An Overview of The Commercialisation of The Spray Forming Process

  • (i) The development of a metallurgical bond during the spray forming of clad products has offered the possibility of manufacturing large rolls, including those used in hot and cold strip mills. Small rolls are already being produced in Japan. (ii) Technical developments, including the use-of-multi-atomizers have resulted in the elimination of porosity from the internal bore of a sprayed tube. Bimetallic tubing can also be manufactured and the installation of a 4.5 ton tube plant in the USA should provide low operation costs. (iii) Spray forming offers a potentially low cost manufacturing route for superalloy ring/casing components in high strength superalloys. (iv) A large pilot plant has been built for the spray forming of ultra-clean superalloys for turbine disc applications. (v) Using twin-atomizing technology, special steel billets have been spray formed up to 400mm diameter with deposition yields in excess of 90%. (vi) Al/Si alloy extrusion billets with excellent dimensional tolerances are being manufactured for large scale automotive applications. Several new aluminum alloys have also been developed, including high strength, low density and low cocfficient of expansion materials. (vii) New copper alloys have been developed and pilot plants are in operation to produce these alloys once markets have become established.

A Study on Evaluation of Crack Opening Point in High Strength Aluminum Alloy(I) (고강도 알미늄 합금재에 있어서 크랙열림점 평가에 관한 연구(I))

  • This paper aims to synthesize the research on fatigue fracture mechanisms of high strength aluminum alloys which are widely used in motorcars or airplanes to prevent accidents. To measure the data of crack opening ratio, the same materials and method are used for evaluating the fatigue crack propagation rate as an effective stress intensity factor. But, many researchers have brought different results. An exact crack opening ratio was, therefore, proposed for getting a more accurate fatigue crack propagation rate. The main conclusions obtained are as follows. (1) As a result of the fatigue test, the value of the crack opening ratio is the same regardless of the stress ratio. (2) The value of crack opening ratio is different according to the measuring point. After measuring the crack propagation rate by using an effective stress intensity factor, the crack opening ratio value measured at the crack mouth by a clip gage, or measured rear of the specimen by a strain gage is more accurate than that by any other measuring test.

The Mechanical and Tribological Properties of Silicon Carbide Bodies (탄화규소 소결체의 기계적 특성 및 마찰마모)

  • The aim of this work is to show the way of manufacturing the SiC mechanical seal at the low temperature of 130$0^{\circ}C$ using clay and frit as source of secondary phase. $\alpha$-SiC and $\beta$-SiC powder which showed different distribution of particle were used as starting materials, i.e. average particle size of $\alpha$-SiC was larger than that of $\beta$-SiC. The mechanical and tribological properties of two groups of specimen, i.e. one contained mainly larger $\alpha$-SiC powder and the other mainly fine particle $\beta$-SiC, were measured. The specimen consisted of larger $\alpha$-SiC exhibited lower density flexural strength and wear resistance is comparison with these of sample containning mainly $\beta$-SiC . This difference could be originated from the dependence of capillary force on the particle size. For the larger SiC particle, the liquid phase may not fill the whole pores during sintering, due to low capillary force, whereas the liquid phase can infiltrate into the small ores surrounded small $\beta$-SiC particle. Thus, the course of high flexural strength and high wear resistance of specimen prepared using small particles can be explaced from the easy infiltration of liquid phase.

  • The resistive type high temperature superconducting fault current limiter (HTSFCL) limits the fault current using the resistance generated by fault current. The generated resistance by fault current makes large pulse power which makes the operation of HTSFCL unstable. So, the cryogenic cooling system of the resistive type HTSFCL must diffuse and eliminate the pulse energy very quickly. Although the best way is to make wide direct contact area between HTS winding and coolant as much as possible, HTS winding also needs the impregnation layer which fixes and protects it from electromagnetic force. This paper deals with the thermal conductivity and dielectric strength of some epoxy compounds for the impregnation of high temperature superconducting (HTS) winding in liquid nitrogen. The measured data can be used in the optimal design of impregnation for HTS winding. Aluminar filling increased the thermal conductivity of epoxy compounds. Hardener also affected the thermal and electric characteristic of epoxy compounds.

