  • Through the data transfer race in industry since 1990s, the operational speed of optical disk drive(ODD) becomes commonly over 10,000 rpm. Such high speed operation inevitably causes the vibration, which is also the disturbances in the read-write process of pick-up servo-controller. Generally the vibration disturbance problem can be solved by the vibration isolation using the rubber mount and the increase of robustness of the pick-up servo-controller. Optical disk itself has not been targeted for the vibration reduction, because it is manufactured under the standardized format. In this paper we focused on the increase of critical speed of optical disk, that is, the improvement of dynamic characteristics, with the control of residual stresses which are come from the injection molding process. To do this, first, the residual stresses induced from the injection molding process are calculated using finite element method. The major design parameters of the process conditions are flow rate and melt temperature, which control the residual stresses in optical disk. Second, the critical speed of optical disk is calculated with modal analysis considering residual stress distributions. It was found out that the critical speed can be improved by the control of operational parameters in the injection molding process.

  • Controlled transfer (CT) service has been recently proposed as a new ATM transfer capability for high-speed data applications, which used a credit-based flow control. This paper investigates buffer allocation schemes for CT service and proposes an improved dynamic bugger allocation scheme. In order to improve the responsiveness to a congestion, the proposed method is considered the load factor of a link when determining the amounts of virtual connection (VC)s buffer allocation. Also, in this paper we compare the performance of the proposed method with those of the existing buffer allocation methods such as flow controlled virtual channels (FCVC) and zero queueing flow control (ZQFC) through simulation. Simulation results show tat the proposed scheme exhibits a better performance than the existing schemes in terms of throughput, fairness, queue length and link utilization.

  • An impeller is a type of high-speed rotor that is used to compress or transfer fluid under high-speed and pressure at high temperatures. The impeller is composed of an axial hub and several blades attached along the hub. The weight and shape of an impeller must be balanced, because their imbalances can cause noise and vibration, which can lead to the breakage of the impeller blades during operation. Thus, the hub and blades of an impeller are commonly machined in a 5-axis NC machine to obtain qualified surfaces. The impeller machining strategy or process plan can not be easily obtained due to the complex, overlapped and twisted shapes of impeller blades. Skillful machining process planners may generate appropriate machining strategies based on their experiences and floor data. However, in practice most shop floor data for the impeller machining is not well-structured such that it does not effectively provide a process planner with information for machining strategies and/or process plans. This paper reports the development of a case-based machining strategy support system (CBMS) that employs case-based reasoning to obtain the machining strategy of an impeller by using the existing machining strategies of the shop floor. The CBMS generates impeller machining strategies through a stepwise reasoning process considering the similarity features between the blade shapes and machining regions. A case study is provided to demonstrate that CBMS can generate useful machining strategies facilitating process planners. The developed system can simulate the tool paths of impeller machining and runs on the web.

  • The purpose of this study is developing a method to analyze and evaluate a golf swing motion using the ground reaction force (GRF) data. Proper weight shifting is essential for a successful shot in golf swing and this could be evaluated by means of the forces between the feet and ground. GRF during the swing were measured from 15 low-handicapped male golfers including professionals. Four clubs(driver, iron 3, iron 5, and iron 7) were selected to analyze the differences due to different characteristics of club. Swings of each subject were taken using a high speed video camera and GRF data were taken simultaneously by two AMTI force platforms. To simplify the GRF data, forces of the three major component of GRF(vertical, lateral, anterior-posterior force) at 10 predefined temporal events for each trial were selected and the mean of each event were calculated and evaluated. Analyzed vertical GRF (VGRF) data could be divided into two different styles, one-legged and two legged. One-legged style shows good weight transfer to the target leg and most of the previous study shows this style as a typical pattern of good players. Therefore the data from the iron 5 swing obtained from 10 one-legged style golfers are provided as criteria for the evaluation of a swing.

  • Track irregularities have a strong influence on the safety and the ride comfort of trains as well as track maintenance work. A statistical analysis was conducted for track irregularities data measured in Kyoungbu high speed line using a track recording car(EM120). First, the characteristics of EM120, which adopted versine measurement system, were investigated and the transfer function of EM120 was examined. The distributions of the surface and the alignment which have short wavelength were considerably high and the distribution decreased as wavelength increases. A distribution analysis of the wavelength was carried out according to EN standards and most of the track irregularities were in a D1 wavelength range. The distributions of the amplitude of track irregularities were also investigated and the results show that the distributions of track irregularities decrease rapidly as amplitude increases. These results may be helpful in making track maintenance plans and revising track irregularities criteria.

  • As high-definition television(HDTV) broadcasting were generalized, there have been many researches and developments about large storage capacity and fast data transfer rate in optical disk drives(ODD). Pickup actuators must have high flexible mode frequencies and gain margins. Flexible modes are caused by the flexibility of moving parts in the actuator and a servo bandwidth is limited by them. As a result, the system becomes unstable for high-speed operations in high density reading and recording. In this paper, we suggest improved modeling method that considers the bonding layer. And, flexible mode frequency of actuator is improved by Design of Experiment of lens holder. Magnet circuit is designed considering the relation with moving part. Through improving yoke design, the magnetic flux is changed and DC tilt is reduced. Consequently, we designed actuator which has high flexible mode frequency and gain margins.

  • Pattern matching algorithm is widely used in many application fields such as bio-informatics, intrusion detection, etc. Among many string matching algorithms, KMP (Knuth-Morris-Pratt) algorithm is commonly used because of its fast execution time when using large texts. However, the processing speed of KMP algorithm is also limited when the text size increases significantly. In this paper, we propose a high throughput parallel KMP algorithm considering CPU-GPU memory hierarchy based on OpenCL in GPGPU (General Purpose computing on Graphic Processing Unit). We focus on the optimization for the allocation of work-times and work-groups, the local memory copy of the pattern data and the failure table, and the overlapping of the data transfer with the string matching operations. The experimental results show that the execution time of the optimized parallel KMP algorithm is about 3.6 times faster than that of the non-optimized parallel KMP algorithm.

  • We present a sequential stereoscopic display system using volume holographic storage. Multiple angular multiplexed stereoscopic image pairs are recorded into a photorefractive crystal that can store data with high density, transfer them with high speed, and select a randomly chosen data element. The reference beam with Bragg selectivity is scattered by the index grating and the diffracted beams are propagating along the directions of the stereoscopic image pairs. The images are to be suitably projected on the left and right display plane sequentially for stereoscopic video viewing.

  • We propose an optical fingerprint identification system using volume hologram for database of matched filter. Matched filters in VanderLugt correlator are recorded into a volume hologram that can store data with high density, transfer them with high speed, and select a randomly chosen data element. The multiple reference fingerprint photographs of database are prerecorded in a photorefractive material in the form of Fourier transform images, simply by passing the image displayed in a spatial light modulator through a Fourier transform lens. The angular multiplexing method for multiple holograms of database is achieved by controlling the reference directions with a step motor. Experimental results show that the proposed system can be used for secure entry systems to identify individuals for access to a restricted area, security verification of credit cards, passports, and other IDs.
