such as the RISC processor and the on-chip memory among the different codecs. In addition, a detachable architecture is introduced in order to easily add or remove the codecs. The detachable architecture preserves the stability of the previously designed and verified codecs. The size of the design is about 2.4 M gates and the operating clock frequency is 225MHz in the Samsung 65nm process. The proposed MFD supports more than Full-HD (1080p@30fps) video decoding, and the largest number of video codec standards known so far.

  • The latest video coding standard HEVC was developed by the joint work of JCT-VC(Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding) from ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG. The HEVC standard reduces the BD-Bitrate of about 50% compared with the H.264/AVC standard. However, using the various methods for obtaining the coding gains has increased complexity problems. The proposed method reduces the complexity of HEVC by using both CPU parallel processing and GPU-accelerated processing. The experiment result for UHD($3840{\times}2144$) video sequences achieves 15fps encoding/decoding performance by applying the proposed method. Sooner or later, we expect that the H/W speedup of data transfer rates between CPU and GPU will result in reducing the encoding/decoding times much more.

  • Wide deployment of high resolution video services leads to active studies on high speed video processing. Especially, prevalent employment of multi-core systems accelerates researches on high resolution video processing based on parallelization of multimedia software. In this paper, we propose a novel parallel H.264/AVC decoding scheme on a multi-core platform. Parallel H.264/AVC decoding is challenging not only because parallelization may incur significant synchronization overhead but also because software may have complicated dependencies. To overcome such issues, we propose a novel approach called Multi-Threaded Parallelization(MTP). In MTP, to reduce synchronization overhead, a separate thread is allocated to each stage in the pipeline. In addition, an efficient memory reuse technique is used to reduce the memory requirement. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we parallelized FFmpeg H.264/AVC decoder with the proposed technique using OpenMP, and carried out experiments on an Intel Quad-Core platform. The proposed design performs better than FFmpeg H.264/AVC decoder before the parallelization by 53%. We also reduced the amount of memory usage by 65% and 81% for a high-definition(HD) and a full high-definition(FHD) video, respectively compared with that of popular existing method called 2Dwave.
