  • A compression lap splice becomes an important issue due to development of ultra-high strength concrete. Current design codes regarding compression lap splice do not utilize merits of the improved strength of ultra-high strength concrete. Especially, a compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice according to the codes because they do not consider effects of compressive strength of concrete and transverse reinforcement. This anomaly confuses engineers in practice. Design equation is proposed for compression lap splice in 40 to 70 MPa of compressive strength of concrete. The proposed equation is based on 51 specimens conducted by authors. Basic form of the equation includes main parameters which are derived from investigating test results. Through two-variable non-linear regression analysis of measured splice strengths, a strength equation of compression lap splices is then derived. A specified splice strength is defined using a 5% fractile coefficient and a lap length equation is constructed. By the proposed equation, the anomaly of lap lengths in tension and compression is got rid of. In addition, the equation has a reliability equivalent to those of the specified strengths of materials.

  • The light Mg alloys bearing the remarkably high strength, corrosion resistance and elevated temperature stability stand on the center of interest. The accomplishment so far is, however, only by alloy modification without any consideration on the rapid solidification effect. This work is to report not only the effect of rapid solidification of $MgZn_{4.3}Y_{0.7}$ alloy powders, but the extrusion behavior on the materials properties. The average grain size of the atomized powders was about $3-4{\mu}m$. The extrusion was carried out with the area reduction ratio of 10:1 to 15:1. As the ratio increased, homogeneous microstructure was obtained, and the mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation were simultaneously increased.

  • There is a growing interest to replace the commercial steels with non-heat treated steels, which does not involve the spheroidization and quenching-tempering treatment in the steel-wire industry production. However, non-heat treated steels should satisfy high strength and good formability without performing heat treatment. Therefore, it is important to investigate optimum materials showing a good combination of strength and formability after the cold drawing process. In this presentation, non-heat treated steel wire rod produced by POSCO will be introduced and discussed on detail technical concepts.

  • Sialon ceramics are presently seen as promising materials with high hardness, strength, fracture toughness and corrosion resistance for friction and wear applications. The objective of present work is to improve of mechanical properties and wear resistance of $\alpha$-Sialon(x=0.4) by addition of SiC whisker. $\alpha$-sialon(x=0.4)/SiC whisker composites were obtained by hot-isostatic pressing at 173$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour under 1757Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ N2 pressure after pressureless sintering the mixture of Si3N4, Y2O3, AlN at 1780~180$0^{\circ}C$ for 3~5 hours in N2 atmosphere. As the amount of SiC whisker content increased, relative density and hardness were decreased, however fracture toughness, bending strength and tribological properties were improved. Tribological properties of $\alpha$-Sialon/15 vol% SiC whisker composite were improved in spite of its low mechanical properties.

  • MCPs means Micro Cellular Plastics. The micro-cells are generated in the products by the difference of dissolution through the pressure drop after super critical fluid of CO2 or N2 dissolves into polymer. We have developed injection molding process adopting MCPs and applied it to a broad range of injection molded thermoplastic materials and applications. It can prevent the leakage of impact strength and increase the thermal conductivity, moreover regulate the thermal conductivity. Then we can develop the high strength foaming plastics. Also, it can be gained a competitive advantage by utilizing its processing benefits, e.g. the lightweight products and significant reductions in material consumption.

  • The remaining life estimation for the aged components in power plants as well as chemical plants are very important because mechanical properties of the components are degraded with in-service exposure time in high temperatures. Since it is difficult to take specimens from the operating components to evaluate mechanical properties of components, nondestructive techniques are needed to evaluate the degradation. In this study, test materials with several different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at $630^{\circ}C$. The DC potential drop method and destructive methods such as tensile and fracture toughness were used in order to evaluate the degradation of 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steels. In this result, we can see that tensile strength and fracture toughness can be calculated from resistivity and it is possible to evaluate material degradation using DC potential drop method, non-destructive method.

  • Rotary bending fatigue tests were carried out to investigate the improvement of fatigue limit in annealed and austempered spheroidal graphite cast iron. Main results obtained are as follows. (1) The tensile strength(hardness) of Series C is higher than that of Series B, and fatigue limits are 245MPa in Series C, 230MPa in Series B and 195MPa in Series A, respectively. (2) The fatigue limits of Series B and Series A are mainly governed by the resistance to fatigue crack initiation. Whereas, the fatigue limit of Series C is governed by the resistance to fatigue crack initiation and growth. The defect size and the resistance to crack initiation and growth should be considered to clarify the fatigue properties in spheroidal graphite cast iron. (3) Improvement of fatigue limit by half-austempering is more reasonable than that of full-austempering treatment in multi defective materials as spheroidal graphite cast iron.

  • Quartz glass are used in semiconductor industries as the reaction furnace, wafer carrier and accessaries. During the process the quartz glass received compression by direct contact with other quartz glass ware and metal as the form of weight itself and vacuum pressure and fatigue by vibrations caused by process. Even as the other ceramic materials quartz glass have high compressive strength but often there happened crack and breakage of quartz glass resulted in a great damage in the process. In this paper investigation will be carried out on fracture behavior of quartz glass under local load to give guideline to prevent unintended fracture of quartz glass.

  • One of the recent changes in machining technology is rapid application of micro- and high precision grinding processes. A fine groove generation is necessary for the fabrication of optics, electronics and semiconductor parts. Slot grinding is very efficient for the generation of micro ordered groove with hard and brittle materials. In the process of slot grinding, chipping at the sharp edges and microcracks of the ground grooves are inevitable defects. Chipping should be reduced for the improvement of surface integrity. Mechanical contact with diamond grits causes microcracks at the grooves. This damage resides subsurface, and can be the cause of failure of the punch die. This paper deals with chipping generation at the sharp edges, surface integrity of side groove and fracture strength is related to the microcracks in the slot grinding.

  • Recently, attempts have been made to be join ceramics to metals in order to make up for the brittleness of ceramics. The difference in the coefficients of linear expansion of the two materials joined at high temperature will cause residual stress, which has a strong influence on the strength of the bonded joints. In this paper, the residual stress distribution and stress intensity factors of the ceramic/metal bonded joints were analyzed by 2-dimensional elastic boundary element method. Fracture toughness tests of ceramic/metal bonded joints with an interface crack were carried out. So the advanced method of quantitative strength evaluation for ceramic/metal bonded joints is to be suggested. Fracture surface and crack propagation path were observed using scanning electron microscope.
