  • In this study, we used coal based activated carbons as starting material and phenolic resin (PR) as a bonding agent to prepare spherical shaped activated carbons. The textural properties of SAC were characterized by BET surface area, XRD, SEM, iodine adsorption, strength intensity and pressure drop. According to the results, the spherical activated carbon prepared with activated carbon and PR at a ratio of 60:40 was found to have the best formation of spherical shape, which was found in sample SAC40. After activation, SAC40 has high BET surface area, iodine adsorption capability and strength value, and lowest pressure drop.

  • It was possible to grow the $Al_{2}O_{3}$ based $Y_{3}A_{5}O_{12}(YAG),ZrO_{2}$ binary and ternary eutectic fibers using micro-pulling down method with a growing rate of 0.1~15 mm/min. While $Al_{2}O_{3}/ZrO_{2}$ showed cellular-lamellar structure, $Al_{2}O_{3}$/YAG and $Al_{2}O_{3}$/YAG/$ZrO_{2}$ternary eutectic fibers showed homogeneous Chinese script lamellar structures. The microstructures of $Al_{2}O_{3}/ZrO_{2}$ binary eutectic fibers changed with solidification rate from lamellar pattern to cellular structure. The interlamellar spacing agreed with the inverse-square-root dependance on pulling rate according to $\lambda$=$kv_p\;{-1/2}$. $Al_{2}O_{3}/ZrO_{2}$ binary eutectic fibers recorded the highest tensile strength of about 1560MPa at room temperature. $Al_2O_3/YAG/ZrO_2$ternary eutectic fiber showed excellent thermal stability to $1200^{\circ}C$ without significant decrease. The maximum strength of ternary eutectic fibers recorded were 1100MPa at $25^{\circ}C$ and 970MPa at $1200^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • The objective of the present research is to develop the novel multi-compaction technology to produce hybrid structure in powder metallurgy (P/M) components using dissimilar Fe-based alloys. Two distinct powder alloys with different compositions were are used in this study: Fe-Cr-Mo-C pre-alloyed powder for high strength and Fe-Cu-C mixed powder for enhanced machinability and lower material cost. Initially, Fe-Cu-C was pre-compacted using a bar-shaped die with lower compaction pressure. The green compact of Fe-Cu-C alloy was inserted into a die residing a half of the die, and another half of the die was filled with the Fe-Cr-Mo-C powder. Then they subsequently underwent re-compaction with higher pressure. The final compact was sintered at 1120℃ for 60 min. In order to determine the mechanical behavior, transverse rupture strength (TRS) and Vickers hardness of sintered materials were measured and correlated with density variations. The microstructure was characterized using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope to investigate the interfacial characteristics between dissimilar P/M alloys.

  • With the increase in the demand for high-rise buildings, the use of high-strength steel has likewise increased. Thus, it has become more necessary to study the resistance force of the high-strength hollow structural section (HSS) joint of 600MPa. Additionally, the current design equation in Korea limits maximum yield stress at 360MPa in the case of HSS. In other words, since the current specification does not apply to HSS of 600MPa, this study aims to investigate the applicability of design equations as well as examine the behavior of the connection through the experiment and finite element analysis (FEA) of the plate-tube connection of 600MPa. In particular, this paper presents the behavior of joints with the gusset plates welded in the longitudinal direction of the circular hollow section (CHS) when the joints are subjected to lateral force. Comparing design equations with the results of FEA and the test, existing design equations are underestimated to be 56~79% in the case of high-strength materials.

  • Recently, nonlinear fracture mechanics was applied to analyze concrete structures more accurately, and new materials property such as fracture energy(Gf) was used for its application. The fracture energy was influenced by many parameters, especially the strength of concrete. Many researches on the relation between the strength of concrete and the fracture energy were performed. In spite of many researches on the relation between the strength of concrete and the fracture energy, there is no distinct conclusion. This research includes various the strength levels from low-strength of concrete to high-strength, and then intends to estimate relation between the strength of concrete and the fracture energy. Concrete used crushed sand is also included, which is going to be used much. In this research, the wedge splitting test method proposed by Prof. Linsbauer is adopted to investigate the fracture energy. Fracture behavior of concrete used natrual sand and crushed sand has the similar trend. In the strength range of 200~500 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the fracture energy and the maximum splitting forces(F) increase as the strength of concrete increases. In the range of the higher strength, however, the maximum splitting forces(F) increases but the fracture energy decreases as the strength of concrete increases. Through this investigation the fracture energy of concrete was not proportional to the strength of concrete.

