A Differentiating pathway of hemocytes in vitro and in vivo of grasshopper, Euprepocnemis shirakii was described using light and electron microscopes. In the interior of body, the stem cells of the hemopoietic organ differentiated into six types of cells respectively which are prohemoyte, plasmatocyte, granulocyte I, granulocyte II, spherulocyte and oenocytoid. The formation of these hemocytes was derived from the stem cells surrounded by a reticular cell. Hemopoietic tissue cultured in the insect media differentiated different hemocytes, but none of them underwent any mitotic division. Morphological features of the cultured cells in media were essentially the same as those of the hemocytes differentiated from the stem cells in vivo. These results were shown that each stem cell could differentiate into different types of hemocytes. It was confirmed that the stem cells possessed the pluripotent differentiation ability to directly each hemocyte, and that the once formed hemocytes in vivo and in vitro didn t undergo further transformation to other hemocytes. The maintenance of circulating hemocytes in grasshopper had been depended on the widely spreading hemopoietic organ situated in the upper surface of the dorsal alary muscle and located on the first to eighth segments.
Insect hemocytes during metamorphosis were studies by histchemical and autoradiographic methods is Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera). The hemocytes were classified into six types, prohemocytes, plasmatocytes, podocytes, granular hemocytes, spherule cells and oenocytoids on the basis of the transitions in shapes and inclnsions of cytoplasms. Proteins, nucleic acids, polysaccharides and lipids in the hemocytes were detected histochemically from larval to pupal stages to learn the rise and fall of them during growth and metamorphosis. Most of the granules consisted of glycogen, neutral mucopolysaccharides and mucoprotein in addition to some granules of neutral fats and phospholipids were found in the granular hemocytes and spherule cells. Mitotic figures and DNA synthetic activities were observed in every type of hemocytes from 2nd to 5th instars, suggesting the all types of hemocytes originated from the prohemocytes. The cytoplasmic filaments of plasmatocytes and pdocytes extended very long in prepupa and pupa and the vermiform cells were the transformed plasmatocytes due to their further differentiation.
The fine structure of the hemocytes in Wolf spider, Pardosa astrigera, is discribed and compared with that of similar cells in other spider species and insects. Five hemocyte types are identified in the hemolymph: prohemocyte, plasmatocyte, granulocyte, spherulocyte and adipohemocyte. Prohemocytes are small with a relatively undifferentiated cytoplasm. The nucleus is comparatively large and has a perinuclear space. Plasmatocytes and granulocytes are pinocytotic function in the hemolymph of the body. The plasmatocytes have some coated pits on the plasma membrane and well developed Golgi complex, The granulocytes appear sequence of events in the formation of coated vesicle from a coated pit on its plasma membrane. Golgi complex become well expressed and give rise to small secretory vesicles which fuse to large bodies. The spherulocytes are larger in cell size than other hemocytes. Their cytoplasm is filled with spherules. The spherules contain the floccurent materials and the helical structured materials, which are 220nm in length and 80nm in width. The adipohemocytes are oval shaped and have a number of lipid droplets.
To understand the role of hemocytes in the shell repair process, a hole was drilled in the right valves of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, and the repair process was observed. Histological observations suggested that the exterior surface of the shell was repaired by aggregated hemocytes. The nuclei of the hemocytes were cleary stained in the regenerated shell while appearing fragmented after calcification at the $7^{th}$ day. Globular calcium granules were genegenerated from the hemocytic monolyer after 6 days of incubation which were morphologically and chemically identical with those from prismatic shell. Our finding suggested that the repaired prismatic shell was composed by aggregated hemocytes and that their endogenous calcium component might support the nucleation of calcium biomineralization during shell repair.
Hemocytes of the spider Araneus ventricosus were investigated with histochemistry, density analysis of percoll gradient, and fine structural examinations using transmission electron microscope. The hemocytes of this spider were classified into two major groups: granulocytes and non-granulocytes. The granular hemocytes were subdivided into three subtypes according to their histochemical properties which are eosinophilic granuloctes(EGs), basophilic granulocytes(BGs) and cyanocytes. The EGs, which have small granules within the cytoplasm comprise about 5% of the total henocytes. However the granules of BGs are larger than those of HGs. The cyanocytes were characterized to contain hemocyanin granules in their cytoplasm. On the other hand, the non-granulocytes were divided into three subtypes; hyaline leucocytes, oenocytoids, and molting homocytes. The hyaline leucocytes are the most abundant and the smallest hemocyte type in this spider. The oenocytoids that have $10{\sim}15{\mu}m$ in diameter are mostly found at the marginal region of the myocardium in the heart tube. The molting hemocytes, which only appeared during the molting period, contains plenty of glycogen particles in their cytoplasm.
