An Analysis of the Comparative Importance of Heuristic Attributes Affecting Users' Voluntary Payment in Online News Content (자발적 독자구독료에 영향을 미치는 온라인 뉴스 콘텐츠의 휴리스틱 속성 간 상대적 중요도 분석)

  • Traditionally, news was consumed only through printed newspapers and broadcasting media, such as radio and television. However, the Internet has enabled people to consume news content online. Since most of online news content has been provided for free, it is not easy for news providers to charge the fixed subscription fee for online news content. Therefore, as an alternative strategy, some online news providers have tried to adopt the Pay-What-You-Want (PWYW) pricing model, which allows users (readers) to pay as much as they want after consuming news content. As this pricing model shows some possibility to grow and replace the unsuccessful monetization strategy of online news content, we therefore examined the comparative importance of seven heuristic attributes (i.e., article evaluation, article share, article comment, article information design, article length, writer SNS, and writer information) affecting readers' voluntary payment behavior through a conjoint analysis with 379 news articles collected from online news Website (i.e., Ohmynews.com) where the PWYW model has been working successfully. This study found that article share and article length are the most important factors which affect online news content users' voluntary payment. Finally, two major and eight minor propositions are suggested based on the findings of the study. This study would suggest guidelines for how to create online news content which induces much more voluntary payment.

Heuristic Designs of SAD Correlation Algorithm for Vision System (비전 시스템 구현을 위한 SAD 정합 알고리즘의 변형)

  • A stereo vision, which is based on two or more images taken from different view points, is able to build three dimensional maps of its environment having various applications including robots and home networks. SAD algorithm, which is based on area-based correlation, is widely used since its regular structure provide abundant parallelism. In this paper, we present heuristic designs of SAD algorithm to meet the demands on accuracy and resource usages in various applications. The disparity abridgement and the window abridgement algorithms can be used for vision systems in low cost and small size. The window shape algorithm can be applicable when object are in specific shapes. The adaptive window algorithm work well when accuracy is the primary concern.

  • Presented in this paper was to evaluate and improve the usability of a web-based logistics information system. The system was developed for the domestic company to track and monitor its own transportation vehicles and for the customers to check the current location of their packages by using Global Positioning System (GPS) and Short Massage Service (SMS). Since the initial system was developed under a tight schedule set by the company, the system designers and programmers did not focus on the usability of the system but on the functionality. Consequently, some usability problems of the system were discovered during the heuristic usability evaluation. This study was required to solve these usability issues. Usability problems of the initial system were identified and analyzed, and the user's requirements for the system were re-evaluated to meet the company's expectation. Several alternative designs were developed by fitted guidelines and then a updated system was developed. The updated system had an empirical usability test to find how much the initial system was improved from the heuristic evaluation. Two kinds of data were gathered during the tests: objective (completion time and number of errors) and subjects' preference. Data showed the updated system is better than the initial system in terms of usability. Presented in this paper includes introduction of the Usability evaluation, usability engineering process applied in this research, alternative design of GUI, usability test and results.

  • The core power control is an important issue for the study of dynamic characteristics in China initiative accelerator driven subcritical system (CiADS), which has direct impact on the control strategy and safety analysis process. The CiADS is an experimental facility that is only controlled by the proton beam intensity without considering the control rods in the current engineering design stage. In order to get the optimized operation scheme with the stable and reliable features, the variation of beam intensity using the continuous and periodic control approaches has been adopted, and the change of collimator and the adjusting of duty ratio have been proposed in the power control process. Considering the neutronics and the thermal-hydraulics characteristics in CiADS, the physical model for the core power control has been established by means of the point reactor kinetics method and the lumped parameter method. Moreover, the multi-inputs single-output (MISO) logical structure for the power control process has been constructed using proportional integral derivative (PID) controller, and the meta-heuristic algorithm has been employed to obtain the global optimized parameters for the stable running mode without producing large perturbations. Finally, the verification and validation of the control method have been tested based on the reference scenarios in considering the disturbances of spallation neutron source and inlet temperature respectively, where all the numerical results reveal that the optimization method has satisfactory performance in the CiADS core power control scenarios.

  • In this paper we study the access network design problem in Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems (UMTS) networks. Given the location of radio base stations (node-Bs), their traffic demands, and the candidate facility centers for locating radio network controllers (RNCs), the problem is to determine the configuration of access network, including the number and location of facility centers, the number of RNCs in each facility center, and the links between RNCs and node-Bs, with the objective being to design such a network at the minimum cost. We provide a mathematical formulation of the problem with constraints on RNC and node-B capacities, along with a lower bounding method. We develop a heuristic algorithm with two different initial solution methods designed to strengthen the solution quality. The computational efficacy of their procedures is then demonstrated on a number of test problems.

  • In this paper, the design of an optimum single input Fuzzy controller for application in dc to ac converters is presented. Contrary to conventional Fuzzy controllers, the proposed controller has a smaller number of rules and tuning parameters but is capable of performing identically to a conventional controller. These benefits lead to a simpler controller design. The controller is designed as a PI controller for small-signal disturbances. However, for optimum large-signal performance, heuristic tuning is used. The tuning is less complicated and hence optimum large-signal performance is achievable. The system is simulated and a hardware prototype was developed for comparison purposes.

  • In this paper, we have constructed an expert system for semiconductor chip encapsulation which combines a knowledge-based system with CAE software. The knowledge-base module includes heuristic and pre analysis knowledge for evaluation and redesign. Evaluation of the initial design and generation of redesign recommendations can be developed from the rules as applied to a given chip package. The CAE programs can be used for simulating the filling and packing stage of encapsulation process. The expert system is a new tool which enables package design or process conditions with high yields and high productivity.

Design of ATM Networks with Multiple Traffic Classes

  • In this paper, we propose a new heuristic design algorithm for the virtual path (VP)-based ATM network with multiple traffic classes, in which QoS constraints associated with traffic class are taken into account. The minimum bandwidth of VP required to carry given amount of traffic is obtained by utilizing an equivalent bandwidth concept, and the route of each VP is placed so that the network cost is minimized while the QoS requirement is fulfilled To evaluate our design algorithm, we consider two kinds of traffic: voice traffic as low speed service and still picture traffic as high speed service. Through numerical examples, we demonstrate that our design method can achieve an efficient use of network resources, which results in providing a cost-effective VP-based ATM network.

Optimum design of braced steel frames via teaching learning based optimization

  • In this study, optimum structural designs of braced (non-swaying) planar steel frames are investigated by using one of the recent meta-heuristic search techniques, teaching-learning based optimization. Optimum design problems are performed according to American Institute of Steel Construction- Allowable Stress Design (AISC-ASD) specifications. A computer program is developed in MATLAB interacting with SAP2000 OAPI (Open Application Programming Interface) to conduct optimization procedures. Optimum cross sections are selected from a specified list of 128W profiles taken from AISC. Two different braced planar frames taken from literature are carried out for stress, geometric size, displacement and inter-storey drift constraints. It is concluded that teaching-learning based optimization presents robust and applicable optimum solutions in multi-element structural problems.

  • AS/RS(Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems) has inflexibility in change after implementation and its initial cost is very high. Therefore, the proper and correct design of AS/RS is needed at the planning stage. Cost and performance are one of the most important factors in AS/RS design. There is a trade-off relationship between them. Velocity and number of stacker cranes have a deep relationship with performance of AS/RS. In this study, a model and a heuristic algorithm for finding optimal rack volumes and velocities of stacker for design of AS/RS are proposed with a numerical example.