  • Wood fibers for medium density fiberboard (MDF) was used in the filler layer of the white duplex board for increasing thickness and bulk of the board. The MDF fibers were treated with ozone (3% based on dry weight of the fibers), and mixed together with OCC (old corrugated container) to form paper. Ozone-treated MDF fibers gave high bulk, high tensile strength, high internal bond and fast drainage to the furnish mixed with OCC. It was shown that there were possibilities to reduced basis weight of the filler layer without loss of thickness, stiffness, and tensile strength. Furthermore, it showed the possibility to develop a new kind of board product that has high stiffness as well as high strength properties with light basis weight by application of the ozone-treated MDF fibers.

  • We have successfully fabricated high strengthening Cu/STS/Cu 3 layered clad metal of $70kgf/mm^2$ grade for electric device lead frame, and investigated thermal effect of the mechanical and physical properties on the Cu/STS/Cu 3 layered clad metal lead frame material at different temperatures ranging from RT to $200^{\circ}C$. The fabricated clad metal shows a good thermal stability under 6% degrading of mechanical tensile strength and hardness change at $200^{\circ}C$ and also physical properties show stable thermal and electrical conductance of over $220W/m{\cdot}K$ and 58.44% IACS upto the $200^{\circ}$. The results confirm that fabricated high strengthening Cu/STS/Cu 3 layered clad metal can be applied for the high performed electrical lead frame devices.

  • The fabrication process of micro pattern structure with high precision and high aspect ratio using powder injection molding (PIM) is developed. In the PIM process, the metal powder is mixed with the binder systems and the mixture is injected into the metal mold. The injection molded green parts are debinded and sintered to reach final shape and properties. In this method, the optimization of physical properties such as fluidity and strength of the binder system is essential for perfect filling the high aspect ratio micro-pattern. For this purpose, the correlation between the properties of the binder system and feedstock and ${\mu}-PIM$ process was investigated, and a binder system with low viscosity at low temperature(about $110^{\circ}C$) and high strength after cooling was investigated and applied. Employing this process, high precision parts with line type micro pattern structure which has pattern size $160{\mu}m$ and aspect ratio more than 2 can be manufactured.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a mortar mixture with high workability and adhesive strength for section jacketing in seismic strengthening technology of existing concrete structures. To achieve targeted requirements of the mortars (initial flow exceeding 200 mm, compressive strength of 30MPa, and adhesive strength exceeding 1MPa), step-by-step tests were conducted under the variation of the following mixture parameters: water-to-binder ratio, sand-to-binder ratio, polymer-to-binder ratio, dosage of viscosity agent, and content of ultra-rapid-hardening cement. The adhesive strength of the mortars was also estimated with respect to the various surface treatment states of existing concrete. Based on the test results, the mortar mixture with the polymer-to-binder ratio of 10% and the content of ultra-rapid-hardening cement of 5% can be recommended for the section jacketing materials. The recommended mortar mixture satisfied the targeted requirements as follows: initial flow of 220 mm, high-early strength gain, 28-day compressive strength of 35MPa, and adhesive strength exceeding 1.2MPa.

  • This study reports the interfacial bond strength between Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) and Normal Strength Concrete (NSC). While previous studies have focused on the interfacial strength between NSC substrate and UHPC overlay, this study use precast UHPC for enhanced constructability and replacement of formwork. The factors affecting the interface strength are comprehensively reviewed. It can be classified into: interface shape, degree of hardening and moisture condition of UHPC before combining with NSC, and curing condition of composite materials. Conducted experiments verify the effects of each factor on the interface strength and, accordingly show different failure modes. In particular, a new failure mode of the failure of a part of UHPC was firstly found in the case of sample with rough interface between UHPC and NSC. The other factors of the degree of hardening and the moisture and curing conditions of UHPC were discussed. This research will provide a valuable foundation to utilize the UHPC as a composite material.
