  • This paper presents a study on the permittivities of the carbon black/epoxy composite at microwave frequency. The measurements were performed at the frequency band of $1\;GHz\~18\;GHz$. The experimental data show that the complex permittivities of composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the carbon black dispersion. The frequency characteristics of dielectric constants and ac conductivities of composites show the good conformity with descriptions of the percolation theory, satisfying the general scaling relation. The measuring frequency band is over the critical frequency, below that the ac conductivities of composites are constant to the frequency. The values of dielectric constants and ac conductivities have consistent relationships with the carbon black concentration. The A new scheme, that is a branch of Lichtenecker-Rother formula, is proposed to obtain a mixing law to describe the complex permittivities of the composites as function frequency and concentration of carbon black.

  • SiC has an excellent resistance to oxidation and corrosion, high temperature strength and good thermal conductivity. However, it is difficult to density because of its highly covalent bonding characteristics. Hot-press sintering process was applied to fabricate fully densified SiC ceramics with carbon and boron addition as a sintering additive. The addition of carbon improved the mechanical properties of SiC because it could induce a fine and homogeneous microstructure by the suppression of abnormal growth of SiC grain. Also, the addition of carbon could control the phase transformation of SiC. The phase transformation of 6H to 4H increased with sintering temperature but the addition of carbon decreased that kind of phase transformation.

  • Specific rates of solvolysis of 1-adamantyl fluoroformate in hydroxylic solvents have been measured by an electric conductivity method under various pressures. The activation parameters (${\Delta}V^{\neq}{_o},\;{\Delta}{\beta}^{\neq},\;{Delta}H^{\neq},\;{Delta}S^{\neq}$,/TEX>) and average pressure within the solvation-shell of activated complex (charge development) have been estimated from the rates. Also, the selectivities for the formation of solvolysis products in aqueous ethanol have been determined by response-calibrated GC. The values of ${\Delta}V^{\neq}{_o},\;and\;{\Delta}{\beta}^{\neq}$ are both negative, but ${Delta}H^{\neq}$ is positive and ${Delta}S^{\neq}$, is large negative. This behavior is discussed in terms of electrostriction of solvation. From these results, it could be postulated that the solvolysis of 1-adamantyl fluoroformate have two major reaction pathway.

  • To understand the effects of fluctuations in dam discharge due to river environments and phytoplankton communities, we monitored such environments and phytoplankton communities biweekly, from February 2001 to February 2002 and from February 2004 to February 2005, in the lower Han River (LHR), South Korea. The phytoplankton abundance during the dry season was approximately two times higher than that during the rainy season. In particular, fluctuations in diatom assemblages, which constituted over 70% of the total phytoplankton abundance, were affected severely by the changes in the discharge. When a large quantity of water in a dam was discharged into the LHR, the conductivity and the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased rapidly, whereas the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved silica (DSi) increased immediately. Time-delayed relationship also revealed that the dam discharge had an immediately significant negative relationship with phytoplankton abundance. On the whole, fluctuations in phytoplankton communities in the LHR were influenced much more by hydrodynamics such as dam discharge than by the availability of nutrients. Thus, the variability in these concentrations usually parallels the strength of river flow that is associated with summer rainfall, with higher values during periods of high river discharge.

  • In this study, the stability and EMP shielding performance of metal-based industrial by-products aggregates with excellent conductivity and easy procurement to be used as concrete aggregates for EMP shielding are evaluated. The industrial by-products are electronic-arc-furnace oxidizing slag, copper smelting slag, and ferro-moldibdenum. The composition analysis of aggregates and aggregate stability are evaluated. As a result of the experiment, ferro-moldibdenum is shown to have l ow stability as an aggregate due to its high Free-CaO. The remaining aggregates are evaluated to be safe to use as aggregates for concrete. In addition, industrial by-products aggreagate-specimens excluding ferro-moldibdenum are shown higher compressive strength than the plain specimen. The recycle aggregates, electronic-arc-furnace oxidizing slag and copper smelting slag, are shown excellent EMP shielding performance, the EMP shielding performance is expected to increase if the average particle diameter of the aggregate is small or evenly distributed.

