This study was performed to investigate the antioxidant effect of 80% ethanol extracts from Pimpinella brachycarpa in vitro. The extraction yields of 80% ethanol extract was 9.23 g/100 g. The extract was further fractionated subsequently by n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, n-butanol and water. Water fraction showed the highest extraction yield among fractions. Antioxidative activities of different fractions were examined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical generation, Rancimat test, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, nitrite scavenging activity, inhibition of lipid peroxidation and peroxide value in linoleic acid in comparison with the commercial antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). Antioxidant activities of n-hexane fraction of Pimpinella brachycarpa ethanol extract were the highest among fractions. Furthermore, the antioxidative capacity of the n-hexane fraction was similar to that of BHT.
In this study, to investigate the anticariogenic effect of red ginseng, the antibacterial effect, cell adherence and biofilm formation inhibitory effect of n-hexane extract of red ginseng marc (HERGM) against Streptococcus mutans, the causative bacteria of caries, were measured. The growth of S. mutans was inhibited in proportion to the concentration of HERGM, and was hardly observed at a concentration above 125 ㎍/mL (MIC =125 ㎍/mL). It was found that HERGM acts on the cell membrane and the nucleic acid component of the cell was leaked. In addition, HERGM inhibited the adherence and biofilm formation of S. mutans by more than 90% at a concentration of 125 ㎍/mL. GTase activity was completely inhibited at a concentration of 50 ㎍/mL of HERGM. In conclusion, it was found that HERGM commonly inhibited the growth and biofilm formation of S. mutans.
To investigate antioxidative effects of n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba on the ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity of rats, Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 100 $\pm$ 20 g were divided into 5 groups; normal group(NOR), ethanol(10 mL/kg, 35$\%$) treated group(CON), n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba 70 mg/kg treated group(Al), n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba 70 mg/kg and ethanol treated group(A2) and n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba 140 mg/kg and ethanol treated group(A3), respectively. The antioxidative activities of ethanol extract of Angelica acutiloba in vitro were decreased in order of n-hexane > ethylacetate > chlorofonn > n-butanol (>) water fraction. The growth rate and feed efficiency rate decreased by ethanol were gradually increased to the adjacent level of the normal group by administering n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba. It was also observed that the activities of SOD of liver, ALT and AST of serum increased by ethanol were markedly decreased in n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba administered group, and not in activites of XO, catalase, as compared with the control group. The depleted content of GSH by ethanol was increased adjacent to normal level by administering n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba. as a dose-dependent manner. These results suggested that n-hexane fraction of Angelica acutiloba has a possible protective effect on the ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity of rats.
To determine the inhibition of mushroom tyrosinase activity, fresh and dried mugwort, Artemisia princeps was extracted initially with water and ethyl alcohol, and subsequently with hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate in that order. The highest yield was obtained from the ethyl acetate (15.2%) and hexane (15.5%) fraction of the ethanolic extract of fresh and dried mugwort, respectively. For all fractions tested, the inhibition of tyrosinase activity by fresh mugwort was higher than that of dried mugwort, and the inhibition ratio of tyrosinase activity was 98.9% in the chloroform fraction and 96.7% in the hexane fraction.
A lipid-soluble extract in ginseng marc was prepared by n-hexane extraction to evaluate its antioxidant and anticancer potential. A hexane extract of ginseng marc (HEGM) possessed a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl free radical scavenging activity which was related to the amount of total phenolics. Also, HEGM showed a potent inhibitory activity on human non-small cell lung cancer (A549, $GI_{50}=34.0{\mu}g/mL$) and colon cancer (SNU-C4, $GI_{50}=45.2{\mu}g/mL$) cells proliferation in vitro in a concentration-dependent manner as did the hexane extract of ginseng with $GI_{50}$ values of $20.0{\mu}g/mL$ in A549 and $37.0{\mu}g/mL$ in SNU-C4. These results imply that HEGM can be utilized as an antioxidant and anticancer substance.
n-Hexane and benzene are organic compounds which have been widely used as industrial solvents. However, they are also increasingly recognized as important pollutants in working environment. The purpose of this study is tp analyze neurotoxicity of benzene and n-hexane. In this study, tibial nerve of Sprague-Dawley rats were observed after exposing them to two different concentrations of these compounds (6000 ppm of n-hexane and 2000 ppm of benzene) which were known to be the levels to cause subacute toxicity for the three different periods; two weeks, four weeks, and six weeks. The following results were obtained from the analysis of variance, Duncan's multiple comparison test, and regression analysis: 1) Myelin sheath thickness of nerve fiber for two n-hexane exposed groups (four weeks and six weeks) were both reduced compared with the control group and the benzene exposed group. 2) There were positive relationships between nerve fiber diameter and myelin sheath thickness for both exposed and control groups. 3) There was no significant difference in myelin sheath thickness from equal diameter nerve fibers between benzene exposed group and control group, but the greater number of thin myelin sheath were observed for n-hexane exposed group compared with control group. Thus, it is concluded that n-hexane tends to reduce the rate of growth of nerve fiber more than the benzene and control group. While these results shed light on understanding the effects of benzene and n-hexane, the duration of exposure was not long enough to apply these results to real working environments. In addition, to further understand the mechanims of nerve degeneration caused by organic solvents, both epidemiological and biochemical studies should accompanied by this kind of study.

