  • This paper presents the optimization for shape design of a field coil used High Temperature Superconducting Motor (HTSM). In materials of HTSM, critical current Ic is more sensitive to magnetic fields directed along the axis or the unit cell ($B_{\bot}$). Thus, in the shape design of the HTS magnet. the maximum $B_{\bot}$ should be reduced to limit Ic. In order to reduce the maximum $B_{\bot}$, the shape optimization of the magnet, which is used for the field coil of HTSM, is necessary. It can be accomplished by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Finally, the result of RSM is verified by comparison with these experimental results.

  • It is well known that $I_c$ (critical current) in HTS tape is more sensitive to $B{\perp}$ (magnetic field amplitude applied perpendicular to the tape surface) than to B// (magnetic field amplitude applied parallel to the tape surface). Thus, the magnitude of $B{\perp}$ at HTS tape is important to the design of HTS motor, because it determines the operating current. In addition, the $I_c$ of HTS field coil is determined by not only the $B{\perp}$ but also stress and strain condition at given operating temperature. Therefore, at the stage of field coil design, stress and strain conditions should be considered because when the HTS tape is handled, it is necessary to know the limiting values of loading, bending and twisting to avoid any damages. The $I_c$ of field coil is calculated by 3D analysis and measured through experiments considering the $B{\perp}$ and the margin of contacts loss.

  • HTS (High Temperature Superconducting) Power devices has the several useful characteristics from the technical and economical viewpoint. Possible application to the utility industry have been widely discussed in various research projects. For the successful introduction of HTS power devices into power system, establishing a proper R&D and marketing strategies through estimating the future market size are necessary. However, quantitative estimates of how well HTS power devices will serve their markets have been lacking. In this paper, we propose a estimation methodology of future market size for HTS power divices such as cable, transformer, generator, and motor, and also evaluate the future international and domestic market size by using proposed methodology.

  • On the contrary of a conventional motor with very narrow air-gap. it is difficult to calculate the accurate magnetic field distribution and the performance of an air-cored superconducting motor by 2 dimensional analysis. which does not use high permeability material except outer machine shield. This paper aims to do analysis of magnetic field and force distribution from the 3 dimensional modelling of a 1MW class superconducting synchronous motor. Especially. the field coil composed of Bi-2223 high-temperature superconductor and the outer machine shield are modelled by finite element analysis software according to their structures and the self-inductance and Lorentz force are calculated based on the 3 dimensional magnetic field calculation. Moreover. the influence of an important parameter, synchronous reactance, has been analyzed on the machine performances such as voltage variation and output power.

  • This paper deals with 3 Dimensional(3D) analysis of magnetic flux density of High Temperature Superconducting(HTS) motor using 3D Equivalent Magnetic Circuit Network (EMCN). When the Finite Element Method (FEM) is applied to an analysis of 3D models, it takes much time to the pre-process work required for 3D modeling and to solve the differential equation. Compare with 3D FEM, the result of 3D EMCN by using the magnetic resistance and magnetomotive force is exact and rapid. The accuracy of 3D EMCN is verified by comparing the 3D EMCN analysis with that of 3D FEM in HTS motor.

  • HTS tape is developed for the purpose of being applied to the power cable, motor and generator, etc. The resistance of conventional power cables is not changed a lot by over current condition. But HTS(High temperature superconductor)power cable has some different properties. The impedance of superconductor is changed due to the magnitude of current, temperature, and magnetic field. And the characteristics analysis of HTS power cable under many kind of fault conditions are important to apply real system. In addition the magnitude of over current is 10 times larger than rated current. In this paper, the characteristics of HTS power cable are analyzed when over current flows. Model cable used 2G wires was made and experimented. The results will be helpful to manufacture real HTS power cable.

  • This paper presents comparative research on characteristics of air-cored and iron-cored high-temperature superconductor (HTS) field winding synchronous motors. The 100 kW air-cored model is designed analytically by Spatial Harmonic Method, and based on this model, the iron-cored model having the same output power is designed for comparison. Due to the substantial difference of permeability property between air and iron-core, there is a difference of magnetic field magnitude and angle with respect to the HTS tape c-axis, resulting in a different critical current of the field winding considering the anisotropic property of HTS tape. For a detailed comparison between two models, the following key motor characteristics are calculated through the Finite Element Method (FEM) simulation: 1) critical current; 2) HTS wire length; and 3) torque characteristics. From the simulation results, it can be confirmed that the critical current value of the iron-cored model increases by 33 %. Also, in the case of the superconducting wire consumption, those of the iron-cored and air-cored models are 95.3 m and 815.6 m, respectively. So the wire usage can be reduced to about 88 % by using iron core. However, in terms of torque characteristics, the torque ripple of the iron-cored model is about twice as large as that of the air-cored model, which may be a disadvantage on vibration and acoustic noise.

  • This paper describes the development and fabrication of a high temperature superconducting motor which consists of HTS rotor and air-core stator. The machine was designed for the rated power of 100hp at 1800 rpm. The HTS field windings are composed of the double-pancake coils wound with AMSC's SUS-reinforced Bi-2223 tape conductor. These were assembled on the support structure and fixed by a bandage of glass-fiber composite. The cooling system is based on the heat transfer mechanism of the thermosyphon by using GM cryocooler as cooling source. The cold head is in contact with the condenser of a Ne-filled thermosyphon. The rotor assembly was tested independently at the stationary state and combined with stator. Characteristic parameters such as reactances, inductances, and time constants were determined to obtain a consistent overview of the machine operation properties. This motor has met all design parameters by demonstrating HTS field winding, cryogenic refrigeration systems and an air-core armature winding cooled with air. The HTS field winding could be cooled down below 30K. No-load test of open-circuit characteristics(OCC) and short-circuit characteristics(SCC) and load test with resistive load bank were conducted in generator mode. Maximum operating current of field winding at 30K was 120A. From OCC and SCC test results synchronous inductance and synchronous reactance were 2.4mH, 0.49pu, respectively. Efficiency of this HTS machine was 93.3% in full load(100hp) test. This paper will present design, construction, and basic experimental test results of the 100hp HTS machine.

  • High-temperature superconducting rotors offer advantages in terms of output-to-weight ratio and efficiency compared to conventional phase conduction motors or generators. The rotor can be cooled by conduction cooling, which attaches a cryocooler, and by refrigerant circulation, which uses circulating liquid or gas neon, helium and hydrogen. Recent work has focused on environmental issues and on high-temperature superconducting motors cooled with liquid hydrogen that can be combined with fuel cells. However, to ensure smooth supply and return of the cryogenic cooling fluid, a cryogenic rotational coupling between the rotating and stationary parts is necessary. Additionally, the development of a sealing structure to minimize fluid leakage applicable to the coupling is essential. This study describes the design and performance evaluation of a non-contact sealing method, specifically a labyrinth seal, which avoids power loss and heat load caused by friction in contact sealing structures. The seal design incorporates a spiral flow path to reduce leakage using centrifugal force, and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to analyze the flow path and rotational speed. A performance evaluation device was configured and employed to evaluate the designed seal. The results of this study will be used to develop a cryogenic rotational coupling with supply and return flow paths for cryogenic applications.
