Impact of Inquiry-Based Teaching on Student Attitude toward Mathematics

  • Large Midwest university faculty members proposed the Science and Technology Enhancement Program Project (STEP) to improve students' learning in the secondary mathematics classroom using modules of inquiry-based teaching. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the STEP Project on students' attitude toward mathematics. Hierarchical linear models (HLM) were used to evaluate the impact of the STEP Project. The sample group for the study was 130 ninth grade students enrolled in Integrated Algebra I in a large urban school district. The school was one of eight secondary schools that participated in the STEP Project. The classes in the treatment group were three of five classes ordered in terms of the highest, middle, and lowest mean GPA. The control group consisted of two other middle GPA classes. The classes had an average of 25 students. Teachers who previously had been involved in the STEP Project taught all treatment and control classes. The inquiry-based teaching activities provided by the project were confined to the treatment classes. The survey measuring students' attitudes toward mathematics were obtained for both groups of students. The inquiry-based teaching affected students' attitudes toward mathematics (p < 0.07, ES = 3.07). Especially, students who had preexisting low attitudes toward mathematics were significantly affected by treatment (p < 0.02, ES = 0.02), while the treatment positively affected African American students overall at p < 0.08 (ES = 0.58).

  • A new method to evaluate the protection capability of distribution systems is reported in this paper. This work describes the fuzzy evaluation attributes and aggregation method of evaluation results based on a hierarchical model and the modified combination rule. An evaluation grade index called "protectability" is proposed and is expected to be a very uscful tool in defining an optimal protection and realizing the adaptive protection.rotection.

치위생(학)과 학생의 가치관이 전공만족도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of values on major satisfaction in dental hygiene students)

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of values on major satisfaction in dental hygiene students. Methods: The subjects were 214 dental hygiene students in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do who filled out the self-reported questionnaire after receiving informed consents from January 20 to February 15, 2014. Except incomplete answers, 187 data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0 for Scheffe post hoc test, Pearson correlation coefficient, hierarchical regression analysis, independent sample t-test, and one-way ANOVA. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects and values. General characteristics consisted of gender, age, grade, school record, major choice motivation, and the influencing person to choose the major. The instrument for values was modified from Shin based on MILOV(Multi-Item Measures Of Values) and two professors of dental hygiene verified the validity of the instrument. Instrument for values consisted of 7 questions of values for self-respect, 6 questions of relation oriented values, 5 questions of emotion oriented values, and 5 questions of values for others measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.769 in the study. The instrument for major satisfaction was modified from Na based on Program Evaluation Survey of Illinois University and two professors of dental hygiene verified the validity of the instrument. Major satisfaction consisted of 7 questions of general satisfaction, 5 questions of consciousness satisfaction, 5 questions of curriculum satisfaction and 3 questions of relation satisfaction measured by Likert 5 scale and Cronbach's alpha was 0.887 in the study. Results: Values of self-respect, relationship orientation and grade had significant influence on general satisfaction, while values of self-respect, relationship orientation and gender had significant influence on consciousness satisfaction. Values of relationship orientation, grade and school record had significant influence on curriculum satisfaction. Grade showed significant influence on relationship satisfaction. Conclusions: Values of self-respect and relationship orientation are the most important factors in dental hygiene students. The guidance for professional career and major satisfaction can be accomplished through the values of self-respect and relationship orientation.

아동청소년의 스트레스와 차별가해경험: 인권의식의 조절효과 (Stress and Experience of Doing Harm: Moderating Effects of Human Rights Consciousness)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 스트레스가 아동청소년의 차별가해경험에 미치는 영향과 스트레스와 차별가해경험의 관계에서 인권의식의 조절효과를 확인하는 것이다. 이를 위해 2015년 아동청소년 인권실태조사에서 얻어진 자료를 분석하였다. 대상은 초등학교 4학년~고등학교 3학년 10,424명이다. 조절효과를 확인하기 위해 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하고 설명력의 변화량을 확인하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 스트레스와 인권의식은 차별가해경험에 직접적인 영향력을 보였다. 이는 아동청소년들의 스트레스가 낮을수록 그리고 인권의식이 높을수록 차별가해경험 정도가 낮음을 보여준다. 둘째, 인권의식은 스트레스와 차별가해경험과의 관계에서 조절변수로 확인되었다. 분석결과를 바탕으로 연구의 의의, 제한점 그리고 향후 연구에 대한 제언을 제시하였다.

