  • Natural convection heat transfer rates in a vertical pipe were measured for $Gr_H$ number from 2.1x$10^6$ to 1.2x$10^9$. Using the analogy concept, heat transfer experiments were replaced by mass transfer experiments. A cupric acid - copper sulfate ($H_2SO_4-CuSO_4$) electroplating system was adopted as the mass transfer system and the mass transfer rates were measured. Comparison of the results with the existing laminar and turbulent natural convection heat transfer correlations on a vertical plate showed very good agreements except for the high $Gr_H$ case, where the boundary layer inside the vertical pipe interferes. The agreements showed the usefulness of the analogy experiment method. Using 3 different anode size and 6 different geometrical configurations, the effects of the anode size and position were explored. As expected, the anode size and position do not affect the limiting currents for most cases. These results will be used as the experimental background for the positioning and sizing of the anodes for a more complex experiment.

  • Rayleigh-Benard natural convection experiments were carried out as the preliminary experiment to simulate the natural convection of the core melt at the severe accident conditions. This work focused on the influences of plate separation distance(s), the existence of the side walls and crust geometries of upper and lower plates. Based upon the analogy concept, a cupric acid-copper sulfate electroplating system($H_2SO_4-CuSO_4$) was employed as the mass transfer system and measurements were made for $Ra_s$ ranging from $1.06{\times}10^7$ to $2.91{\times}10^{10}$. The test results measured for a single horizontal plate were in good agreement with the correlation reported by McAdams and those for two horizontal plates showed the similar trend to the existing Rayleigh-Benard heat transfer correlations developed by Dropkin and Somerscales, Globe and Dropkin. The measured heat transfer rate decreased with the increasing separation distance between the two plates and became similar to those for a single horizontal plate. Fin arrays mounted on both upper and lower plates enhanced the heat transfer rates. For all cases, the heat transfer rates measured for open side walls are higher than those for closed ones.

  • An experimental study to investigate the condensing heat transfer characteristics of small diameter horizontal double pipe heat exchangers with R-22 and R-410A was performed. Experimental facility was constructed to calculate and observe HTC(heat transfer coefficients), flow patterns and pressure drop. The main components include a liquid pump, an evaporator, a condenser(test section), a sight-glass, pressure taps and measurement apparatus. Two pipes of different diameters are tested; One 5.35 mm ID 0.5 mm thick, the other 3.36 mm ID 0.7 mm thick. The mass flow rate ranged from 200 to $500\;ks/m^2{\cdot}s$ and heating capacity were form 1.0 to 2.4 kW. The flow patterns of R-22 and R-410A were observed with a high speed camera through the sight-glass. The tests revealed that HTC of R-410A was higher than that of R-22 by maximum 5%. Annular pattern was observed for the most cases but stratified flow was also detected when x<0.2. The pressure drop in 3.36 mm ID pipe was higher than that of 5.35 mm by $30{\sim}50%$. Comparing with previous correlations such as Shah, Fujii and Soliman's, Fujii' showed the best good agreement with my data with a maximum deviation of 40%.

  • Natural convection cooling of discrete heaters located in a two-dimensional vertical open top cavity is investigated experimentally. The five discrete heaters with same heat generation are located on the wall of the cavity. The heaters are arranged in two configurations; flush-mounted on a vertical wall and protruding from the wall about 4.5 mm. The materials used for the vertical walls are copper and epoxy-resin, and air is used as the cooling fluid. The temperature and flow fields in the cavity were visualized by means of Mach-Zehnder interferometer and smoke-method. Also, local temperature measurements are made along the vertical wall. Results are obtained for cavity aspect ratios of 4.6, 7.5 and 9.5 and modified Rayleigh numbers ranging from 10$^{3}$ to 10$^{6}$ . Results indicate that the cooling efficiency for the copper wall is superior to that of the epoxy-resin. For the epoxy-resin wall, the protrusion of the heaters plays a role in decreasing the heat transfer performance. The location of maximum temperature is significantly influenced by the wall materials and heater configurations. Correlations relating the Nusselt number to the modified Rayleigh number are proposed.

  • Heat transfer coefficients on a single spiral coil tube in the furan foundry sand fluidized bed have been investigated. Heat transfer coefficients(ho) to an immersed single spiral coil tube were measured in the bed. The bed diameter was 0.21 m. The following quantities were varied: (l)bed temperature, (2)mean particle diameter, (3) fluidization rate, (4)the ratio of heated coil tube pitch to diameter(p/Do), and (5)the ratio of heated coil tube pitch to mean particle diameter(p/dp). In addition, the experimental values of maximum Nusselts number were compared with the values of maximum Nusselts number predicted by the existing correlations. The values of heat transfer coefficient increase with the increase in bed temperature and fluidization rate, but decrease with increase in particle diameter. An empirical formulus of maximum Nusselts number which is applicable in the furan foundry sand fluidization bed is as follows: $$Nu_{max}=1.01\;Re^{0.48}Prg^{0.4}(p/dp)^{0.28}(p/Do)^{0.05}$$.

