A new method is proposed based on a hidden Markov model (HMM) to estimate and analyze battery states of health. Battery system health states are defined according to the relationship between internal resistance and lifetime of cells. The source data (terminal voltages and currents) can be obtained from vehicular battery models. A characteristic value extraction method is proposed for HMM. A recognition framework and testing datasets are built to test the estimation rates of different states. Test results show that the estimation rates achieved based on this method are above 90% under single conditions. The method achieves the same results under hybrid conditions. We can also use the HMMs that correspond to hybrid conditions to estimate the states under a single condition. Therefore, this method can achieve the purpose of the study in estimating battery life states. Only voltage and current are used in this method, thereby establishing its simplicity compared with other methods. The batteries can also be tested online, and the method can be used for online prediction.
Stethoscopic auscultation is still one of the primary tools for the diagnosis of heart diseases due to its easy accessibility and relatively low cost. It is, however, a difficult skill to acquire. Many research efforts have been done on the automatic classification of heart sound signals to support clinicians in heart sound diagnosis. Recently, hidden Markov models (HMMs) have been used quite successfully in the automatic classification of the heart sound signal. However, in the classification using HMMs, there are so many heart sound signal types that it is not reasonable to assign a new class to each of them. In this paper, rather than constructing an HMM for each signal type, we propose to build an HMM for a set of acoustically-similar signal types. To define the classes, we use the KL (Kullback-Leibler) distance between different signal types to determine if they should belong to the same class. From the classification experiments on the heart sound data consisting of 25 different types of signals, the proposed method proved to be quite efficient in determining the optimal set of classes. Also we found that the class determination approach produced better results than the heuristic class assignment method.
In this paper, we propose a discriminative training algorithm for the stochastic segment model (SSM) in continuous speech recognition. As the SSM is usually trained by maximum likelihood estimation (MLE), a discriminative training algorithm is required to improve the recognition performance. Since the SSM does not assume the conditional independence of observation sequence as is done in hidden Markov models (HMMs), the search space for decoding an unknown input utterance is increased considerably. To reduce the computational complexity and starch space amount in an iterative training algorithm for discriminative SSMs, a hybrid architecture of SSMs and HMMs is programming using HMMs. Given the segment boundaries, the parameters of the SSM are discriminatively trained by the minimum error classification criterion based on a generalized probabilistic descent (GPD) method. With the discriminative training of the SSM, the word error rate is reduced by 17% compared with the MLE-trained SSM in speaker-independent continuous speech recognition.
For audio indexing and targeted search of specific audio or corresponding visual contents, the MPEG-7 standard has adopted a sound classification framework, in which dimension-reduced Audio Spectrum Projection (ASP) features are used to train continuous hidden Markov models (HMMs) for classification of various sounds. The MPEG-7 employs Principal Component Analysis (PCA) or Independent Component Analysis (ICA) for the dimensional reduction. Other well-established techniques include Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and Discrete Cosine Transformation (DCT). In this paper we compare the performance of different dimensional reduction methods with Gaussian mixture models (GMMs) and HMMs in the classifying video sound clips.

In this paper we investigate context dependent acoustic models to improve the performance of the Korean speech recognition . The algorithm are using the Korean phonological rules and decision tree, By Successive State Splitting(SSS) algorithm the Hidden Merkov Netwwork(HM-Net) which is an efficient representation of phoneme-context-dependent HMMs, can be generated automatically SSS is powerful technique to design topologies of tied-state HMMs but it doesn't treat unknown contexts in the training phoneme contexts environment adequately In addition it has some problem in the procedure of the contextual domain. In this paper we adopt a new state-clustering algorithm of SSS, called Phonetic Decision Tree-based SSS (PDT-SSS) which includes contexts splits based on the Korean phonological rules. This method combines advantages of both the decision tree clustering and SSS, and can generated highly accurate HM-Net that can express any contexts To verify the effectiveness of the adopted methods. the experiments are carried out using KLE 452 word database and YNU 200 sentence database. Through the Korean phoneme word and sentence recognition experiments. we proved that the new state-clustering algorithm produce better phoneme, word and continuous speech recognition accuracy than the conventional HMMs.

