EFFECTS OF INTERFACE CRACKS EMANATING FROM A CIRCULAR HOLE ON STRESS INTENSITY FACTORS IN BONDED DISSIMILAR MATERIALS

  • Bonded dissimilar materials are being increasingly used in automobiles, aircraft, rolling stocks, electronic devices and engineering structures. Bonded dissimilar materials have several material advantages over homogeneous materials such as high strength, high reliability, light weight and vibration reduction. Due to their increased use it is necessary to understand how these materials behave under stress conditions. One important area is the analysis of the stress intensity factors for interface cracks emanating from circular holes in bonded dissimilar materials. In this study, the bonded scarf joint is selected for analysis using a model which has comprehensive mixed-mode components. The stress intensity factors were determined by using the boundary element method (BEM) on the interface cracks. Variations of scarf angles and crack lengths emanating from a centered circular hole and an edged semicircular hole in the Al/Epoxy bonded scarf joints of dissimilar materials are computed. From these results, the stress intensity factor calculations are verified. In addition, the relationship between scarf angle variation and the effect by crack length and holes are discussed.

FRACTURE STRENGTH OF COMPOSITE RESIN WITH VARIOUS FIBER REINFORCING MATERIALS (수종의 섬유보강재가 복합레진의 파절강도에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of fiber reinforcing materials on the fracture strength of composite resin was evaluated. Each ten composite resin bars reinforced by glassfiber[Fiber-Splint ML$^{(R)}$(Polydentia SA, Switzerland)], polyethylene fiber [Ribbond$^{(R)}$(Ribbond Inc., U.S.A.)] and polyaramid fiber[Kevlar$^{(R)}$(DuPont, U.S.A.)] were loaded under the 3-point compression technique. Another ten pure composite resin bars without reinforcement were used as a control group. Then mean fracture strength and standard deviation were calculated and a ANOVA and Scheffe test were used in statistics. The results were as follows: 1. Kevlar group showed the highest fracture strength as 175.5MPa (p<0.05). Fiber-Splint ML group showed the lowest fracture strength as 112.7MPa. 2. The mean value of fracture strength in Ribbond group was 136.4MPa, and that of unterated control group was 143.6MPa. No difference was found between the two groups. 3. Ribbond and Kevlar reinforcement groups showed a catastrophic failure, where complete separation of pieces occurs to a unseparated fracture pattern. The use of Kevlar reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant increase in the average load failure and the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation present in the unreinforced samples. The use of Ribbond reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed no significant increase in the average load failure. However, the presence of the fibers did prevent the catastrophic crack propagation. Because high strength of glassfiber are rapidly degraded on exposure to moisture and humidity. The use of Fiber-Splint ML reinforcement fibers with composite resin showed significant decrease in the average load failure and displayed catastrophic fractures.

Effects of ZrO2 Addition on Mechanical Strength and Thermal Shock Resistance of Cordierite-Mullite Ceramics (ZrO2가 코디어라이트-뮬라이트 세라믹스의 기계적 강도 및 내열충격성에 미치는 영향)

  • Cordierite composed of an alumina-silica-magnesia compound has a low coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) and excellent thermal shock resistance. It also has a low dielectric constant and high electrical insulation. However, due to low mechanical strength, it is limited for use in a ceramic heater. In this study, $ZrO_2$ is added to an 80 wt% cordierite-20 wt% mullite composition, and the effect of $ZrO_2$ addition on the mechanical strength and thermal shock resistance is investigated. With an increasing addition of $ZrO_2$, cordierite-mullite formed $ZrO_2$, $ZrSiO_4$ and spinel phases. With sintering conducted at $1400^{\circ}C$ with the addition of 5 wt% $ZrO_2$ to 80 wt% cordierite-20 wt% mullite, the most dense microstructure forms along with an excellent mechanical strength with a 3-point flexural strength of 238MPa. When this composition is quenched in water at ${\Delta}T=400^{\circ}C$, the 3-point flexural strength is maintained. Moreover, when this composition is cooled from $800^{\circ}C$ to air, the 3-point flexural strength is maintained even after 100 cycles. In addition, the CTE is measured as $3.00{\times}10^{-6}{\cdot}K^{-1}$ at $1000^{\circ}C$. Therefore, 80 wt% cordierite-20 wt% mullite with 5 wt% $ZrO_2$ is considered to be appropriate as material for a ceramic heater.

Evaluation on In-Site Compressive Strength of High-Strength Concrete Mass Elements under Cold Weather (혹한기 고강도 콘크리트 매스부재의 현장 압축강도 평가)

  • This study evaluated the in-site compressive strength development of high-strength concrete developed for the mass structures under cold weather condition. Two mock-up wall specimens with $2.0{\times}1.2{\times}1.0m$ in dimension were cured under an average temperature of $5^{\circ}C$. Core strengths measured at different locations of the mock-up walls were compared with the companion standard cylinder strengths. Test results revealed that the core strength of mock-up walls at an age of 3 days is higher by approximately 30% than the companion cylinder strength because of the high curing temperature effect generated from the heat of hydration of cementitious materials. Furthermore, comparisons with the prediction models based on maturity function confirmed that the effect of hydration heat on the curing temperature increase needs to be reflected to reasonably evaluate the on-site compressive strength development of concrete for mass elements.

