  • This paper presents a filter bank designed for the multi-channel audio equalizer. A time-shared multiplier is also proposed to implement the equalizer with a minimum number of gates when it is synthesized with ASIC or FPGA. Further reduction of the number of required gates is achieved by designing the multiplier based on a cascaded sequential circuit utilizing partial multiplications. The equalizer is realized with FPGA and its real-time operation verifies the reliability and high fidelity of the designed system.

  • The flame cell dynamics in 2-D opposed nonpremixed tubular configuration was investigated using high-fidelity numerical simulations. The diffusive-thermal instability occurs as the $Damk{\ddot{o}}hler$ number, Da, approaches the 1-D extinction limit of the tubular flames and several flame cells are generated depending on Da, and flame radius. In general, the number of flame cells are found close to the largest wave number from the linear stability analysis. It was also found from the displacement speed analysis that during the local flame extinction and cell formation, negative edge flame speed is observed due to small gain from reaction compared to large loss from diffusion.

  • This paper presents an intuitive and powerful way to study and design motor drive control. The control of induction motors, as most widely used machines, is discussed. Thanks to ultra low latency and high fidelity Hardware-in-the-Loop systems, different aspects of up-to-date drive regulation are examined. A power stage, comprised of a grid voltage source, a rectifier, a VSC inverter and an induction motor, is emulated on the HIL platform in real time. A digital signal controller is plugged into the interface board and connected to the HIL emulation platform, without any hardware modifications. For motor control and power electronics applications, a dedicated Texas Instruments TMS320F2808 DSP is chosen. The same controller can drive an emulation platform and a real device with no modifications. Current and speed control loop test results are presented and discussed.

  • Mitotic spindle mediates the segregation of chromosomes in the cell cycle and the proper function of the spindle is crucial to the high fidelity of chromosome segregation and to the stability of the genome. Nucleation of microtubules (MTs) from centrosomes and chromatin represents two well-characterized pathways essential for the assembly of a dynamic spindle in mitosis. Recently, we identified a third MT nucleation pathway, in which existing MTs in the spindle act as a template to promote the nucleation and polymerization of MTs, thereby efficiently amplifying MTs in the spindle. We will review here our current understanding on the molecular mechanism, the physiological function and the cell-cycle regulation of MT amplification.

Attitude Control System Design & Verification for CNUSAIL-1 with Solar/Drag Sail

  • CNUSAIL-1, to be launched into low-earth orbit, is a cubesat-class satellite equipped with a $2m{\times}2m$ solar sail. One of CNUSAIL's missions is to deploy its solar sail system, thereby deorbiting the satellite, at the end of the satellite's life. This paper presents the design results of the attitude control system for CNUSAIL-1, which maintains the normal vector of the sail by a 3-axis active attitude stabilization approach. The normal vector can be aligned in two orientations: i) along the anti-nadir direction, which minimizes the aerodynamic drag during the nadir-pointing mode, or ii) along the satellite velocity vector, which maximizes the drag during the deorbiting mode. The attitude control system also includes a B-dot controller for detumbling and an eigen-axis maneuver algorithm. The actuators for the attitude control are magnetic torquers and reaction wheels. The feasibility and performance of the design are verified in high-fidelity nonlinear simulations.

  • A new approach, Multi-Objective Design Exploration (MODE), is presented to address Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) problems by CFD-CSD coupling. MODE reveals the structure of the design space from the trade-off information and visualizes it as a panorama for Decision Maker. The present form of MODE consists of Kriging Model, Adaptive Range Multi Objective Genetic Algorithms, Analysis of Variance and Self-Organizing Map. The main emphasis of this approach is visual data mining. An MDO system using high fidelity simulation codes, Navier-Stokes solver and NASTRAN, has been developed and applied to a regional-jet wing design. Because the optimization system becomes very computationally expensive, only brief exploration of the design space has been performed. However, data mining result demonstrates that design knowledge can produce a good design even from the brief design exploration.

  • This paper deals with the State-Dependent Riccati Equation (SDRE) Technique for the design of helicopter nonlinear waypoint guidance controller. To generate the flight guidance through multiple waypoints, we use the trigonometric spline. The controller design and its validation is based upon a level 2 simulation helicopter model and the designed SDRE controller is applied to the trajectory tracking problems. To validate the designed SDRE controller, the simulation environment of high fidelity helicopter model is developed using three independent computers. This paper focuses on the validation the present SDRE controller through the helicopter waypoint guidance simulation.

Study for the Information Operations for Long Unattended Periods of Time at the Space System

  • The space systems are being operated in a uncertain space environment and are desired to have autonomous capability for long periods of time without frequent telecommunications with the ground station. At the same time, requirements for new set of satellite system set of projects/systems calling for "autonomous" operations for long unattended periods of time are emerging. Since, by the nature of space systems, it is desired to perform its mission flawlessly and also it is of extreme importance to have fault-tolerant sensors and actuators for the purpose of validating science measurement data for the mission success. This studies focused on the identification/demonstration of critical technology innovations that will be applied to the Validation Control System.

신경회로망과 퍼지필터를 사용한 근전도신호의 기능변별에 관한 연구 (A Study on Function Discrimination for EMG Signals Using Neural Network and Fuzzy Filter)

  • The most important requirement for the controller of a prosthetic arm is that it has a high fidelity discriminator where the motion control may be performed open loop using EMG signals as a control source. Therefore, it is very effective method to reduce the influence of misclassification of classifier for the total system performance. This paper presents the new function discrimination method which combines MLP classifier and frizzy filter by stages for the requirement. The major advantage of MLP is a consistent learning capability for the easy adaptation to environments. The fuzzy filter uses all informations of MLP outputs and prior EMG activity informations which increase as the experience increases. That property is superior to one which uses maximum output of MLP in view of information amounts and quality. Simulation result shows that proposed method is superior to the probabilistic model, MLP model and the combined model of both in the respect of discrimination quaity.

  • To understand fundamental characteristics of combustion in a small scale device, the effects of the momentum and heat loss on the stability of laminar premixed flames in a narrow channel are investigated by two-dimensional high-fidelity numerical simulation. A general finding is that momentum loss promotes the Saffman-Taylor (S-T) instability which is additive to the Darrieus-Landau (D-L) instabilities, while the heat loss effects result in an enhancement of the diffusive-thermal (D-T) instability. These effects are also valid in nonlinear behavior of the premixed flame. The simulations of multiple cell interactions are also conducted with heat and momentum loss effects.