A study on the electron beam(E-Beam) decompositions of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) under background gases(helium, nitrogen, oxygen, air) has been carried out. Hexane selected as aliphatic VOCs was irradiated with electron beam using a batch reactor in the dose range of $0{\sim}10kGy$ and at ambient temperature. The concentrations of Hexane were 140 ppmC, 300 ppmC and 600 ppmC, respectively. Irradiation treatment efficiency of Hexane was evaluated by the GC/FID, GC/MSD, and the by-products were analyzed by $CO/CO_2\;and\;O_3$ analyzers. In different concentration, the maximum degrees of Hexane decomposition at 10 kGy were 96.4%(140 ppmC), 88.3%(300 ppmC), and 49.9%(600 ppmC). It was found that the decomposition efficiency of Hexane was higher than that of toluene at the same conditions(140 ppmC). In addition, the formation of acetone, benzene, 2-hexanone, and 3-hexanone were observed after the treatment of Hexane.
This article presents a multi-scale simulation approach starting from the molecular level for the adsorption process development, specifically, in n-hexane adsorption on activated carbon. A grand canonical Monte-Carlo(GCMC) method is used for the prediction of adsorption isotherms of n-hexane on activated carbon at the molecular level. Geometric effects and hydrodynamic properties of the adsorption column are examined by means of the two dimensional CFD(computational fluid dynamics) simulation. The adsorption isotherms from the molecular simulation and the axial diffusivity from the CFD simulation are exploited for the process simulation where the elution curve of n-hexane is obtained. For the first moment(mean residence time) of the pulse-response with respect to temperature and flowrate, the process simulation results obtained from this three-steps multiscale simulation approach show a good agreement with experimental data within 20% of maximum difference. The multi-scale simulation approach addressed in this study will be useful to accelerate the adsorption process development, while reducing the number of experiments required.

In this study, soxhlet extraction and dissolution-precipitation method are used for separating analyte from polymer materials. In soxhlet extraction efficiency test, it has been found that the DCM, Toluene, THF, and mixtures Acetone/Hexane (1:4, v/v) gave good extraction efficiency, while the use of the ethyl ether, acetone/ethyl ether (1:4, v/v), acetone/hexane (1:1, v/v), DCM/hexane (1:1, v/v) resulted in significantly lower values. In case of dissolution-precipitation method, there is no considerable difference with used different dissolving solvent. The elution amount of multi layer silica and Florisil column were determined with hexane 250 mL and 70 mL of hexane, respectively. Range of PBDE in real waste plastics was N.D.~1,028 ppm.

In this paper, the best conditions for the deposition of the high quality diamond thin-film from N-hexane as a carbon source in the microwave plasma process was carried out. Major parameters are the deposition time, flow rates of oxygen and hexane. The deposition time for the steady state thin-film was required more than 4[h], and the suitable flow rates of hexane and oxygen for the high-quality thin-film are 0.4[sccm] and 0.1~0.2[sccm], respectively. In addition, amorphous carbons such as DLC and graphite were grown by increasing the flow rate of hexane, and it decreased by increasing the flow rate of oxygen. Specifically, the growth rate is about 1.5[${\mu}mh-1$] under no addition of oxygen and it decreased about 60[%] as ca. 1.0[${\mu}mh-1$] with oxygen.