  • We investigate the heat-transfer and pressure-drop characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers with a copper plate or copper spiral fins. Twenty-four samples with different fin pitches and tube rows were tested. For both configurations, the effect of the fin pitch on the j factor is negligible, and the f factor increases with the fin pitch. The effect of the tube row depends on the configuration. For plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers, the j factor decreases as the row number increases; the reverse is true for spiral exchangers. We explain this by considering the flow pattern. The j factor for plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers is larger than that for spiral exchangers, and the difference decreases as the row number increases. The f factor of the plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger is also larger. We compare our results with existing predictions of correlations.

  • Currently, vertical closed ground heat exchangers are the most widely utilized geothermal heat pump systems and the major influencing parameters on the performance of ground heat exchangers are the ground thermal conductivity(k) and borehole thermal resistance($R_b$). In this study, the borehole thermal resistance was calculated from the in-situ thermal response test data and the individual effects of design parameters (flow rate, number of pipe, grout composition) on the borehole thermal resistance were analyzed. The grout thermal resistance was also compared with the correlations in the literatures. The borehole thermal resistance of the investigated ground heat exchanger results in 0.1303 W/m.K and the grout thermal resistance (66.6% of borehole thermal resistance) is the most influencing parameter on borehole heat transfer compared to the other design parameters (pipe thermal resistance, 31.5% and convective thermal resistance, 1.9%). In addition, increasing the thermal conductivity of grout by adding silica sand to Bentonite is more effective than the other design improvements, such as an increase in circulating flowrate or number of tubes on enhancing borehole heat transfer.

  • Generally, the temperature drop under $0^{\circ}C$ on vaporizer surface creates frozen dews. This problem seems to increase as the time progress and humidity rises. In addition, the frozen dews create frost deposition. Consequently, heat transfer on vaporizer decreases because frost deposition causes adiabatic condition. Therefore, it is very important to solve this problem. This paper aims to study of the optimum design of used vaporizer at local LNG station. In this paper, experimental results were compared with numerical results. Geometries of numerical and experimental vaporizers were identical. Studied parameters of vaporizer are angle between two fins $(\Phi)$ and fin thickness $(TH_F)$. Numerical analysis results were presented through the correlations between the ice layer thickness $(TH_{ICE})$ on the vaporizer surface to the temperature distribution of inside vaporizer $(T_{IN})$, fin thickness $(TH_F)$, and angle between two fins $(\Phi)$. Numerical result shows good agreement with experimental outcome. Finally, the correlations for optimum design of vaporizer are proposed on this paper.

  • In this study, the general thermal and flow characteristics of flat tube with micro-channels has been studied and the correlation of Nusselt number and friction factor is proposed. The optimal flat tube geometry is determined by optimal design process. It is assumed to be a three dimensional laminar flow in the analysis of thermal and flow characteristics. The periodic boundary condition is applied since the geometry of flat tube with micro-channels shows uniform cross-section in primary flow direction. Local Nusselt number is examined for thermal characteristics of each membrane, and module average Nusselt number and friction factor are calculated to determine the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop in overall flat tube with microchannels. The correlations between Nusselt number and friction factor are given by Reynolds number, aspect ratio of membranes, and the width of flat tube. ALM (Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier) method is applied to the correlations to determine an optimal shape of flat tube. It is shown that the optimal aspect ratio of flat tube is approximately 1.0, irrespective of the width of flat tube and Reynolds number.

  • This paper presents the results of a theoretical study of the effect of radiation during free convective laminar film boiling for methanol/water binary mixtures on an isothermal vertical wall at atmospheric pressure. With the well-known boundary layer theory as a basis, a theoretical model has been formulated into consideration for mass diffusion at liquid phase. The equations are numerically solved by a similarity method to investigate the effects of radiation emissivity on the surface with various parameters such as wall superheat and composition of more volatile component at liquid phase far from the wall. From the results, the distributions of the physical quantifies are investigated in both phases. New correlations are proposed to predict the heat transfer coefficient of binary mixtures. It is shown that the proposed correlations are in good agreement with numerical results and with Bromley's correlation within maximum $11\%$ errors. It is also found that as the wall superheat is increased, radiation effect becomes more important.