This paper presents the design of an arm gesture recognition system using Kinect sensor. A variety of methods have been proposed for gesture recognition, ranging from the use of Dynamic Time Warping(DTW) to Hidden Markov Models(HMM). Our system learns a unique HMM corresponding to each arm gesture from a set of sequential skeleton data. Whenever the same gesture is performed, the trajectory of each joint captured by Kinect sensor may much differ from the previous, depending on the length and/or the orientation of the subject's arm. In order to obtain the robust performance independent of these conditions, the proposed system executes the feature transformation, in which the feature vectors of joint positions are transformed into those of angles between joints. To improve the computational efficiency for learning and using HMMs, our system also performs the k-means clustering to get one-dimensional integer sequences as inputs for discrete HMMs from high-dimensional real-number observation vectors. The dimension reduction and discretization can help our system use HMMs efficiently to recognize gestures in real-time environments. Finally, we demonstrate the recognition performance of our system through some experiments using two different datasets.
Diagnosis of pathological voice is one of the important issues in biomedical applications of speech technology. This study focuses on the discrimination of voice disorder using HMM (Hidden Markov Model) for automatic detection between normal voice and vocal fold disorder voice. This is a non-intrusive, non-expensive and fully automated method using only a speech sample of the subject. Speech data from normal people and patients were collected. Mel-frequency filter cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) were modeled by HMM classifier. Different states (3 states, 5 states and 7 states), 3 mixtures and left to right HMMs were formed. This method gives an accuracy of 93.8% for train data and 91.7% for test data in the discrimination of normal and vocal fold disorder voice for sustained /a/.

In this paper, we carried out the performance evaluation of HM-Net(Hidden Markov Network) speech recognition system for Korean speech databases. We adopted to construct acoustic models using the HM-Nets modified by HMMs(Hidden Markov Models), which are widely used as the statistical modeling methods. HM-Nets are carried out the state splitting for contextual and temporal domain by PDT-SSS(Phonetic Decision Tree-based Successive State Splitting) algorithm, which is modified the original SSS algorithm. Especially it adopted the phonetic decision tree to effectively express the context information not appear in training speech data on contextual domain state splitting. In case of temporal domain state splitting, to effectively represent information of each phoneme maintenance in the state splitting is carried out, and then the optimal model network of triphone types are constructed by in the parameter. Speech recognition was performed using the one-pass Viterbi beam search algorithm with phone-pair/word-pair grammar for phoneme/word recognition, respectively and using the multi-pass search algorithm with n-gram language models for sentence recognition. The tree-structured lexicon was used in order to decrease the number of nodes by sharing the same prefixes among words. In this paper, the performance evaluation of HM-Net speech recognition system is carried out for various recognition conditions. Through the experiments, we verified that it has very superior recognition performance compared with the previous introduced recognition system.

Singing voice synthesis is the generation of a song using a computer given its lyrics and musical notes. Hidden Markov models (HMM) have been proved to be the models of choice for text to speech synthesis. HMMs have also been used for singing voice synthesis research, however, a huge database is needed for the training of HMMs for singing voice synthesis. And commercially available singing voice synthesis systems which use the piano roll music notation, needs to adopt the easy to read standard music notation which make it suitable for singing learning applications. To overcome this problem, we use a speech database for training context dependent HMMs, to be used for singing voice synthesis. Pitch and duration control methods have been devised to modify the parameters of the HMMs trained on speech, to be used as the synthesis units for the singing voice. This work describes a singing voice synthesis system which uses a MusicXML based music score editor as the front-end interface for entry of the notes and lyrics to be synthesized and a hidden Markov model based text to speech synthesis system as the back-end synthesizer. A perceptual test shows the feasibility of our proposed system.

We present a framework for 3D hand gesture design and modeling. We adapted two different pattern matching techniques, Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) and Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), to support the registration and evaluation of 3D hand gestures as well as their recognition. One key ingredient of our framework is a concept for the convenient gesture design and registration using HMMs. DTW is used to recognize hand gestures with a limited training data, and evaluate how the performed gesture is similar to its template gesture. We facilitate the use of visual sensors and body sensors for capturing both locative and inertial gesture information. In our experimental evaluation, we designed 18 example hand gestures and analyzed the performance of recognition methods and gesture features under various conditions. We discuss the variability between users in gesture performance.