An Investigation on the Quality of High-Strength Shotcrete and the Long Term Durability using Combined Deterioration Test (고강도 숏크리트의 품질평가와 복합열화시험을 통한 장기내구성 검토)

  • In this study, Field test was performed using high-quality additions and accelerators to obtain the improvement of the strength on domestic shotcrete and quality test based on EFNARC was performed. In addition, Deterioration test that combined the Freezing-thawing and Carbonation was also performed in order to investigate a long-term durability of high-strength shotcrete. As a result of field test, a promotion ratio of early strength is $90\sim97%$ in case of using alkali-free accelerators. And a compressive strength of shotcrete using Micro-silica fume was $45.2\sim55.8MPa$ and the flexible strength was $5.01\sim6.66MPa$, so a promotion ratio of strength was $37\sim79%$, $17\sim61%$ respectively. It was showed that increment effect of strength by the Micro-silica fume replacement of $7.5\sim10%$ for cement mass was remarkable. It was also realized that application of Micro-silica fume to shotcrete reduced deterioration and improved a long-term durability of shotcrete.

AE Characteristics for Fracture Mechanism of Al 7075/CFRP Hybrid Composite (Al 7075/CFRP Hybrid 복합재료의 파손특성에 대한 AE 특성 연구)

  • When compared to other composite materials such as FRP and MMC, hybrid composite material is more attractive one due to the high specific strength and the resistance to fatigue. However, the fracture mechanism of hybrid composite material is extremely complicated because of the bonding structure of metals and FRP. Recently, nondestructive technique has been used to evaluate the fracture mechanism of these composite materials. In this study, AE technique has been used to clarify the fracture mechanism and the degree of damage for Al 7075/CFRP hybrid composite material. It was found that AE event, energy and amplitude among AE parameters were effective to evaluate fracture process of Al 7075/CFRP composite material. In addition, the relationship between the AE signal and the characteristics of failure surface using optical microscope was discussed.

  • Metal matrix composites (MMCs), which are a combination of two or more constituents with different physical or chemical properties, are today receiving great attention in various areas, as they have high specific strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue strength, and good tribological properties. This paper presents a research review on the combination of matrix and reinforced materials, fabrication processes, and application status of metal matrix composites. In this paper, we aim to discuss and review the importance of metal composite materials as advanced materials that can be used in various applications such as transportation, defense, sports, and extreme environments. In addition, the applicability and technology development trends in new process technology fields such as additive manufacturing of metal composites will be described.

  • The effects of heat input(1.5~3.6kJ/mm) and postweld heat treatment(PWHT, $600^{\circ}C$, 40hr.) on the TMCP HSB600 steel weldments made by GMAW process were investigated. The tensile strength and CVN impact energy of as-welded specimens decreased with increasing heat input. The fine-grained acicular ferrite was mainly formed in the low heat input while polygonal and side plate ferrites were dominated in the high inputs. Meanwhile, tensile strength and hardness of PWHT weldments decreased due to the coarsening of microstructure and reduction of residual stresses.

Fracture Behavior of Silicon Nitride-silicon Carbide-boron Nitride Multi-layer Composites with Different Layer Thickness

  • Multi-layer composites consisting of silicon nitride, silicon nitride-silicon carbide and boron nitride-alumina layers were prepared fly stacking the corresponding ceramic tapes. The composites demonstrated self-diagnostic capability and non-catastrophic failure behavior. The composites consisting of many thin layers exhibited high strength and stepwise increase of the electrical resistance during the flexure test. The strength of the composite with too thick silicon nitride layers was low and the electrical resistance was abruptly increased to the detection limit of the digital multi-meter during the test. An extensive crack branching was observed in the weak (BN + Al$_2$O$_3$)layer.

Effect of Changing of Filling Materials in NR-SBR Type Elastomer Based Rubber Materials on Mechanical Properties (필러재료의 변화에 따른 NR-SBR 타입 엘라스토머 기반 고무재료의 기계적물성)

  • The effects of different filling materials and stabilizers in polymer based materials that are used as shoe soles in the shoemaking industry on the mechanical properties (strength, failure, tensile, tearing, bending etc.) of the final products have been examined in this study. Natural rubber (NR RSS3) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR 1502) were used as the main matrix material. New compounds were formed by replacing the fillings in the general compound of the existing factory ($SiO_2$, $CaCO_3$) with 40% (1200 g) blast furnace flue dust, rice husk, reclaimed rubber (recycled) and wood ash. Comparison of the new compounds with the existing compounds revealed a decrease in hardness, density, dimension stability, bending, tearing, % elongation and failure strength and an increase in wearing.