Hemocyte parameters of the wild Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas inhabiting intertidal zones in small bays (Gwangyang and Jinhae Bay) on the southern coast of Korea were evaluated using flow cytometry and neutral red retention (NRR) assay. Morphological features, cell count, mortality, DNA damage, phagocytosis, and lysosomal membrane stability of hemocytes were analyzed. Three types of hemocytes were identified in the oyster hemolymph: granulocytes, hyalinocytes, and blast-like cells. Immune related functions of hemocyte including phagocytosis and lysosomal membrane stability were significantly different among the study areas (P<0.05), while cell count, mortality, and DNA damage of hemocytes were not significantly different. In Gwangyang Bay, phagocytosis of granulocytes and lysosomal membrane stability of oyster hemocytes inhabiting inside bay were significantly lower than those of oyster hemocytes in outside bay (P<0.05), indicating that oysters in inside bay of Gwangyang were relatively suppressed the immunological function in hemocytes. Contrary to Gwangyang Bay, immune parameters of oyster hemocytes in Jinhae Bay not showed the difference between sampling sites. In conclusion, flow cytometry and NRR assay using oyster hemocyte has a powerful tool to investigate the cell level in a short time due to no-preprocessing of material.

The hemocytes of the tunicate Halocynthia roretzi are classified into six types based on their size, cellular form, and fine structure of the cytoplasmic granules: hyalinocytes, granulocytes, phagocytes, nephrocytes, morula cells, and multi-vacuole cells. Based on cell size, they are ordered multi-vacuole cells ($7.5{\mu}m$)>nephrocytes ($7.1{\mu}m$)>phagocytes ($6.8{\mu}m$)>granulocytes ($6.1{\mu}m$)>morula cells ($5.7{\mu}m$)>hyalinocytes ($5.4{\mu}m$). The proportion of hemocytes is ranked in the order multi-vacuole cells (54.8%)>nephrocytes (16.9%)>granulocytes (9.9%)>morula cells (8.8%)>phagocytes (6.1%)>hyalinocytes (3.5%).
The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of hemocytes in the hemolymph of the larvae of Pentodon quadridens bidentulus and the characteristics of the hemocytes responsible for cellular immunity during pathogen infection. Granulocytes, plasmatocytes, oenocytoids, spherulocytes, prohemocytes and adipohemocytes were found in the circulating hemocytes. Among them, granulocyte were observed as cells responsible for immunological phagocytosis during entry of foreign substances. In particular, it was observed that the most active phagocytic action occurred within 12 hours in vivo, and that after 24 hours, the immune activation was reduced and converted to a normal state. Plasmatocytes were occasionally observed as immunological response, but the remaining hemocytes were not related to immunological activation.

We successfully extirpated all four hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes of the fifth instar larvae of Bombyx mori, and found that most of the treated silkworms could still develop into the moths. We investigated the changes of the circulating hemocytes and evaluated the effects of extirpation on the hemopoiesis. The results showed that proliferation of circulating hemocytes was sufficient to allow development of the silkworms which complexes were totally extirpated. We also found that hemopoietic organ-wing disc complexes extirpation might cause a certain hemopoietic compensation of the remainder complexes during early spinning. Exogenous hormones such as $20-{\beta}-hydroxyecdysone$ and juvenile hormone analog had a positive effect on hemocytes proliferation.
The ultrastructures of hemocytes of Acrida cinerea Thunberg were studied and 4 types of hemocytes were noticed; prohemocytes, plasmatocytes, granular cells and adipohemocytes. Prohemocytes were the smallest of all cell types with poor cytoplasmic organelles, such as endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complexes, vacuoles and Iysosomes. Plasmatocytes were round or oval with many cytoplasmic processes, vacuoles, endoplasmic reticulum and even myelinated bodies. Granular cells were spindle-shaped or oval. In both cases, they are characterized by various granules. Adipohemocytes were very rich in lipid droplets and microtublles.
