FE Lubrication Analysis and Dynamic Characteristics of Herringbone Groove Air Bearing applied to High-Speed Color Wheel

  • In this study is performed a complex lubrication analysis of a herringbone groove air journal bearing, which shows a big potential as an oilless bearing for a color wheel used as an original color source for a large DLP projection television and rotating at a rated-speed of 10,800 rpm. The Galerkin FE and perturbation methods are used for a lubrication analysis of the bearing. The effects of groove number, angle and depth and bearing clearance on the dynamic stability of the bearing are investigated in terms of the critical mass, and its equilibrium positions, stiffness and damping coefficients are calculated at various rotating speeds. Results have shown that the designed herringbone groove air journal bearing is quite suitable as a support bearing for the considered high-speed color wheel in terms of the complex lubrication performances of the bearing itself.

  • Herringbone groove journal bearing (HGJB) is developed to improve the static and dynamic performances of hydrodynamic journal bearing. Conventional studies on HGJB were based on the Narrow Groove theory assuming that the number of grooves approaches infinity. In this study, an oil lubricated HGJB is analyzed using Finite Element Method. Load carrying capacity, attitude angle, stiffness and damping coefficients are obtained numerically for various bearing configurations especially for the inclined width ratio and asymmetric ratio and compared with the results obtained using Finite Volume Method. The bearing load and stability characteristics are dependent on geometric parameters such as inclined width ratio, asymmetric ratio, groove depth ratio, groove width ratio, and groove angle.

  • The present work is an attempt to calculate the steady state pressure and perturbed pressure of herringbone grooved journal bearings. A generalized coordinate system is introduced to handle the complex bearing geometry. The coordinates are fitted to the groove boundary and the Reynold's equation is transformed to be fitted to this coordinate system using the Gauss divergence theorem. This method makes it possible to deal with an arbitrary configuration of a lubricated surface. The caharacteristics of finite herringbone groove journal bearing are well calculated using this method.

  • Herringbone groove journal bearing (HGJB) is developed to improve the static and dynamic performances of hydrodynamic journal bearing. In this study, static and dynamic compressible isothermal lubrication problems are analyzed by the finite element method together with the Newton-Raphson iterative procedure. This analysis is introduced for prediction of the static and dynamic characteristics of air lubricated HGJB for various bearing configurations. The bearing load characteristics and dynamic characteristics are dependent on geometric parameters such as asymmetric ratio, groove depth ratio, groove width ratio and groove angle.

  • In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of coupled herringbone groove journal bearings and spiral groove thrust bearings with conical motion were numerically analyzed, The bearing performance characteristics were calculated by the perturbation method and are solved by FDM. Stability of bearing was obtained from the threshold of instability.

  • Ball bearings have been widely used for the spindle motor bearing in various kinds of information storage devices. Recently many researchers have been trying to replace ball bearings with fluid film bearings because of their superior NRRO(non-repeatable runout) characteristics. In this study, a numerical analysis has been conducted for the complicate bearing system composed of herringbone groove journal bearing and spiral groove thrust bearing for the spindle motor of the information storage device. At first, spindle motor bearing is modeled as journal bearing part and thrust bearing part separately, and then observed various influences of geometric parameters. Previous studies had considered only the translational motion of the journal bearing. However, this study takes the additional 2-degree of freedom rotation into consideration to attempt to describe the real motion of the spindle bearing. As a result, rotational stiffness coefficients and rotational damping coefficients are obtained. In addition, a spindle bearing system made up of four bearings is modeled and interpreted at once and coefficients of dynamic characteristics of each bearing are obtained. Finally, an eigen analysis of bearing system is made with these results. Through this analysis, it is possible to estimate an unstable condition of the system for given geometric parameters and to propose a method which is able to avoid the unstable condition by a proper adjustment of geometric parameters.

A Study on the Air-Lubricated Herringbone Groove Journal Bearing by Finite Element Method

  • The herringbone groove journal bearing (HGJB) has chevron type grooves on stationary or rotating member of the bearing so that they pump the lubricant inward the grooves when journal rotates. As a result, the pressure is generated around the journal so that the radial stiffness and dynamic stability are improved comparing to the plain journal bearing (PJB) when the bearing operates near the concentric condition. The narrow groove theory, conventionally adopted to simulate the concentric operation of HGJB, is limited to the infinite number of grooves. A numerical study of air-lubricated HGJB is presented for the finite number of grooves. The compressible isothermal Reynolds equation is solved by using Finite Element Method together with the Newton-Raphson iterative procedure and perturbation method. The solutions render the static and dynamic performances of HGJB. Comparison of present results with a PJB validates previously published finite difference solution. The HGJB's geometric parameters influence its static and dynamic characteristics. The optimum geometric parameters are presented for the air-lubricated HGJB in particular conditions.

  • The Reynolds equation, incorporating Elrods cavitation algorithm, is discretized on a rectangular grid in computational space through coordinate mapping in order to accurately analyze a herringbone grooved journal bearing of a spindle motor in a computer hard disk drive. The pressure distribution and cavitation area are determined by using the finite volume method. Predicted results are compared to experimental data of previous researchers. It was found that positive pressure is developed within the converging section of the bearing and that a cavity occurs in the diverging section. Cavitation has been neglected in the previous analysis of the herringbone grooved bearing. Load capacity and bearing torque are increased due to the increased of eccentricity and L/D and the decrease of the grooved width ratio. The maximum load capacity was found to occur at a groove angle of 30 degrees while bearing torque remains constant due to the variation of the groove angle. The cavitation region is significantly decreased with the inclusion of herringbone grooves. However, the region increases with the increase of the eccentricity, L/D, groove angle and the rotational speed and the decrease of the grooved width ratio.

  • This paper presents an optimum design of herringbone grooved journal bearing for spindle motor of hard disk drive (HDD) system. In addition to the conventional “rectangular” groove, various groove profiles are designed. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the oil film and frictional torque are calculated and compared for tile various groove profiles. The “circular”, “valley”, and “reversed saw tooth” grooves do not produce high direct stiffness, since they partly increase the groove depths in the direction of lubricant flow, causing to reduce the pumping action of the bearing. The maximum direct stiffness can be obtained by the “rectangular”, “saw tooth”, and “step” grooves. With the same cross sectional area of the grooves, these three grooves have the same maximum stiffness, damping coefficients, and frictional torque. Among these recommendable grooves, the saw tooth groove may keep its original profile for long, enduring metal-to-metal contact during startup and shutdown.
