  • In order to assess the reliability of a building energy simulation program (TRNSYS) from the standpoint of user, a set of verification experiment and calculation of cooling load for a test space is carried out. This work is a complement of the previous study that dealt with heating load for the same space. The test space is kept airtight to eliminate the source of uncertainties in modeling. A window-mounted, on/off controlled air-conditioner is used for cooling, whose performance has been established a priori. The calculation encompasses two models for evaluating cooling load in TRNSYS: energy rate control and temperature level control. Comparison of the total cooling loads obtained from different sets of experimental data enables to validate the measurements. The experimental result shows that the latent load is fairly large even in the absence of apparent air change in the space, which needs to be clarified. Each of hourly and daily accumulated sensible loads is compared between the experiment and two calculation models. Despite an inconsistency associated with solar irradiation, both of the models agree favorably with the experiment within a tolerance, illustrating their capability of properly predicting space thermal loads.

  • We present observational evidence of the surface homogeneity on Phaethon based on the time-series multi-band photometry and spectrometry. The observations of Phaethon were conducted in Nov.-Dec. 2017. We confirmed that Phaethon is a B-type asteroid, as was previously known, and its rotational color variation was not detected. During our observation period, the sub-solar latitude of this asteroid was approximately $55^{\circ}S$, corresponding to the southern hemisphere of the body. Thus, we found that the southern hemisphere of Phaethon has a homogeneous surface from our observation results. In addition, we compared our spectra with archival data to investigate the latitudinal surface properties of the asteroid. The result showed that it doesn't have a latitudinal color variation. To verify this assumption, we investigated its solar-radiation heating effect, and the result suggested that this asteroid underwent a uniform thermal metamorphism regardless of latitude, which is consistent with our observations. Based on this result, we discuss the homogeneity of the surface of the body.

  • In this study, the actual energy consumption of the secondary side District Heating System (DHS) with different hot water supply temperature control methods is compared. The two methods are Outdoor Temperature Reset Control and Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control. While Outdoor Temperature Reset Control has been widely used for energy savings of the secondary side system, the results show that the Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control method saves more energy. In general, the Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control method lowers the supply temperature of hot water, and it reduces standby losses and increases the overall heat transfer value of heated spaces due to more flow into the space. During actual energy consumption monitoring, the Outdoor Temperature predictive Control method saves about 6.6% of energy when compared to the Outdoor Temperature Reset Control method. Also, it is found that at partial load condition, such as during daytime, the fluctuation of hot water supply temperature with Outdoor Temperature Reset Control is more severe than that with Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control. Thus, it proves that Outdoor Temperature Predictive Control is more stable even at partial load conditions.

  • Thermo-acoustic waves can be generated in a compressible fluid by rapid heating and cooling near the boundary walls. These phenomena are very important mechanism of heat transfer in the space environment in which natural convection does not exist. In this study, the generation and transmission characteristics of thermo-acoustic waves in an air filled enclosure with rapid wall heating are studied numerically. The governing equations were discretized using control volume method, and were solved using PISO algorithm and second-order upwind scheme. For the stable solution time step were considered as t=1$\times$$10^{-9}$ order, and grids are 50$\times$800. The induced thermo-acoustic wave propagates through the fluid until it decays due to viscous and heat dissipation. The wave showed sharp front shape and decreased with long tail.

  • Energy balance equations Were developed to describe the heat transfer mechanisms in a double layer plastic greenhouse with a water curtain system. Heat transfer variables were determined by using various temperature data measured in a conventional prototype semicircular cross-section greenhouse over a range of water temperatures and water flow rates. The heat transfer coefficient between flowing water and greenhouse air was independent of water flow rates. But the heat transfer coefficient between water surface and the stagnant air space within the double plastic layer was dependent on water flow rates. Substituting the heat transfer coefficients, determined from the energy balance equations in the heat transfer equations, demonstrated various relationships among ambient air temperature, greenhouse air temperature, water temperature, and water flow rates. The heating benefits were linearly related to not only the inside and outside air temperatures but also to the water temperature. The energy conservation effects of the water curtain system were found even initial water temperatures were considerably lower than the greenhouse setting temperatures. Sensitivity analysis for heat transfer coefficients demonstrated that the heat transfer coefficient between greenhouse air and the stagnant air within the plastic layers was the most significant coefficient in the estimation of heating effects.

