This study observed downward long and short-wave radiant environment with selecting 4 areas which have different height in downtown and 1 suburban area to figure out the characteristic of radiant environment in each altitude. The purpose of this study is to collect the preliminary data for interpreting urban thermal environment in summer season by analyzing thermal characteristic of atmosphere in the upper of downtown. The results of this study are as follows. 1) The higher altitude has the lower temperature, and temperature difference was more huge in day time than night time. 2) The short wave radiation according to altitude was higher as altitude was high. 3) Generally, the higher altitude has the lower air temperature, and also the higher altitude has the lower downward long wave radiation by the atmospheric radiation. 4) The ratio short wave radiation of long wave radiation was lower as altitude was high. And the urbanization effect was higher as the ratio was low.

Freak waves in the ocean are recently drawing much attention as a natural disaster to ocean structures and navigating ships as well. Several observation data, among them the Draupner New Year Wave, show the very impressive feature of Freak waves whose wave height is up to three times as high as the significant wave height of surrounding waves, In addition, Freak wave appears as an isolated very high crest in somewhat stationary random waves of same order in their wavelengths. Bearing such characteristics in mind, one notices its extraordinary steepness. This strongly suggests that Freak wave is not long lived but transient nature on the whole. A great number of studies to explain these natures were published from both theoretical and numerical point of view. However it is not sure if they are applicable to actual ocean environment. In this paper, we deal with the results concerning abnormal and/or Freak waves from in-situ ocean wave data and point out several remarks to the problems lain behind the contributions in this context. A physical experiment is described to reinforce the subject discussed from the observation data.

The wave washer springs are widely used in non-return valves of fluid, especially in air check valves to confirm the rapid shut-off of valve propers. The stiffness of wave washer springs used in suction and exhaust valves of reciprocating air compressor play an important role on efficiency of the compressor. If the stiffness of the spring is too high, the pressure differences necessary to open the valves become high and the volumetric efficiency of cylinder decreasse. If the stiffness of the spring too low, the valve can not be closed rapidly and the inverse flow of air can take place. So, the optimum stiffness of valve spring is very important and it will be very helpful that the stiffness of wave washer springs to be used in suction and exhaust valves can be calculated in design stage of air compressor. In this paper the formula for calculating the spring constant of wave washer spring is introduced using bending and torsion theory of frames. The experiments are also carried out to measure the spring constants of several samples. It is proven that the calculated spring constants of wave washer springs are coincided well with measured values and that the formula presented in this paper for calculating the spring constants of wave washer spring is very useful for design of valves used in reciprocating air compressor.

Havelock was considered the wave resistance of a post extending vertically downwards through the water from the surface, its section by a horizontal plane being the same at all depths and having its breath small compared with its length. This enables us to elucidate certain points of interest in ship resistance. However, the ship has not infinte draft. So, the problem which is investigated in detail in this paper is the wave resistance of a mathematical quadratic model in a uniform stream. The author wishes to study the effect of viriation of draft. The form of the water-plane is varied while keeping in length and the cross sectional area constant. As a numerical example, we calculated the wave resistance for mathematical quadratic ship models. The results are compared with a post having infinite depth. The results are as follows; The models with finer ends have smaller wave resistance up to $V/\sqrt{L}=1.1{\sim}1.2$ than its mate with blunter ends, but above this speed the models with blunter ends have less wave resistance. According to the decrease of draft, the wave resistance gap between the models with blunter ends the models with finer ends decrease at high speed. In this case of T/L=0.025, the models with finer ends have less wave resistance than the models with blunter ends at high speed.

Incident wave angles are conventionally estimated by the directional spectrum analysis of wave data collected from in-situ sensors. The in-situ measurements are limited in monitoring incident wave angles in the wide surf zone, since the techniques are typically expensive, labor-intensive, and point-measuring. In this study, estimation of incident wave angles using wave crest features captured in digital video imagery is proposed to observe incident wave directions over the surf zone. Line signatures of wave crests having high image pixel intensities are extracted by moving an interrogation window to identify high intensity pixels in sequential video images. Wave angles are computed by taking the first derivative of the extracted crest signatures, i.e. local slope of the crest signatures in the two-dimensional physical plane. Compared to the wave angle estimates obtained by the directional spectrum analysis, video-based wave angle estimates show good agreements in general.

