Aluminum nitride (AlN), as a substrate material in electronic packaging, has attracted considerable attention over the last few decades because of its excellent properties, which include high thermal conductivity, a coefficient of thermal expansion that matches well with that of silicon, and a moderately low dielectric constant. AlN films with c-axis orientation and thermal conductivity characteristics were deposited by using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). The epitaxial AlN films were grown on sapphire (c-Al2O3) single crystals by PLD with AlN target and Y2O3 doped AlN target. A comparison of different targets associated with AlN films deposited by PLD was presented with particular emphasis on thermal conductivity properties. The quality of AlN films was found to strongly depend on the growth temperature that was exerted during deposition. AlN thin films deposited using Y2O3-AlN targets doped with sintering additives showed relatively higher thermal conductivity than while using pure AlN targets. AlN thin films deposited at 600℃ were confirmed to have highly c-axis orientation and thermal conductivity of 39.413 W/mK.
The thermal conductivity and viscosity(or workability) of graphite-added bentonite grouts and cementitious grouts have been evaluated and compared to determine the suitability of these materials for backfilling vertical boreholes of ground heat exchangers. Seven bentonite grouts from different product sources and a portland cement grout with various mixture ratios were considered in this paper. As a new additive for grout, we choose graphite which has high thermal conductivity. The bentonite grouts indicate that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or with an addition of Graphite compared with that of silica sand. In case of cementitious grout also increase the thermal conductivity and decrease the workability dramatically though an addition of Graphite. Therefore, we cautiously select the amount of graphite and mixture ratio of bentonite and cement considering not only thermal conductivity but also viscosity for the optimum condition of backfilling material.
In case of metal insulation, which is produced by stacking stainless steel sheets and air layers in a multi-stack manner at a specific thickness, insulation performance will be evaluated based on thermal transmittance rather than the intrinsic physical properties of each material such as thermal conductivity. However, there is no standard for measuring thermal transmittance targeted for non-homogeneous insulation which is used in relatively high temperature conditions such as a power station. In this study, the thermal conductivity of homogeneous insulation acquired by the standardized guard hot plate method and the thermal conductivity of homogeneous insulation measured by the newly developed performance tester were compared to verify the confidence level of the tester. As a result, thermal conductivity acquired by the newly developed thermal transmittance tester was about 6% higher than the thermal conductivity measured by the existing guard hot plate method under the anticipated service temperature conditions.

The MOX fuel for LWR is fabricated either by direct mechanical blending of UO$_2$ and PuO$_2$ or by two stage mixing. Hence Pu-rich particles, whose Pu concentrations are higher than pellet average one and whose size distribution depends on a specific fabrication method, are inevitably dispersed in MOX pellet. Due to the inhomogeneous microstructure of MOX fuel, the thermal conductivity of LWR MOX fuel scatters from 80 to 100 % of UO$_2$ fuel. This paper describes a mechanistic thermal conductivity model for MOX fuel by considering this inhomogeneous microstructure and presents an explanation for the wide scattering of measured MOX fuel's thermal conductivity. The developed model has been incorporated into a KAERI's fuel performance code, COSMOS, and then evaluated using the measured in-pile data for MOX fuel. The database used for verification consists of homogeneous MOX fuel at beginning-of-life and inhomogeneous MOX fuel at high turnup. The COSMOS code predicts the thermal behavior of MOX fuel well except for the irradiation test accompanying substantial fission gas release. The over-prediction with substantial fission gas release seems to suggest the need for the introduction of a recovery factor to a term that considers the burnup effect on thermal conductivity.
The present article investigates experimentally and theoretically thermal and optical characteristics of thin film structures through measurement of thermal conductivity of Pyrex 7740 and reflectance in silicon thin film. The $3{\omega}$ method is used to measure thermal conductivity of very thin film with high accuracy and the optical characteristics in thin films are studied to examine the influence of incidence angle of light on reflectance by using the CTM(Characteristics Transmission Method) and the 633 nm He-Ne laser reflectance measurement system. It is found that the estimated reflectance of silicon show good agreement with experimental data. In particular, the present study solves the EPRT(Equation of Phonon Radiative Transport) which is based on Boltzmann transport equation for predicting thermal conductivity of nanoscale film structures. From the results, the measured thermal conductivity is in good agreement with the previous published data. Moreover, thermal conductivities are estimated for different film thickness. It indicates that as film thickness decreases, thermal conductivity decreases substantially due to internal scattering.