  • The mechanical and electrochemical properties of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-coated Rayon separator were characterized using potassium polyacrylate (PAAK)-KOH electrolyte. The supercapacitive properties of activated carbon supercapacitor adopting the Rayon/PEO separator and PAAK-KOH electrolyte was also tested. As the PEO content increased, the mechanical strength increased. Room-temperature ionic conductivity of over $10^{-2}S\;cm^{-1}$ was obtained at the PEO content lower than 5 wt.%, applicable to a supercapacitor. As a result, the specific capacitance at $1000mV\;s^{-1}$ of the activated carbon supercapacitor adopting the Rayon/PEO separator and PAAK-KOH electrolyte was highly stable after 1000th cycle. This was due to high rate-capability provided by the fact that PEO coating could fix the entanglements among fiber filaments of Rayon.

  • In general, the three major oral functions of edentulous patients-mastication, phonation, esthetics-can be rehabilitated by the complete dentures, and both the resin based complete denture and the metal based complete denture are commonly used by many clinicians today. For the sake of many advantages such as the excellent thermal conductivity, low volumetric change, high strength, low risk of fracture and the better patient's adaptation, the metal based complete dentures are indicated to the several cases. But, there are common failures of these type of dentures mainly by the fracture or the debonding between the resin structures and the metal frameworks which is caused by the discrepancies of the flexural strength and the coefficient of thermal expansion. This is aggravated by the water contamination of the interface when exposed to the oral environment and results in the failure of complete denture treatment. So, the purpose of this study is to compare the bond strength and the fracture patterns of the gold alloy based and the Co-Cr alloy based complete dentures using the PMMA resins and the 4-META adhesive resins. The results of this study were as follows. 1. Both to the PMMA resin and the 4-META resin, the flexural bond strength of gold alloy is lower than that of Co-Cr alloy(P<0.05) 2. To the Co-Cr alloy, the bond strength of the 4-META resin is significantly higher than that of PMMA resin(P<0.05). 3. The flexural strength of the group with the mechanical retention form is significantly higher than that of the group without retention form(P<0.05). 4. Comparing with the other groups, the fracture patterns of the group 3 are quite different from the group 1,2,5.

  • Side friction is often neglected in the analysis of the results of a consolidation test when the specimen has a high ratio of diameter to height. As the height of a specimen increases, however, side friction becomes important. This paper presents an investigation of the effect of side friction on consolidation test results for normally consolidated kaolinite slurry. Consolidation tests were performed to obtain settlement, pore pressure, compressibility, and hydraulic conductivity of kaolinite slurry. The compressibility relationship is corrected for side friction using a modified form of Taylor (1942) analytical solution. Numerical simulations using the CS2 piecewise-linear model are compared with settlement and excess pore pressure measurements. Experimental results show improved agreement with a modified CS2 model in which the effect of side friction is considered. The numerical and experimental results indicate that the side friction is an important factor affecting the rate of consolidation as well as the compressibility relationship for the specimen.

  • $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics are fabricated via hot pressing with different ratios of submicron or nano-sized SiC in a $ZrB_2$-20 vol%SiC system, in order to examine the effect of the SiC size ratio on the microstructures and physical properties, such as thermal conductivity, hardness, and flexural strength, of $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics. Five different $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics ($ZrB_2$-20 vol%[(1-x)SiC + xnanoSiC] where x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0) are prepared in this study. The mean SiC particle sizes in the sintered bodies are highly dependent on the ratio of nano-sized SiC. The thermal conductivities of the $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics increase with the ratio of nano-sized SiC, which is consistent with the percolation behavior. In addition, the $ZrB_2$-SiC ceramics with smaller mean SiC particle sizes exhibit enhanced mechanical properties, such as hardness and flexural strength, which can be explained using the Hall-Petch relation.

  • Bentonite-based grouting has been popularly used to seal a borehole installed for a closed-loop vertical ground heat exchanger in a geothermal heat pump system (GHP) because its high swelling potential. However, if the bentonite-based grouting is conducted in coastal areas, the salinity of groundwater changes in the mineral fabric of bentontie. In order words, an increase of cation concentration in groundwater leads to a reduction in the diffuse double-layer thickness in the bentonite mineral structure, and thus the volume of bentointe-based grouts will decrease proportional to the salinity of groundwater. In this paper, the effect of salinity (i.e., NaCl 0.5M, 0.25M, and 0.1M) on the change of swelling potential for bentonite-based grouts has been quantitatively evaluated for seven bentonite grouts from different product sources. In addition, in case of using addictives such as a silica sand to increase the thermal conductivity of bentonite-based grouts, the possibility of particle segregation has been studied considering the viscosity of grouts and salinity of groundwater.
