  • Using composite materials for lilting train system has many advantages such as manufacturing variety, specific high-strength & stiffness characteristics, and long-life durability, but the strongest advantage could be the possibility of lightweight product. In the leading countries, the composite materials are used for the material fer drivers' cabs, interior/exterior equipments for railway train, and it is now developing the composite materials applied for the train car body structure. In this paper, we examine the use of composite materials for the drivers' cabs and interior/exterior equipments for the developing tilting train in Korea, and review the car body design using composite materials.

  • Graphene has attracted the interest of many researchers due to various its advantages such as high mobility, high transparency, and strong mechanical strength. However, large-area graphene is grown at high temperatures of about 1,000 ℃ and must be transferred to various substrates for various applications. As a result, transferred graphene shows many defects such as wrinkles/ripples and cracks that happen during the transfer process. In this study, we address transfer-free, large-scale, and high-quality monolayer graphene. Monolayer graphene was grown at low temperatures on Ti (10nm)-buffered Si (001) and PET substrates via plasma-assisted thermal chemical vapor deposition (PATCVD). The graphene area is small at low mTorr range of operating pressure, while 4 × 4 ㎠ scale graphene is grown at high working pressures from 1.5 to 1.8 Torr. Four-inch wafer scale graphene growth is achieved at growth conditions of 1.8 Torr working pressure and 150 ℃ growth temperature. The monolayer graphene that is grown directly on the Ti-buffer layer reveals a transparency of 97.4 % at a wavelength of 550 nm, a carrier mobility of about 7,000 ㎠/V×s, and a sheet resistance of 98 W/□. Transfer-free, large-scale, high-quality monolayer graphene can be applied to flexible and stretchable electronic devices.

  • Carbon material shows relatively high strength at high temperature in vacuum atmosphere and can be easily removed as CO or $CO_2$ gas in oxidation atmosphere. Using these characteristics, we have investigated the applicability of carbon mold for precision casting of high melting point metal such as nickel. Disc shape carbon mold with cylindrical pores was prepared and Ni-base super alloy (CM247LC) was used as casting material. The effects of electroless Nickel plating on wettability and cast parameters such as temperature and pressure on castability were investigated. Furthermore, the proper condition for removal of carbon mold by evaporation in oxidation atmosphere was also examined. The SEM observation of the interface between carbon mold and casting materials (CM247LC), which was infiltrated at temperature up to $1600^{\circ}C$, revealed that there was no particular product at the interface. Carbon mold was effectively eliminated by exposure in oxygen rich atmosphere at $705^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and oxidation of casting materials was restrained during raising and lowering the temperature by using inert gas. It means that the carbon can be applicable to precision casting as mold material.

  • Recently, high growth potential of barrier materials industry including high performance packing materials was expected with increasing the national income and well-being culture. As high barrier materials, polymer nanocomposites have considerable attractions due to their excellent physical properties compared to conventional composite materials. In general, polymer nanocomposites were consisted of polymer matrix and inorganic fillers, such as layered silicate, carbon nanotubes, and metal- or inorganic nanoparticles. Among these materials, layered silicate which was called as the clay was usually used as nano-fillers because of naturally abundant and most economical and structural properties. Clay-reinforced polymer nanocomposites have various advantages, such as high strength, flammability, gas barrier property, abrasion resistance, and low shrinkage and used for automotive and packing materials. Therefore, in this paper, we focused on the need of gas barrier materials and materials-related technologies.

  • The PHC pile has been increasingly used due to its implementation of the top-base method, which is advantageous in high penetration rate and bearing capacity reinforcement. Typically, when a PHC pile is manufactured, high-strength mixed materials are mainly used to enhance the compressive strength. However, recent studies have been conducted to utilize ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) in terms of economic efficiency. For this reason, this study manufactured PHC pile considering the replacement ratio and curing conditions of GGBS instead of high-strength mixed materials, and further investigated the engineering properties of the PHC pile. According to the experimental results, the compressive strength of GGBS-replaced PHC pile increased by steam curing, and particularly, PHC pile with 20% replacement of GGBS under $80^{\circ}C$ steam curing condition showed a compressive strength of approximately 84MPa. Furthermore, the experimental results confirmed that more hydration products were generated under the $80^{\circ}C$ steam curing condition than that under the $20^{\circ}C$ steam curing condition, which would affect the higher density of the PHC pile as well as the increase in the compressive strength.

  • Engineering properties of most polymers used in geosynthetics such as geogrid can be degraded by the chemical reaction (e.g., oxidization, ultraviolet rays, hydrolysis etc.), chemical and mechanical load, microorganism, and so on. In addition, polymer can be damaged by the compaction during construction, and the characteristic of tensile strength of polymer can be changed by the long-term creep effect. In this study, engineering properties of flexible geogrids which are manufactured by weaving/knitting the high-tenacity polymers such as polyester formed in a very open, grid-like configuration, coated with any one of a number of materials (e.g., PVC, latex, etc.), are investigated. Through the analysis of test results, the durability and the long-term design tensile strength of flexible geogrids are evaluated.

  • Epoxy/mica composite was synthesized, in order to use it as an impregnation resin in a vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) process, for manufacturing a high voltage rotary machine. The average particle size of the mica was 5~7 ${\mu}m$ and its content was 0, 20, 30 and 40 wt%. A plasticizer or a low molecular aliphatic epoxy was also used, to decrease the viscosity of the composite. The AC electrical breakdown strength was estimated in sphere-to-sphere electrodes, and the electrical breakdown data were estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The electrical breakdown strength became higher with the addition of mica; and that of the system with 20 wt% mica was highest. The electrical breakdown strength of the system with an aliphatic epoxy was higher than that of the system with a, plasticizer.

  • In the following paper, a socio-political heuristic search approach, named the imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) has been used to improve the efficiency of the multi-layer perceptron artificial neural network (ANN) for predicting the compressive strength of concrete. 173 concrete samples have been investigated. For this purpose the values of slump flow, the weight of aggregate and cement, the maximum size of aggregate and the water-cement ratio have been used as the inputs. The compressive strength of concrete has been used as the output in the hybrid ICA-ANN model. Results have been compared with the multiple-linear regression model (MLR), the genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The results indicate the superiority and high accuracy of the hybrid ICA-ANN model in predicting the compressive strength of concrete when compared to the other methods.

  • This investigation was undertaken to establish the technologies of grain refinement and modification, and to characterize material properties, essential for high quality aluminum alloy castings. Grain refinement seldom changed DAS and eutectic Si size, but largely decrease grain size. The variations of grain size induced by grain refinement had a great influence on the elongation without changes in the tensile strength or yield strength. The optimum Ti level lies between 0.1% and 0.16% to achieve the best possible mechanical properties. DAS and grain size were little affected, but eutectic Si size was greatly refined by modification. The variation of eutectic Si size had a great effect on the elongation, impact value, fracture toughness and fatigue crack propagation rate without changes in the tensile strength or yield strength. The Sr content of 0.015% is optimum to modification.