High temperature fatigue crack growth behavior of P92 and STS 316L steel were investigated under four load conditions using CT type specimens. Loading and unloading times for the low wave forms were combinations of 1 sec. and 50 sec., which were two symmetric wave forms and two unsymmetric wave forms. Their behaviors are characterized using ΔK parameter. In STS 316L, Crack growth rate generally increases as frequency decreases. However, sensitivity of the loading rate to crack growth rate was fecund to be far greater than that of the unloading time. It is because as loading time increases, creep occurs at crack tip causing the crack growth rate to increase. However creep does not occur at the crack tip even if the unloading time is increased. In P92 steel, crack growth rate showed same behavior as in STS 316L. But the increase in loading or unloading time made almost no difference in crack growth rate, suggesting that no significant creep occurs in P92 steel even though loading time increases. After conducting high temperature tensile tests and comparing high temperature fatigue crack growth rates under various wave forms, it was proved that P92 steel has not only good high temperature properties but also improved, better high temperature fatigue properties than STS 316L.

For the effective development or preservation of Tokdo, the natural environments in the ambient sea area should be well investigated. The wave deformations and wave breaking in the vicinity have much affected the bottom morphology of Tokdo as well as its ecological environment. The present study investigates the wave deformations and wave breaking through a numerical model. The final goal is to provide the fundamental wave data for the effective development or preservation of Tokdo in future. The extended mild slope equation was applied to Tokdo sea area for three different deep water wave conditions (S, SSE, NNE directions). The results showed that for the S and SSE directions the wave heights in the area between the east island and the west island were very low with the level of 1~2m, but for the NNE direction they appeared pretty high with 3~4m, In the sea area near the northwest of west island, the wave heights were low to be 1~3m for all three directions of deep water wave.
The governing equations of wave propagation in one dimension of elastic continuum materials are investigated by taking the influence of the initial stress into account. After a short review of the theory of elastic wave propagation in a rock mass with an initial stress, results indicate that the initial stress differentially influences P-wave and S-wave propagation. For example, when the initial stress is homogeneous, for the P-wave, the initial stress only affects the magnitude of the elastic coefficients, but for the S-wave, the initial stress not only influences the elastic coefficients but also changes the governing equation of wave propagation. In addition, the P-wave and S-wave velocities were measured for granite samples at a low initial stress state; the results indicate that the seismic velocities increase with the initial stress. The analysis of the previous data of seismic velocities and elastic coefficients in rocks under ultra-high hydrostatic initial stress are also investigated.

In this paper, we have designed and fabricated high conversion gain Q-band active sub-harmonic mixers for a receiver of millimeter wave wireless communication systems. The fabricated active sub-harmonic mixer uses 2nd harmonic signals of a low local oscillator (LO) frequency. The fabricated mixer was successfully integrated by using $0.1{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$GaAs pseudomorphic high electron mobility transistors (PHEMTs) and coplanar waveguide (CPW) structures. From the measurement, it shows that maximum conversion gain of 4.8 dB has obtained at a RF frequency of 40 GHz for 10 dBm LO power of 17.5 GHz. Conversion gain from the fabricated sub-harmonic mixer is one of the best reported thus far. And a phase noise of the 2nd harmonic was obtained -90.23 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset. The active sub-harmonic mixer also ensure a high degree of isolations, which are -35.8 dB from LO-to-IF and -40.5 dB from LO-to-RF, respectively, at a LO frequency of 17.5 GHz.

In this study, characteristics of swell-like high waves in the East Sea were analyzed using observed wave data and predicted meteorological data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). And, the wave prediction system using the data from the NOAA has been established. Furthermore, the applicability of the system has been verified by comparing the predicted results with the corresponding observed data. For some case, there were two times of wave height increase and the second increase occurred in a calm weather condition on the coast which might cause casualties. The direction of wave energy propagation was estimated from observed wave data in February, 2008. Through comparison between the direction of wave energy propagation and the meteorological data, it turns out that the second increase of waves is originated from the seas between Russia and Japan which is far from the East Sea.