Study on the Long Time Breakdown Voltage in the Macro Interface between Epoxy and Rubber (에폭시/고무 거시계면에서 장시간 절연파괴전압에 대한 연구)

  • In this paper, the estimation of lifetime with the various conditions of the interface between toughened epoxy and rubber which are consisting materials of underground power delivery system has been studied. After the measurement of the short time AC interfacial breakdown strength on macro interfaces at room temperature, the breakdown time at several voltages were measured under the constant voltages lower than the short time breakdown voltage. The long time breakdown voltage was calculated by using Inverse Power Law. Two types of interfaces was studied. One was the interface between toughened epoxy and EPDM(Ethylene Prorylene Diene Terpolymer). The other was the interface between toughened epoxy and silicon rubber. Interfacial pressure and roughness of interfaces was determined through the characteristic of short time AC interfacial breakdown strength. Oil condition was no oiled, low viscosity oiled and high viscosity oiled. High viscosity oiled interface between Toughened epoxy and silicon rubber had the best lifetime exponent, 20.69. and the breakdown voltage of this interface after 30 years was evaluated 19.27㎸.

THE QUALITY PROPERTIES FOR FLY ASH OF COMBINED HEAT POWER PLAINT AND MECHANANICAL PROPERTIES IN CONCRETE (열병합발전소 플라이애쉬 품질 및 콘크리트의 역학적 특성)

  • The primary purpose of this study is to investigate reusal techniques of fly ash of combined heat power plant in the construction field, which may contribute to the saving of construction materials and conservating environment. Firstly chemical and physical characteristics of fly ash is analysed. And then, the usability of the concrete is tested by investigating the flowablility and stength development through parameters of various replacement ratios with respect to different mixing conditions. Finally, the durability and mechanical properties(elastic modulus) of the concrete is tested. As the result of the study, the following conclusions are derived : (1) the quantity of the CaO in the fly ash is relatively high based on the chemical analysis, (2)the compressive strength ratio of the mortar is satisfied with the specification, but the unit water ratio increased, (3)high strength concrete of more than 400kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ can be developed in the ranges of FA 30%, W/B 40%, (5)the slump loss with the elapsed time due to the delivery is decreased as the replacement ratio of the fly ash is increased, (6)the modulus of the elasticity is matched withn the specification of the Architectural Institute of Korea.

  • This paper is a study about application of recently proposed Performance Based Mixture Design (PBMD) for design of high strength concrete (HSC) to obtain HSC mix proportion that satisfies required performances. Based on extensive experimental results obtained for various material and performance parameters of HSC, the application feasibility of the developed PBMD procedure for HSC has been verified. Also, the proposed PBMD procedure has been used to perform application examples to obtain desired target performances of HSC with optimum concrete mixture proportions using locally available materials, local environmental conditions, and available concrete production technologies.

  • So far, there has been no study of the concrete to strengthen in the lining of the tunnels, except for the study of the stability of subgrade and the tunnel construction technologies. In the existing concrete work for tunnel lining, lots of problems happen due to the partial compaction and the material segregation after casting concrete. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to improve economic efficiency and secure durability through the improvement of the construction performance and quality of the concrete for the tunnel lining among the civil structures. Therefore, the compactability and strength properties of the High Flowing Self-Compacting Lining Concrete (HSLC) are evaluated to develop the mixing proportion for design construction technology of HSLC that can overcome the inner cavity due to the reduced flowability and unfilled packing, which has been reported as the problem in the existing lining concrete. The result of the evaluation shows that the ternary mix meets the regulations better than the binary mix. Consequently, it has been judged applicable to the cement for tunnel lining.

  • Rheo-diecasting with stirring has been used in many material industries. As the 4th Industrial Revolution approaches the world, eco-friendly high-strength and light-weight materials become more important. Casting methods have been studied and used for aluminum-alloy automobile parts. This study carried out the effect analysis of the micro-structure and mechanical properties, such as yield/ultimate tensile strength, elongation, and hardness, of A356 using the 6-pole EMS (electro-magnetic stirring) casting process with a high electromagnetic force. As a result, the hardness and elongation of the A356 after T6 heat-treatment show a significant improvement, respectively, by 20% and 50%.

  • Micro-alloyed steel or heat-treatment-free used in clean technology have been replacing for conventional quenched-and-tempered structural steels since the micro-alloyed forging steel was developed in early 1970s in Germany for saving money of heat treatment, simplified process, short delivery and good productivity. In this paper, ball stud assembled in steering system for automobile was selected to compare conventional process making heat treatment with new process using high strength micro-alloyed steel without heat treatment. The conventional process for ball stud was composed of a total of 6 steps including upsetting, forward extrusion, machining, burnishing and tread rolling with heat treatment and shot blasting. As opposed to conventional process, newly proposed process for ball stud using the clean technology without heat treatment is simplified such as forward extrusion, heading, upsetting, forming having a flange shape and tread rolling. Also net shape forming process to achieve specified process not to include machined step fur manufacturing the ball stud was applied to newly simplified process since micro-alloyed steel is difficult to be formed.
