  • Numerous papers that study ad hoc networks have used a hierarchical network structure to enhance scalability. The hierarchical structure typically consists of a number of clusters, each of which has its own clusterhead that maintains information. Clusterheads often need to exchange information among themselves in order to maintain information, and for such cases, a mechanism is needed to efficiently deliver information from one clusterhead to another. Here, we proposed a new distributed algorithm in which every node independently makes the decision about whether or not it forwards a received message. We used a simulation to demonstrate that the algorithm developed for this study is a considerable improvement over the control overhead algorithm.

  • A hierarchical time division multiple access (HTDMA) medium access control (MAC) protocol is proposed for clustered mobile underwater acoustic networks. HTDMA consists of two TDMA scheduling protocols (i.e., TDMA1 and TDMA2) in order to accommodate mobile underwater nodes (UNs). TDMA1 is executed among surface stations (e.g., buoys) using terrestrial wireless communication in order to share mobility information obtained from UNs which move cluster to cluster. TDMA2 is executed among UNs, which send data to their surface station as a cluster head in one cluster. By sharing mobility information, a surface station can instantaneously determine the number of time slots in a TDMA2 frame up to as many as the number of UNs which is currently residing in its cluster. This can enhance delay and channel utilization performance by avoiding the occurrence of idle time slots. We analytically investigate the delay of HTDMA, and compare it with that of wellknown contention-free and contention-based MAC protocols, which are TDMA and Slotted-ALOHA, respectively. It is shown that HTDMA remarkably decreases delay, compared with TDMA and Slotted-ALOHA.

  • This paper describes a low power ROM using single charge-sharing capacitor and hierarchical bit line (SCSC-ROM). The SCSC-ROM reduces the power consumption in bit lines. It lowers the swing voltage of bit lines to a very small voltage by using a charge-sharing technique with a single capacitor. It implements the capacitor with dummy bit lines to improve noise immunity and make easy to design. The hierarchical bit line further saves the power by reducing the capacitance in bit lines. The SCSC-ROM also reduces the power consumption in control unit and predecoder by using the hierarchical word line decoder. The simulation result shows that the SCSC-ROM with $4K{\times}32bits$consumes only 37% power of a conventional ROM. A SCSC-ROM chip is fabricated in a $0.25{\mu}m$ CMOS process. It consumes 8.2mW at 240MHz with 2.5V.

  • In this paper, we propose a delay reduction method for frame-based packet transmit scheduling algorithm. A high-speed network such as ATM network has to provide some performance guarantees such as bandwidth and delay bound. Framing strategy naturally guarantees bandwidth and enables simple rate-control while having the inherently bad delay characteristics. The proposed delay reduction method uses the same hierarchical frame structure as HRR (Hierarchical Round-Robin) but does not use the static priority scheme such as round-robin. Instead, we use a dynamic priority change scheme so that the delay unfairness between wide bandwidth connection and narrow bandwidth connection can be eliminated. That is, we use FIFO (First-In First-Out) concept to effectively reduce the occurrence of worst-case delay and to enhance delay distribution. We compare the performance for the proposed algorithm with that of HRR. The analytic and simulation results show that HFIFO inherits almost all merits of HRR with fairly better delay characteristics.

  • A new local refinement scheme for spline finite element method has been proposed; this scheme involves the use of hierarchical B-spline. NURBS has been widely used in CAD; however, the local refinement of NURBS is difficult due to its tensor-product property. In this study, we attempted to use hierarchical B-splines as local refinement strategy in spline FEM. The regions of high gradients are overlapped by hierarchically-created local meshes. Knot vectors and control points in local meshes are extracted from global meshes, and they are refined using specific schemes. Proper compatibility conditions are imposed between global and local meshes. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified on the basis of numerical results. Further, it is shown that by using a proposed local refinement scheme, the accuracy of the solution can be improved and it could be higher than that of the solution of a conventional spline FEM with relatively lower degrees of freedom.

  • Bayesian statistics can play a key role in the design and analysis of clinical trials and this has been demonstrated for medical device trials. By 1995 Bayesian statistics had been well developed and the revolution in computing powers and Markov chain Monte Carlo development made calculation of posterior distributions within computational reach. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiative of Bayesian statistics in medical device clinical trials, which began almost 20 years ago, is reviewed in detail along with some of the key decisions that were made along the way. Both Bayesian hierarchical modeling using data from previous studies and Bayesian adaptive designs, usually with a non-informative prior, are discussed. The leveraging of prior study data has been accomplished through Bayesian hierarchical modeling. An enormous advantage of Bayesian adaptive designs is achieved when it is accompanied by modeling of the primary endpoint to produce the predictive posterior distribution. Simulations are crucial to providing the operating characteristics of the Bayesian design, especially for a complex adaptive design. The 2010 FDA Bayesian guidance for medical device trials addressed both approaches as well as exchangeability, Type I error, and sample size. Treatment response adaptive randomization using the famous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation example is discussed. An interesting real example of a Bayesian analysis using a failed trial with an interesting subgroup as prior information is presented. The implications of the likelihood principle are considered. A recent exciting area using Bayesian hierarchical modeling has been the pediatric extrapolation using adult data in clinical trials. Historical control information from previous trials is an underused area that lends itself easily to Bayesian methods. The future including recent trends, decision theoretic trials, Bayesian benefit-risk, virtual patients, and the appalling lack of penetration of Bayesian clinical trials in the medical literature are discussed.

  • An enlarging a scale of logical domain organizing Internet, security policy association among entities become complicated. Establishment and control of security policies for each system is a hard problem to solve because of the environment and composite factors with variable properties. In this paper, to solve this actual problems, we orgainze a hierarchical structure of network and than we design the structure of database to apply security policies for secure communication. This enables efficient management of security data and association of security policy by using designed data structure between different domain in hierarchical structure with make secure communication possible.

  • In this paper, it is presented a new technique to the design and real-time implementation of fuzzy control system based-on digital signal processors in order to improve the precision and robustness for system of industrial robot. Fuzzy control has emerged as one of the most active and fruitful areas for research in the applications of fuzzy set theory, especially in the real of industrial processes. In this thesis, a self-organizing fuzzy controller or the industrial robot manipulator with a actuator located at the base is studied. A fuzzy logic composed of linguistic conditional statements is employed by defining the relations of input-output variable of the controller, In the synthesis of a FLC, one of the most difficult problems is the determination of linguistic control rules from the human operators. To overcome this difficult, SOFC is proposed for a hierarchical control structure consisting of basic level and high level that modify control rules.

  • This paper presents an architecture and control logic of a Flexible Manufacturing Cell (FMC) which is one of the important elements under Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) environment. To implement FMC, it is very important to develop a software which can control and monitor the overall system in an integrated environment. Our primary concern in this research is not to develop individual systems, but to integrate them in the hierarchical control level. Progress on the research of integrating CAD/CAM, Process Planning, Off-line Robot Programming and Simulation module into FMC control system is reported. FMC hardware system used here has an Automated Storage & Retrieval System (AS/RS), a conveyor system, a transfer robot, a CNC milling machine, a bar-code system, and an IBM PC/AT as Cell Control System (CCS). In order to demonstrate the operational result, the name plates, text-carved aluminium plates, are manufactured by this system.
