  • This study was conducted to investigate nutritional status by anthropometric meas-urement and to assess the validity of indicators for nutritional status of preschool children. Health examinations, including blood and urine tests, were done for 799 childern aged 2 to 6 years. The mean anthropometric measurements of height, weight , head circumference, and chest circumference were 90.2cm, 13.9kg, 47.7cm, 50.9cm for 2 years (n=13), 94.8cm, 15.2kg, 43.3cm, 47.0cm for 3 years(n=125), 100.7cm, 16.4kg, 46.2cm, 50.5cm for 4 years(n=272), 106.5cm, 18.1kg, 48.8cm, 53.8cm for 5 years(n=253), 113.0cm 20.4kg, 50.4cm 56.9cm for 6 years(n=136), respectively. All anthropometric measureemnts were significantly different by age and sex. The results of physical examinations excluding dental examination were normal for all studied children. Urine test results were also normal for the subjects. The most common blood type was A and the rarest one was type AB. The mean hemoglobin concentration was 11.84g/dl for boys(n=398), 11.86g/dl for girls, and 11.85kg/dl for all. The percentage of childeren whose hemoglobin concentration was less than 11.0g/dl was 21.6% for boys and 18.9% for girls. The percentage of children whose height for age, weight for age, and weight for height were in the rang of median $\pm$1 standard devication(S.D) was 71.7% , 65.6%, and 67.0% for each indicator. Obese childeren whose weight for height or weigth for age was more than median +2S.D. were 5.2% while tall children whose height for age was more than median +2S.D, were 1.8% . Past and recent nutritional status of most children(87.2%) were assessed as normal by the combination of three indicators(height for age, weight for age, weight for height). The percentate of coincidence between for height) and one assessed by anthropometric measurements (height for age, weight for age, weight for height) and one assessed by physicial was 59.6%, 69.3% and 67.8% for each indicator, respectively. The distribution of subjects by height for age was significantly different between normal and anemic groups. With these results , the nutritional status of children the studied was normal. The anthropometric measurements reflected the nutritional status of childeren relatively well. In conclusion, in comparison with biochemical meausurements anthropometric measurements are relatively simple and effective indicators for nutritional assessement of children in large health and nutrition suveys in Korea.

  • This study aims to evaluate the degree of malnutrition of children by three nutritional indicators-Weight for Age, Hight for Age, Weight for Height. The results are as follows; The average height and weight of children are much lower than Korea average height and weight. In terms of Weigh for Age, 20-40% of the samples belongs to below-2 standard deviation from the mean of reference group. 90% of the samples falls into the region below the mean. The standard deviation score indicates negative sign for eighty to ninety percent of the samples. The malnutrition of the samples is also confirmed in terms of Height for Age. In terms of Weight for Height, the mean of the samples is not significantly different from that of the reference group. Tests of the nutritional status under basis of three nutritional indicators show that approximately 50% of the samples had suffered from malnutrition and 17% of the samples have suffered from malnutrition.

  • The purpose of the study was to develop generalized equations for estimating stature and weight for the nonambulatory elderly persons. Height weight recumbent knee height total ann length, midarm, waist and calf circumferences, triceps and subscapular skinfolds were measured from over 60 years old 315 ambulatory elderly. The equations to predict stature and weight were derived from participants in the validation sample and were applied to the participants in the cross-validation to test the accuracy and validity of equations. Stature and weight were significantly and negatively associated with age of women and similar patterns observed in men but associated to a slight degree. Knee height and total arm length were highly correlated with stature but the majority of the variances in stature was accounted for by knee height for both the men and women. In men, waist circumference was the most significantly correlated with weight and am, calf circumferences and so forth. But in women arm circumference was the highest then waist and calf circumference in order. The possible predictor variables to estimate of stature were knee height total arm length and age for both elderly men and women. Predictor variables to estimate of weight were recumbent measures of waist am, calf circumferences and knee height for both sexes. Inclusion of skinfold thickness measurements did not improve the prediction power of estimation for weight. When both equations developed from the present study and Chumlea's study were applied to cross-valida-tions samples, the equations derived from present study showed better accuracy and validity. The presentation of prediction equations using two, three, or four recommended measurements allows the selection of an equation based upon the measurements that are possible to collect on an individual basis.

  • This study was carried out to know physical growth and development, physical and nutritional indices and body fat weight and so forth by semi-longitudinal research method to measure body height, body weight, chest girth and sitting height of 260 of general high school and 306 of vocational high school 3rd grade students who are living in Seoul and born from 1966 March 1st to 1967 Feb.28th. The results are as follows: 1) Physical growth and development Growth in terms of body height showed one step straight linear development, andthat of body weight showed two step straight linear development in each section in high school. The age of cross over between two sexes of general high school students was between 10.6 to 12. 3 years in body height, between 10.8 to 13 years in body weight, between 11.2 to 14.6 years in chest girth and between 10 to 13 years in sitting height. The age of cross over between two sexes of vocational high school students was between 10.5 to 12.5 years in body height, between 10.5 to 12.5 years in body weight, between 10.5 to 12.5 years in chest girth and between 10.5 to 12.5 years in sitting height. In this periods, female group was superior to male group and after that male group was superior to female group again. The growth of vocational school students was superior to that of general school students in both sexes in terms of body height and body weight significantly. 2) Physical growth and nutritional indices In all cases of relative body weight, relative chest girth and relative sitting height, it was found to be increasing thereafter with advancing ages. In cases of $R{\"{o}}hrer$ index and Kaup index, it was found to be reaching to normal state thereafter with advancing ages. In each case of Vervaeck and Pelidisi index, it was found to be increasing and reaching to normal state thereafter with advancing ages. 3) Total body fat by vital measuring method Average values of body surface area, body volume and body density are measured indirectly by using the body height and body weight as Table 12, 13 and 14. The rate of body fat weight of general high school students was from minimum $11.96{\pm}3.53%(3.33{\pm}1.10kg$) to maximum $18.25{\pm}6.46%(9.08{\pm}2.01kg$) in male and from $25.88{\pm}3.62%(7.96{\pm}0.78kg$) to $43.00{\pm}7.22%(12.91{\pm}1.21kg$) in female. The rate of body fat weight of vocational high school students was from minimum $11.20{\pm}2.88%(3.32{\pm}1.13kg$) to maximum $17.16{\pm}5.88(10.83{\pm}3.16kg$) in male and from minimum $25.11{\pm}2.26%(7.91{\pm}0.89kg$) to maximum $42.16{\pm}7.96%(13.22{\pm}1.75kg$) in female.