  • This work is aimed at estimating the effects of various factors on the energy consumption of Korean-style apartment houses using TRNSYS. The factors considered here include the nominal size of floor area, type of remodeling, azimuth, sidewall insulation, and window type. Based on some assumptions, an actual apartment house is simplified into a model that is used for thermal load calculations. The simplified model is validated by showing a good agreement with the actual one in the predicted result. Remodeling balconies into unconditioned buffer spaces yields a favorable thermal performance in comparison with the original type regardless of the nominal size. Incorporating balconies into a conditioned indoor space leads to sharp increases in thermal loads, which must be avoided in view of energy conservation as well as structural problem. A quantitative assessment on the azimuthal effect indicates that the heating energy can be saved up to 16% by taking the south or southeast direction. Reduction in the heating load with enhancing the sidewall insulation is gradual, so that a cost-effectiveness analysis may be needed when amending the regulations concerned. Glazing appears to significantly affect the heat transfer through window. A typical case illustrates that the heating load is decreased about 25% by simply adopting triple glazing instead of double glazing.

  • Radiative, heating is suitable for outdoor heating system in windy and cold seasons. Optimal design of the reflector is very important to maximize heat transfer to a specific target area in the open space. The geometrical optical theory can be applied to analyze efficiency of the reflector. Commercial ray tracing computer programs are available only for limited geometries of the reflector. Alternatively, it may be designed and analyzed through an approximated simple lens theory. Two types of reflectors are analyzed using either of these methods. The key issue in this paper is to propose a new illumination experimental method for determination of the radiative efficiency. Optical light source and illuminometer are employed. The calculated efficiency of the reflector is compared with experimental one for checking the reliability. The relative errors between the experimental and analytical results are less than 5%, which proves the validity of this method. Based on these methodologies, a practical reflector and heating lamp unit is developed.

  • The major threats that human being is facing nowadays are the Climate change, depletion of the fossil fuels at a rapid rate and energy costs. A significant portion of world energy consumption is consumed by domestic heating and cooling. And heat pumps, due to their higher utilization efficiencies as compared to conventional heating and cooling systems, offer an attractive solution to this problem. Among the types of heat pumps, the Geothermal heat pump or Ground-source heat pump is a highly efficient, renewable energy technology for space heating and cooling. The Ground-source heat pump uses the Earth as a heat sink in the summer and a heat source in the winter. And the Earth, having a relatively constant temperature, warmer than the air in winter and cooler than the air in summer, offers an excellent heat source in winter and heat sink in summer.. This paper will discuss an overview of the types of heat pumps, its operation, benefits of using geothermal heat pumps, soil characteristics, and overview of some experimental works. Finally it will briefly discuss the opportunity of using these energy efficient systems (EES) in the HVAC market of South Korea.

  • As 'Low Carbon Green Building' is highly required, programs to evaluate building performance are actively and commonly used. For most of these programs, dynamic responses of buildings against external weather changes are very important. In order to simulate the programs, weather data of each region must be properly entered to estimate accurate amount of building energy consumption. To this end, the existing weather data and weather data of KSES were compared and analyzed to find out how weather changes. Energy load of Korea's standard houses was also analyzed based on this data. As a result, data corresponding to June ${\sim}$ September when cooling is supplied shows 23% of average increase with 30% of peak increase(June). On the other hand, data corresponding to November ${\sim}$ February when heating is supplied shows 29% of average decrease with 34% of peak decrease(November). Increase in cooling load and decrease in heating load in the above data comparison/analysis show that KSES 2009 data reflects increase in average temperature caused by global warming unlike the existing data. Increase in dry-bulb temperature depending on weather change of standard houses increases cooling load by 17% and decreases heating load by 36%