시판 라면류의 선택 속성이 만족도에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 - 어린이 및 청소년을 중심으로 - (Effects of Instant Noodle (Ramyun)'s Selection Attribution upon Satisfaction - Focus on Children and Adolescents -)

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the influence of instant noodle's selection attribution on satisfaction and to empirically analyze whether or not grade (elementary schoolchildren, middle school students, high school students) plays a moderating role in the relationship between selection attribution and satisfaction. Further, this study examined the differences in demographic characteristics among two groups of subjects divided by instant noodle's selection attribution. Based on a total of 1021 samples, this study verified a total of 3 hypotheses using the SPSS program. Data were analyzed by frequency analysis, chi-square, t-test, factor analysis, reliability analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis. Results of the study were as follows. There were three different instant noodle's selection attributions among the children and adolescents investigated: internal element, external element, and company reliability. The multiple regression results show that internal element (=.391), external element (=.239), and company reliability (=.063) among customers' selection attributions had significant positive effects on satisfaction. In addition, the effect of selection attribution upon satisfaction was partially moderated according to grade. Further, cluster analysis divided subjects into two groups according to instant noodle's selection attribution: high-selection group vs. low-selection group. The wo groups of subjects classified by instant noodle's selection attribution were also different from each other in demographic characteristics. Limitations and future research directions are also discussed.

간호대학생의 의료인 권장예방접종 의도에 영향을 미치는 요인 (The Influential Factors on Nursing Students' Behavioral Intention of Recommended Immunizations for Health Care Personnel)

  • 본 연구는 의료인 권장예방접종에 대한 간호대학생의 건강신념 요인을 검토하고, 예방접종 의도에 건강신념 요인이 미치는 영향을 파악하기 위해 시도되었다. 연구대상자는 간호대학생 260명이었고, 자료는 설문지를 통해 수집되었고, SPSS 23.0 프로그램의 t-test, ANOVA, 피어슨 상관계수 및 위계적 다중회귀를 사용하여 분석하였다. 간호대학생의 권장예방접종 의도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 대한 회귀모형은 유의하였고(F=13.35, p<.001), 주요 영향 변인은 행동의 계기, 자기효능감, 지각된 유익성, 학년 순으로 나타났으며, 모형의 설명력은 36.4% 이었다. 본 연구를 통해 임상실습 중 감염예방을 위한 예방접종의 효과를 강조하고 간호대학생 대상의 의료인 권장예방접종 의도를 향상시킬수 있는 프로그램을 개발하고 적용할 필요가 있음을 확인하였다.

수학 성취와 흥미에 영향을 주는 변인의 성취 집단별 차이 (The Effects of Educational Context Variables on Achievement and Interest in Mathematics in High and Low Achieving Students)

  • 본 연구에서는 학생의 성취 수준에 따라 수학 성취와 흥미에 영향을 미치는 교육맥락변인에 차이가 있는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 TIMSS 2015에 참여한 4학년, 8학년 학생들을 각각 성취도 상위 집단(우수수준 이상)과 하위 집단(보통수준 이하)의 두 집단으로 구분하고, 집단별로 교육맥락변인이 수학 성취와 흥미에 미치는 영향을 위계선형모형을 적용해 분석하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 성취도 상위 집단의 경우에 수학 성취도에 영향을 미치는 변인은 흥미에 영향을 미치지만 그 역은 성립하지 않는다. 그 중 도서 보유량과 학생의 수학 수업 인식은 수학 성취도와 수학 흥미에 영향을 미치는 강력한 변인이었다. 둘째, 성취도 하위 집단 학생들에게 영향을 미치는 변인은 성취도 상위 집단 학생들에게 영향을 미치지만, 그 역은 성립하지 않는다. 4학년의 경우에 도서 보유량, 가정 학습 환경, 취학 전 수리 활동이 하위 집단과 상위 집단의 성취도에 모두 영향을 주었다. 하지만 4학년에서 부모 학력, 학생의 수학 수업 인식 등은 상위 집단 학생들의 성취도에만 영향을 주었고 하위 집단 학생들의 성취도에 영향을 미치지 않았다. 수학에 대한 흥미의 경우에도 4학년과 8학년에서 하위 집단 학생들의 성취도에 영향을 미치는 변인인 학생의 수학 수업 인식은 상위 집단 학생들의 흥미에도 영향을 미쳤으나 도서보유량은 상위 집단 학생들의 흥미에만 영향을 미쳤다.

