  • A series of wind tunnel test were conducted on Korean high speed train model to understand the flow physics around the vehicle related to the aerodynamic drag. For the wind tunnel test on high-speed ground vehicle, a moving ground simulation is necessary to predict the aerodynamic drag accurately. So, the models were tested in three wind tunnels with various ground simulation facility including moving belt ground plane system and tangential blowing system. The test results including measured aerodynamic drag and flow visualization showed that a tangential blowing method can be an alternative ground simulation method in short time using conventional wind tunnel.

  • The inside configuration of intake nozzle of vacuum cleaner greatly affects the dust-collection efficiency and acoustic-noise effect generated from flow separation Interaction between high-speed flow and internal structure. In order to improve the performance of the vacuum cleaner, flow fields inside the intake nozzles were investigated using flow visualization and FIV (Particle Image Vetocimetry) technique. The measurement to aerodynamic power, suction efficiency and noise level were also carried out. Valuable information was obtained from the experiments, revealing how to modify the intake nozzle. In this paper, the results of visualization, velocity distribution of flow fields, aerodynamic power, suction efficiency and noise level are discussed.

  • The flow induced by a vertically impinging circular jet under a horizontal plate is investigated by visualization technique, using kerosene smoke in nitrogen gas to visualize the vortex flow and impinging flow. The light source was the sheet beam of Ar-Ion laser. The vertical and horizontal images scattering of kerosene smoke were recorded by the high speed CCD camera and the video camera. The instantaneous velocity of the vortex and the mean velocity of the smoke front were measured from the acquisited images.

  • Effect of visualization as a tool for the education of fluid dynamics is mainly discussed. Visualized images are much more understandable compared to the explanation using equations and texts. Several examples are presented to clarify this statement. Then, the software system for teaching fluid dynamics using the results by the numerical simulation is discussed. Two important issues on what is needed in the system are given. First, such systems should be capable of animating images. Second, such systems should be interactively used by students. Changing parameters, coefficients, equations, etc. themselves and watching the difference are important for them to understand the nature of physics underlying the equations. The teaching system with visualization is no doubt a good tool for introducing fluid dynamics.

  • In multiphase systems, surface wettability is one of dominant design parameters to enhance system performance. Since surface wettability can be maximized and minimized with micro-textured surfaces, therefore micro-textured surfaces are widely countered in various research and engineering fields. In this study, for better understanding of micrometer scaled surface wettability, spreading phenomena is experimentally investigated on the hydrophilic micro-textured surfaces. By photolithography and conventional dry etching method, there are prepared the surfaces with uniformly arrayed micro-pillars. The interfacial motions of a water droplet on the test sections are visualized by high speed camera in top view. On the basis of visualization data, it is analyzed the relation between dynamic coefficient and geometrical features on micro-textured surfaces.

  • Passenger safety is one of the most important considerations in the purchase of an automobile. A curtain-type air bag is increasingly adapted in deluxe cars for protecting passengers from the danger of side clash. Inflator housing is a main part of the curtain-type air bag system for supplying high-pressure gases to pump up the air bag-curtain. Although the inflator housing is fundamental in designing a curtain-type air bag system, flow information on the inflator housing is very limited. In this study, we measured instantaneous velocity fields of a high-speed flow ejecting from the inflator housing using a dynamic PIV system. From the velocity field data measured at a high frame-rate, we evaluated the variation of the mass flow rate with time. From the instantaneous velocity fields of flow ejecting from the airbag inflator housing in the initial stage, we can see a flow pattern of broken shock wave front and its downward propagation. The flow ejecting from the inflator housing was found to have large velocity fluctuations and the maximum velocity was about 700m/s. The velocity of high-speed flow was decreased rapidly and the duration of high-speed flow over 400m/s was maintained only to 30ms. After 100ms, there was no perceptible flow.

  • Intravascular optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables imaging of the three-dimensional (3D) microstructure of a blood vessel wall. While 3D vascular visualization provides detailed information of the vessel wall and intraluminal structures, a longitudinal imaging pitch that is several times bigger than the imaging resolution of the system has limited true high-resolution 3D imaging. In this paper we demonstrate high-speed intravascular OCT in vivo, acquiring images at a rate of 350 frames per second. A 47-mm-long rabbit aorta was imaged in 3.7 seconds, after a short flush with contrast agent. The longitudinal imaging pitch was 34 micrometers, comparable to the transverse imaging resolution of the system. Three-dimensional volume rendering showed greatly enhanced visualization of tissue microstructure and stent struts, relative to what is provided by conventional intravascular imaging speeds.
