  • The present study investigated the effects of experimental parameters on the thermal characteristics of an in-line 6x1 array of discrete heat sources for a test multichip module using water, PF-5060 and paraffin slurry. The parameters were heat flux of 10-40W/$cm^2$. Reynolds number of 3,000~20,000 and mass fraction up to 10% for paraffin slurry The size of paraffin slurry was within 10~40$\mu$m before and after experiments. The local heat transfer coefficients for the paraffin slurry were larger than those for water. Thermally fully developed conditions were observed after the third or fourth row (five or seven times of the chip length) and the paraffin slurry showed effective cooling performance at the high heat flux The paraffin slurry with the mass fraction of 5% showed the most efficient cooling performance when the heat transfer and the pressure drop in the test section are considered simultaneously. The experimental data at the fourth and sixth rows are best agreed with the values predicted by the Malina and Sparrow`s correlation among other correlations, and the empirical correlations for water and 5% paraffin slurry were obtained at the first and sixth rows when the channel Reynolds number is over 3,000.

  • This paper numerically investigates thermo-flow characteristics of offset strip fins to obtain a correlation of heat transfer and pressure drop. The flow is divided into three regimes, i.e. laminar, transition and turbulent. The predicted j and f values from the SST k-w turbulence model agree with previous correlations with the error less than 20% in transition and turbulent regimes. Prandtl number is varied from 0.5 to 40 and a correlation to predict heat transfer and pressure drop for offset strip fins is suggested.

  • This paper performed experimental research in order to measure boiling heat transfer coefficient of water in microchannel with hydraulic diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Tests were conducted within the ranges of heat fluxes from 100 to 400 kW/$m^2$, vapor qualities from 0 to 0.2, and mass fluxes of 200, 400, and 600 kg/$m^2s$. From the experimental results, it was found that flow boiling heat transfer coefficient is not dependent on mass flux or vapor quality, but instead on heat flux to a certain degree. The measured data of heat transfer are compared to a few available correlations proposed for mini-channels. Among them, Sun and Mishima's correlation is found to predict the present data well, within the mean absolute error of 17.84%.

  • The present paper dealt with an experimental study of boiling heat transfer characteristics of $CO_2$. Heat transfer coefficients of the refrigerant flow inside horizontal smooth microchannel were obtained with inner tube diameter of 0.3mm and length of 300mm. The direct electric heating method was applied for supplying the heat uniformly to the refrigerant. The experiments were conducted with $CO_2$ purity of 99.99%, at saturation temperature of $10^{\circ}C$, mass flux ranges of $300{\sim}900\;kg/m^2s$, and heat flux ranges of $15{\sim}45\;kW/m^2$. While heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of heat flux in the low quality region, the heat transfer coefficient decreased with the increase of quality in the high quality region. The heat transfer coefficients were compared with seven existing correlations with the Gungor-Winterton's(1986) correlation gave the best prediction. A new corelation to predict the two-phase flow heat transfer coefficient was developed based on the Chen(1966) correlation. The new correlation predicted the experimental data well with a mean deviation of 9.69% and average deviation of -3.03%.

  • This paper is to provide analysis model that can be used to investigate the improvement in energy efficiency for cooling tower by using fresh air. Numerical analysis of Air-cooled heat exchanger for single-phase flow with variations of outdoor air temperature has been performed. A complete set of correlations of the heat transfer in both refrigerant and air sides was employed for predicting the heat transfer rate. The numerical results derived from the correlations were verified with experimental results. The energy consumption for a hybrid cooling tower has been compared for variation of a outdoor air temperature. The results showed that the hybrid cooling tower in low outdoor temperature offers a significant improvement in energy efficiency. The thermal analysis aids significantly in the solution of the design problem of hybrid cooling tower.

  • Two-phase flow boiling heat transfer of R-410A in horizontal small tubes was reported in the present experimental study. The local heat transfer coefficients were obtained over a heat flux range of 5 to 40 kW/$m^2$, a mass flux range of 170 to 600 kg/$m^2s$, a saturation temperature range of 3 to $10^{\circ}C$, and quality up to 1.0. The test section was made of stainless steel tubes with inner diameters of 0.5 and 3.0 mm, and lengths of 330 and 3000 mm, respectively. The section was heated uniformly by applying a direct electric current to the tubes. The effects on heat transfer of mass flux, heat flux, inner tube diameter, and saturation temperature were presented. The experimental heat transfer coefficient is compared with six existing heat transfer coefficient correlations. A new boiling heat transfer coefficient correlation based on the superposition model for R-410A in small tubes was developed with mean deviation of 10.13%.

  • This study concerns the performance of the condensing heat transfer performance of two-phase closed thermosyphons with plain copper tube and tubes having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal micro grooves. Distilled water, methanol, ethanol have been used as the working fluid. The numbers of grooves and operating temperature have been investigated as the experimental parameters. Condensing heat transfer coefficients and heat flux are obtained from experimental data for each case of specific parameter. The experimental results are assessed and compared with existing correlations. The results show that working fluids, numbers of grooves are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. The working fluid with high latent heat such as water has a good heat transfer rate compared to methanol and ethanol. The relatively high rate of heat transfer is achieved when the thermosyphon with internal micro grooves is used compared to that with plain tube. Condensing heat transfer coefficient of grooved thermosyphon is 1.5∼2 times higher in methanol and 1.3∼l.5 times higher in ethanol compared to plain tube. The best condensation heat transfer performance is obtained for 60 grooves, and the maximum value of this case is 2.5 times higher than that of the plain tube.

  • Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.

  • An experiment was performed to study heat transfer characteristics between corrugated heat exchanger and flat plate type one. While heat capacity(13.86kW) was provided constantly and the flow speed was varied from 2.8 to 17.9m/s, The temperature and the pressure drop were measured. Furthermore, Heat transfer coefficient, Colburn factor and Nusselt number were calculated using them. With increase of the flow speed for both exchangers, the coefficient and the pressure drop increased, but Colburn factor decreased. The coefficient, pressure drop and Colburn factor of the corrugated type were all higher than those of the flat one, which is due to the flow interruption with recirculation and reattachment of the corrugated type. The empirical correlations of Nusselt number were suggested for the tested two heat exchangers.

  • An experimental study of steam condensation on a subcooled thick water layer (0.018 ~0.032 m) in a countercurrent stratified flow has been performed using a nearly horizontal circular pipe. A total of 103 average interfacial condensation heat transfer coefficients were obtained and parametric effects of steam and water flow rates and the degree of subcooling on condensation heat transfer were examined. The measured local temperature and velocity distributions in the thick water layer revealed that there was a thermal stratification due to the lack of full turbulent thermal mixing in the lower region of the water layer Two empirical Nusselt number correlations, one in terms of average steam and water Reynolds numbers, and the water Prandtl number, and the other in terms of the Jakob number in place of the Prandtl number, which agree with most of the data within $\pm$ 25%, were developed based on the bulk flow properties. Comparisons of the present data with existing correlations showed that the present data were significantly lower than the values predicted by existing correlations.
