The fineness degree of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC henceforth) usually used in Korea's construction sites, is designated as over 2,800㎠/g. But the higher the fineness, the surface area of hydration reaction on water increases as well, resulting in large early age strength and high-intensity; so the trend is to prefer a high degree of fineness. But from a pore-space filling perspective, fine-particled cement is not always beneficial to intensity. Therefore in this study artificial modifications were given to cement fineness to analyze the effect of various fineness changes on the liquidity, air quantity and intensity of lean mixture cement mortar. As a result, the greater the degree of fineness, the better the cement was, with fine particle+OPC having the most satisfactory results due to consecutive particle distribution.

As part of the effort to shorten the construction period, this study examined the strength expression characteristics at the early age of concrete using high fineness cement and blast furnace slag. accordingly to provide a basic data on how to solve the problem that the initial strength is lowered.

The purpose of this paper was to study of blast furnace slag cement of high early strength and replacement ordinary portland cement. we prepared the specimens of cement and concrete with various mixing proportions of elementary materials. For example, clinker, gypsum(1~10%), fineness $4, 000~6, 000cm^2/g$ of blast furnace slag(30~50%), limestone etc. As a result of this study, fineness $(4, 000cm^2/g)$ blast furnace slag was of used replacement ordinary portland cement and fineness $(6, 000cm^2/g)$ blast furnace slag was of used blast furnace slag cement of high early strength.

Blast-furnace slag cement has been used widely as a structural material due to the latent hydraulicity of granulated ground blast furnace slag(GGBS)for a long time as The wall as ordinary portland cement. In this study, based on the fundamental investigation on the high strength and high durable concrete using the high fineness GGBS the following remarks can be made. 1) The average desired strenth of concrete is Or=600~800kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 2) The above high strength concrete using the high fineness GGBS is more workable than those using only OPC. 3) The adiabatic temperature and drying shringkage decrease, so the density and resistance to sea water attack increase as results. 4)The unit cement content and unit air entrained admixture at the same desired strength of concrete decrease, so the economical high strength concrete can be manufactured from using the high fineness GGBS.

The cement industry is considered a major industry for reducing greenhouse gases, increasing the amount of binding materials that can replace cement in concrete is known as the most effective method for reducing carbon dioxide. Therefore, research is being carried out to utilize large quantities of by-products that can be used as alternatives to cement. However, there are problems with reduced strength at early age and retarded setting for major reasons that do not increase the amount of mixture of binders used to replace cement. Thus, in this study, normal cement and high-fineness cement were used and physical properties were reviewed by placing differences in fly ash usage depending on the type of cement. As a result, the characteristics of strength were similar, and the hydration temperature was the same level. Also, the durability test showed that the length change, carbonation resistance were better than those of normal cement. Therefore, it is confirmed that the use of high-fineness cement is effective to reduce the amount of cement used and using more by-products.

The aim of the research is to analyze a feasibility of rapid evaluation method for cement fineness by the relation analysis between density measurement using hydrometer and fineness of ordinary Portland cement. Additionally, based on the commercially available cement product, relation between a series of fundamental properties of cement mortar and fineness of cement powder was analyzed. As an experimental result, the actually measured fineness value of cement powder showed a good correlation with the fineness value obtained by hydrometer while there was poor correlation with the fineness value on specification. Especially, the density measurement in three minutes showed the closest relation with cement powder fineness, thus rapid quality evaluation of cement powder can be possible by using the regression equation obtained from the three minutes density measurement. Additionally, there was a high relation between cement powder fineness with a fundamental properties of the cement mortar such as fluidity, air content, setting time, and strength development.

Recently in Korea, may workers have reported the effects of the granulated blast furnace slag[BFS] of high fineness on the strength development of slag cement. We have studied the effect of slag fineness on the strength development of mortar with curing conditions, in order to get the basic data of high strength concrete using BFS. In this paper, we discussed the effects of slag fineness and porosity of mortar and the reaction of slag in hardened slag cement.
Even the finest cement as having a specific surface area of 6.000~8.500$\textrm{cm}^2$/g (Blaine) is to convert into low-porosity hardened cement paste by the use of appropriate plasticizer. In this study, tests were carried out on such a special cement mix(fineness of 6.000$\textrm{cm}^2$/g, Ca-lignosulfonate plus k2CO3 as plasticizer and W/C=0.25) in comparison with ordinary Portland cement. Owing mainly to the high fineness of the cement powder and the low water-to-cement ratio, the hardened low-porosity cement paste showed a very tight microstructure, the pore texture of which consisted of micropores and wide pores only of small radii. The consequence of such mix was hence that the low-porosity special cement had excellent properties of early-high and very high strengths as compared to ordinary Portland cement. Its volume change when dried in the air or re-wetted, exhibited superor behaviour as well.

In this study, fundamental properties of cement were reviewed to apply high fineness cement at low temperature environment. The classified high fineness cement has large proportion of particles below $10{\mu}m$ which affects early hydration: an overall reaction of cement hydration faster. As a result of using high fineness cement, setting time of concrete was reduced and compressive strength was higher than OPC at all ages. Especially, compressive strength was more than double its value compared with OPC after three days curing in low temperature. Faster reaction and higher heat of hydration was verified by calorimetry early and maximum heat of hydration was analyzed by adiabatic temperature raising test. The analysis of this study confirmed that high fineness cement can be suitable to be used in low temperature environment.
This study investigated the fluidity, heat of hydration, setting time, strength development, and characteristics of hydration and pozzolanic reactions of high-strength high-volume ground granulated blast-furnace slag(GGBFS) blended cement pasts with the water-to-binder ratio of 20% by experiments, and analyzed the effects of the replacement ratio and fineness of GGBFS on the hydration and pozzolanic reaction. The results show that, in the high-strength mixtures with low water-to-binder ratio, the initial hydration is accelerated due to the "dilution effect" which means that the free water to react with cement increases by the replacement of cement by GGBFS, and thus, strengths at from 3 to 28 days were higher than those of plain mixtures with ordinary Portland cement only. Whereas it was found that the long term strength development is limited because the hydration reaction rates rapidly decreases with ages and the degree of pozzolanic reaction is lowered due to insufficient supply of calcium hydroxide according to large replacement of cement by GGBFS. Also, the GGBFS with higher fineness absorbs more free water, and thus it decreases the fluidity, the degree of hydration, and strength. These results are different with those of normal strength concrete, and therefore, should be verified for concrete mixtures. Also, to develop the high-strength concrete with high-volume of GGBFS, the future research to enhance the long-term strength development is needed.
