  • In this paper, magneto-rheological(MR) damper is studied for vibration control of large infra structures under earthquake. Generally, active control devices need a large control force and a high power supply system to reduce the vibration effectively. Large and miss tuned control force may induce the dangerous situation such that the generated large control force acts to amplify the structural vibration. Recently, to overcome the weaknesses of the active control, the semi-active control method is suggested by many researchers. Semi-active control uses the passive control device of which the characteristics can be modified. Control force of the semi-active device is not generated from the actuator with power supply. It is generated as a dynamic reaction force of the device same as in the passive control case, so the control system is inherently stable and robust. Unlike the case of passive control, control force of semi-active control is adjusted depending on the measured response of the structure, so the vibration can be reduced more effectively against various unknown environmental loads. Magneto-rheological(MR) damper is one of the semi-active devices. Dynamic characteristics of the MR material can be changed by applying the magnetic fields. So the control of MR damper needs only small power. Response time of MR to the input voltage is very short, so the high performance control is possible. MR damper has a high force capacity so it is adequate to the vibration control of large infra structure. Because MR damper has a nonlinear property, normal control method used in active control may not be effective. Clipped optimal control, modified bang-bang control etc. have been suggested to MR damper by many researchers. In this study, sliding mode fuzzy control(SMFC) is applied to MR damper. Genetic algorithm is used for the controller tuning. To verify the applicability of MR damper and suggested algorithm, numerical simulation on the aseismic control is carried out. Simulation model is three-story building structure, which was used in the paper of Dyke, et al. The control performance is compared with clipped optimal control. The present results indicate that the SMFC algorithm can reduce the earthquake-induced vibration very effectively.

  • This paper proposes a new linear magnetic damper for absorbing shock from a crash accident involving high speed vehicles. The magnetic damper is composed of a conductive plate, a yoke and permanent magnets which are constructed to a Halbach array to improve the damping force. In order to calculate the damping force, finite element analysis(FEA) using J-Mag, a commercial FEA tool, is performed and the results are validated by the experiment. Also, the design optimization of the plate generating the eddy current causing the damping force performed to obtain the most efficient damping force. Finally, the specifications and the performance of the proposed magnetic damper are represented.

  • Due to the inherent nonlinear nature of Electro-rheological (ER) fluid dampers, one of the challenging aspects for utilizing these devices to achieve high system performance is the development of accurate models and control algorithms that can take advantage of their unique characteristics. In this paper, the nonlinear damping force model is made to identify the properties of the ER damper using higher order spectrum. The higher order spectral analysis is used to investigate the nonlinear frequency coupling phenomena with the damping force signal according to the sinusoidal excitation of the damper. Also, this paper presents an inverse model of the ER damper, i.e., the model can predict the required voltage so that the ER damper can produce the desired force for the requirement of vibration control of vehicle suspension systems. The inverse model is constructed by using a multi-layer perceptron neural network. A quarter-car suspension model is considered in this paper for analysis and simulation. Simulation results show that the proposed inverse model of ER damper can obtain control voltage of ER damper for required damping force.

  • The Hybrid Mass Damper (HMD) has proven effective in mitigating vibrations in high-rise structures subject to seismic and wind-induced excitations. One derivative configuration of the HMD mounts an Active Mass Damper (AMD) atop a Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). However, the control efficacy of such HMDs may be compromised when confronted with loads that exceed their design parameters. Additionally, the confined structural space within high-rise structures often limits the feasibility and economic viability of retrofitting HMD systems. This study introduces an Acceleration-based Fuzzy Power Approach Rate Sliding Mode Control (AFP-SMC) algorithm aimed at enhancing the control efficacy of HMDs while minimizing their stroke and force output requirements. Employing the Canton Tower as a research prototype, an analytical model incorporating HMDs was established, and a comparative analysis between the AFP-SMC and Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control algorithms was conducted for efficacy. The control performance of the AFP-SMC control algorithm under different control parameter variations was investigated. Furthermore, by experimentally assessing the AMD subsystem within the Canton Tower, friction and ripple force formulas were derived to bolster the analytical model, thereby validating the robustness of the AFP-SMC algorithm. The results show that the proposed AFP-SMC algorithm effectively reduces the vibration response of the structure and the stroke and control force output of HMDs, and exhibits superior overall control performance and robustness compared to the LQG algorithm.

  • This paper presents a design of magnetorheological (MR) damper for control vibration of washing machine. This design is based on the requirements such as small dimensions with high damping force, and minimal consumed energy. The MR damper is designed using the shear mode of MR fluid, and Bingham plastic model is used for optimization process. In this design, a multi-coil design is adopted for damper to enhance damping force and reduce optimally structural parts. In optimization process, ADPL (Ansys Parametric Design Language) program is applied. Base on the optimal parameters, MR damper is manufactured and tested. In evaluation of MR damper, a modified sliding mode control is formulated and applied in both simulation and experiment. Results of experiment show that the MR damper satisfy the requirement of damping force for vibration control of washing machine.

  • A novel asymmetrical resistance friction damper (ARFD) was proposed in this study to be applied on a rocking column base. The damper comprises multiple steel plates and was fastened using high-strength bolts. The sliding surfaces can be switched into one another and can cause strength to be higher in the loading direction than in the unloading direction. By combining the asymmetrical resistance with the restoring resistance that is generated due to an axial load on the column, the rocking column base can develop a self-centering behavior and achieve high connection strength. Cyclic tests on the ARFD proved that the damper performs a stable asymmetrical hysteretic loop. The desired hysteretic behavior was achieved by tuning the bolt pretension force and the diameter of the round bolt hole. In this study, full-scale, flexural tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of the column base and to verify the analytical model. The results indicated that the column base exhibits a stable self-centering behavior up to a drift angle of 4%. The decompression moment and maximum strength reached 42% and 88% of the full plastic moment of the section, respectively, under a column axial force ratio of approximately 0.2. The strengths and self-centering capacity can be obtained by determining the bolt pretension force. The analytical model results revealed good agreement with the experimental results.

  • This paper presents vibration control performances of a commercial magnetorheological (MR) suspension via new control strategy considering hysteresis of the field-dependent damping force of MR damper. A commercial MR damper which is applicable to high class passenger vehicle is adopted and its field-dependent damping force is experimentally evaluated. Preisach hysteresis model for the MR damper is identified using experimental first order descending (FOD) curves. Then, a feed-forward compensation strategy for the MR damper is formulated and integrated with a linear quadratic regulation (LQR) feedback controller for the suspension system. Control performances of the proposed control strategy for the MR suspension is experimentally evaluated with quarter vehicle test facility.

  • Recently, the frequency and magnitude of earthquakes are increasing worldwide. In Korea, the Gyeongju earthquake (2016) and the Pohang earthquake (2017) caused structural damage to many buildings. Since Korea's seismic design standards were revised to three or more stories in 2005, five-story buildings built before the revision are not designed to be earthquake-resistant. In this situation, if strong earthquake occurs in Korea, there will be great damage. To prevent this, seismic retrofit of buildings should be necessary. The seismic retrofit of classical method is mainly used to reduce the displacement generated in the structure by strengthening stiffness and strength. However, since this method increases the base shear force of the structure, it is difficult to apply it to buildings which have weak foundation. Therefore, in this study, we propose the damper system that reduces the response displacement of buildings and suppresses the increase of base shear force by using high damping rubber and steel. And the seismic performance of the damper system is verified through the experiment and the seismic analysis of the structure.