  • This study investigated the correlation of physique factor( standing height, body weight, chest girth, body surface ) and vital capacity upon records of swimming discipline at sea water. The subjects are 194 sophomore students of Korea Maritime University who participated in the swimming discipline. The swimming records were divided into three groups - higher, middle and lower group. The results from this investigation are as follow ; 1. The standing height was above the average on the A, B+ record, body weight was above on the A+, A record, and vital capacity was above on the A+, A, B+, C record respectively. 2. The standing height, body weight, chest girth, body surface, vital capacity was significantly correlated between record P < 0.05 and P < 0.01. Therefore the higher record group has better physique factor and vital capacity than the middle or lower record group. 3. The standing higher of the higher record group was significantly correlated with body weight(0.514), body surface(0.768) and vital capacity(0.427), and body weight was significantly correlated with chest girth(0.525), body surface(0.940) and vital capacity. This standing heiht of the middle record group was sigificantly correlated with body weight(0.509) and body surface(0.779), and body weight was significantly orrelated with chest grith(0.618) and body surface(0.927). The standing height of the lower record group was significantly correlated with body weight(0.595), chest grith(0.363), body surface(0.802) and vital capacity(0.250), and body weight was significantly correlated with chest grith(0.678) and body surface(0.952).

  • The age of maximum growth increments-the adolescent spurt-is not only of developmental interest but is used as a marker for timing other growth events. And the mandibular growth rate follows the general growth curve, it is essential for an orthodontist to take the current and exact information about physical growth of patients. The author measured and studied the body height and weight of 11,694 children living in Seoul, and calculated out the mean, standard deviation, coefficient value, annual increments, percentage increments of each value, and made diagram to compare it with others. 1. The growth curve shows linear increment tendency until 17 years of age in male, 15 years in female. 2. The annual increment curves of body height and weight reveals the most peak value in 14-16 years in male and 11-14 years in female. 3. During 11-14 years of age, female growth exceed the male growth in the body height growth. And in weight growth, female growth exceed the male growth during 6-7 years and 11-12 years to show twice crossing. 4. It seemed that until 11-12 years in male and until 9-10 years in female the height growth show the priority to weight growth. And from 17 years in male and 15 years in female the body growth reveals the balanced growth pattern. 5. The time of changes of standard deviation curves of body height and weight coincided with that of annual increments. 6. The prominent high value of body height and weight in the comparison with other data may be due to the secioeconomical and nutritional, environmental influence. 7. The growth accerlation phenomena was detectable.

  • In this paper, a springboard for diving is analysed to find out how much force a diver should apply to reach specific height when the diver jumps. The springboard is presumed to Co-rotational plane cantilever beam(CR-beam), so EDISON program related to Co-rotational framework is used. The force of the person is supposed to sine function and the demanded height is fixed. Same velocity makes same height regardless of diver's weight. So, the velocity of springboard when the feet of a diver are separated from the springboard is a main factor of the analysis. The result shows that there is no association between deformation and weight and also between velocity and weight. That is, the required force to reach a optimal height is fixed whatever the diver's weight is.

  • The exact estimation of physical growth by Obesity level has important meaning to the health care and evaluation on adolescent girls. So this study tried to clear the relationship between weight and body fat by using data for the height, weight of 124 elementary school children and high school student in Seoul. Then this study tried to show the physical growth pattern and various characteristics by Obesity level by using longitudinal for the height, weight of 1113 high school students in Seoul, and it also tried to show what influencing factors on the physical growth of this aged population. The result could be summarized as follows. 1. The relationship between weight and body fat(%) has 0.81475(r) at age 9 and 0.69361(r) at age 18. Also the relationship between weight and lean body muscle(LBM %) has -0.81470(r) at age 9 and -0.64729(r) at age 18. 2. The weakness, normal and obesity groups were classified by Obesity level. In case of weakness group showed the very low Obesity level at age 8 to 11, in case of obesity group showed the high Obesity level at age 15 to 18. Also Rohrer index was decreasing tendency up to age 12 in weakness group and increasing tendency over age 14 in obesity group. 3. When the height and weight growth pattern was compared, height growth was superior to weight growth at age 9 to 14.5 in normal group. But weight growth was inferior to height growth at age 9 to 14.5 in normal group. In obesity group, weight growth was superior to height growth at age 7 to 18. On the other hand the height growth of weakness group was superior to the normal group and the obesity group except age 11 to 12. 4. On height velocity curve by PHV age obesity group showed the most growth amount per year(9.00Cm/yr), and the next is normal group(8.77Cm/yr), weakness group(8.70Cm/yr). Then the difference between PHV age and PWV age was within 1 year in these three groups. 5. In these three groups, height velocity curve by menarcheal age showed the PHV before 2~3 years of menarcheal age. And weight velocity curve by menarcheal age showed the remarkable PWV before 1 year of menarcheal age.