성별에 따라 아동이 지각한 부와 모의 양육태도와 우울의 관계에서 또래 유능성의 조절 효과 (Moderating Effects of Peer Competence on the Relationship Between Children's Perception of Parenting Attitudes and Depression by Gender)

  • Objective: This study aimed to investigate the moderating effects of peer competence between children's perception of parenting attitudes and depression among $5^{th}$ grade elementary students. The differences are examined based by gender. Methods: 'The Children's Perception of the Parenting Attitudes Inventory', 'Children's Depression Inventory', and 'Peer Competence Inventory' were used to collect data from 200 elementary school students from Seoul, Korea. The research hypothesis were analyzed using t-tests, Pearson's correlation analysis, standard linear regression analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis via SPSS 21.0. Results: The results are as follows: First, only peer competence showed a difference between the boys and girls, where the boys scored higher than the girls. Second, there was a significant correlation between all the factors. Third, the moderating effect of peer competence on the father's parenting attitude was supported only in the boys. Conclusion: The results denote the need of a gendered approach to understanding problems and developing counseling programs to address depression among children. They also demonstrate that high peer competence can be used to treat depression in boys dissatisfied with their father' parenting attitude.

청소년의 미래지향이 자아존중감, 자기통제력, 학업성적, 성 허용성에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Effects of Future Orientation on Self-Esteem, Self-Control, Scholastic Performance, and Sexual Permissiveness among Korean Adolescents)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine adolescent future orientation in relation to education, work and career, and marriage and family. This study also explores the effects of adolescent future orientation in relation to their psychosocial characteristics: self-esteem, self-control, scholastic performance, and sexual permissiveness. Data were collected from 345 students in the second grade (male: 166, female: 179) of two middle schools in Seoul, Korea. Scale for adolescent future orientation was formulated based on literature review. The major findings of this study were as follows. Adolescents were found to be more future-oriented in the areas of work and career and in the area of marriage and family than in the area of education. Several hierarchical multiple regression analyses were also performed to examine the contribution of socio-demographic characteristics and future orientation to predictions of adolescent psychosocial characteristics. This study found that adolescent future orientation significantly predicted their self-esteem, self-control, and scholastic performance, while having no significant influence on sexual permissiveness.

시뮬레이션 기반 비상대비 정부연습의 조치 평가 척도에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Evaluation Scale of Simulation based Government Exercise for Emergency)

  • 본 연구는 '시뮬레이션 정부연습'(가칭)에서 연습 실시자의 조치사항을 평가하기 위한 척도에 관한 연구이다. 평가척도의 지표와 지표별 가중치는 조치사항으로 입력한 기관별 data를 평가하는 기준이 된다. 이것은 평가의 객관성과 일관성을 유지하여 관찰평가관의 주관적인 평가를 보완하게 된다. 그래서 평가지표는 정부연습 평가 목적, 시뮬레이션 환경에서의 측정 가능성, 객관성, 지표간의 중복성과 인과성, 평가결과를 적용하는 등급 등을 검토하여 선정하고, 각 지표는 상대적 중요도가 설정돼야 한다. 본 연구에서는 적시성·정확성·적절성의 3개 주요 지표와 주요 지표별로 각 3개의 등급 지표를 설정하고 지표별 개념을 구분하였다. 지표의 가중치는 지표의 계층구조를 고려하여 AHP 분석으로 산정하였다. 향후 연구서의 평가척도가 '시뮬레이션 정부연습'에 적용되면 정량적인 평가를 통하여 조치 평가의 일관성과 객관성을 확보할 수 있을 것이고 과학적인 기법에 의한 사후검토(AAR)가 가능할 것이다.