The temperature of subsea pipeline, approximately as high as $100^{\circ}C$, is significantly higher than the temperature of surrounding sea water and sediment. In this reason, heat can be lost from the subsea pipeline to cause serious operation problem. Therefore it is important that the subsea pipeline must be designed to ensure that heat loss is small enough. Heat loss of unburied pipeline is higher than buried pipeline. For that purpose, trenching and backfilling system is a commonly used method for maintaining flow assurance in subsea pipeline installation. For this commonly used method, knowing thermal conductivity of backfill is essential to protect a heat loss of pipeline. This paper presents thermal conductivity of backfill soil using laboratory model test and numerical analysis for various backfill. In conclusion, it can be seen that higher the sand content of the man-made backfill sample, the higher the thermal conductivity. On the other hand, as the water content increases, the thermal conductivity becomes smaller.
Nanofluid is a kind of new engineering material consisting of nanoparticles dispersed in base fluid. Nanofluids could have various applications such as magnetic fluids, heat exchanger working fluids, lubricants, drug delivery and so on in present study, various nanoparticles, such as MWCNT (Multi-walled Carbon Nanotube), fullerene, copper oxide, and silicon dioxide are used to produce nanofluids. As base fluids, DI-water, ethylene glycol, oil, and silicon oil are used. To investigate the thermo-physical properties of nanofluids, thermal conductivity and kinematic viscosity are measured. Stability estimation of nanofluid is conducted with UV-vis spectrophoto-meter. In this study, the high pressure homogenizer is the most effective method to produce nanofluid with the prepared nanoparticle and base fluid. Excellently stable nanofluids are produced with the magnetron sputtering system. Thermal conductivity of nanofluid increases with increasing particle volume fraction except water-based fullerene nanofluid which has lower thermal conductivity than base fluid due to its lower thermal conductivity, 0.4 W/mK. The experimental results can't be predicted by Jang and Choi model.
This study aimed to analyze the impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complexes on groundwater's electric conductivity and water temperature. The greenhouse complexes are mainly situated along rivers to secure water resources for water curtain cultivation. We classified the groundwater monitoring well into the greenhouse (riverside) and field cultivation areas (plain) to compare the groundwater impact of water curtain cultivation in the greenhouse complex. The groundwater observation network in Miryang, Gyeongsangnam-do, located downstream of the Nakdong River, was selected for the study area. As a result of analyzing the electric conductivity and water temperature, the following differences were found in the observed characteristics by region. 1) The electric conductivity and water temperature of the riverside area, where the permeability is high and close to rivers, showed a constant pattern of annual changes due to the influence of river flow and precipitation. 2) The flat land in general agricultural areas showed general characteristics of bedrock observation in the case of water temperature. Still, it seemed more affected by the surrounding well's water use and water quality. The electric conductivity did not show any particular trend and was influenced by the surrounding environment according to the location of each point.
Thorium dioxide (ThO2)-silicon carbide (SiC) composite fuel pellets were fabricated via the spark plasma-sintering (SPS) method to investigate the role of the addition of SiC in enhancing the thermal conductivity of ThO2 fuel. SiC particles with an average size of 1㎛ in 10 and 15 vol% were used to manufacture the composite pellets. The changes in the composites' densification, microstructure and thermal conductivity were explored by comparing them with pure ThO2 pellets. The structural and microstructural characterization of the composite pellets has revealed that SPS could manufacture high-quality composite pellets without having any reaction products or intermetallic. The density measurement by the Archimedes principles and the grain size from the electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis has indicated that the composites have higher densities and smaller grain sizes than the pellets without SiC addition. Finally, thermal conductivity as a function of temperature has revealed that sintered ThO2-SiC composites showed an increase of up to 56% in thermal conductivity compared to pristine ThO2 pellets.
In this study, we synthesized and characterized garnet-type Li7-xAlxLa3Zr2-(5/4)yNbyO12 (LALZN) solid electrolytes for all-solid-state battery applications. Our novel approach focused on enhancing ionic conductivity, which is crucial for battery efficiency. A systematic examination found that co-doping with Al and Nb significantly improved this conductivity. Al3+ and Nb5+ ions were incorporated at Li+ and Zr4+ sites, respectively. This doping resulted in LALZN electrolytes with optimized properties, most notably enhanced ionic conductivity. An optimized mixture with 0.25 mol each of Al and Nb dopants achieved a peak conductivity of 1.32 × 10-4 S cm-1. We fabricated symmetric cells using these electrolytes and observed excellent charge-discharge profiles and remarkable cycling longevity, demonstrating the potential for long-term application in battery systems. The garnet-type LALZN solid electrolytes, with their high ionic conductivity and stability, show great potential for enhancing the performance of all-solid-state batteries. This study not only advances the understanding of effective doping strategies but also underscores the practical applicability of the LALZN system in modern energy storage solutions.
