The reactor cavity cooling system (RCCS) is a passive reactor safety system commonly present in the designs of High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactors (HTGR) that removes heat from the reactor pressure vessel by means of natural convection and radiation. It is one of the factors responsible for ensuring that the reactor does not melt down under any plausible accident scenario. For the simulation of accident scenarios, which are transient phenomena unfolding over a span of up to several days, intermediate fidelity methods and system codes must be employed to limit the models' execution time. These models can quantify radiation heat transfer well, but heat transfer caused by natural convection must be quantified with the use of correlations for the heat transfer coefficient. It is difficult to obtain reliable correlations for HTGR RCCS heat transfer coefficients experimentally due to such a system's size. They could, however, be obtained from high-fidelity steady-state simulations of RCCSs. The Rayleigh number in RCCSs is too high for using a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) technique; thus, a Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach must be employed. There are many RANS models, each performing best under different geometry and fluid flow conditions. To find the most suitable one for simulating an RCCS, the RANS models need to be validated. This work benchmarks various RANS models against three experiments performed on the HTTR RCCS Mockup by the Japanese Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) in 1993. This facility is a 1/6 scale model of a vessel cooling system (VCS) for the High Temperature Engineering Test Reactor (HTTR), which is operated by JAEA. Multiple RANS models were evaluated on a simplified 2d-axisymmetric geometry. They were found to reproduce the experimental temperature profiles with errors of up to 22% for the lowest temperature benchmark and 15% for the higher temperature benchmarks. The results highlight that the pragmatic turbulence models need to be validated for high Rayleigh natural convection-driven flows and improved accordingly, more publicly available experimental data of RCCS resembling experiments is needed and indicate that a 2d-axisymmetric geometry approximation is likely insufficient to capture all the relevant phenomena in RCCS simulations.

A numerical analysis is carried out to study the two-dimensional steady state natural convection from vertical wires immersed in cold pure water. The surface of the wire is $0^{\circ}C$ unifrom temperature. Results of the analysis are presented for free stream temperature from $0^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ and the aspect ratio N from $5.26{\times}10^{-3}$ to $1.0{\times}10^{-3}$. The effects of the density extremum and aspect ratio on the flow pattern and the heat transfer characteristics are discussed As the aspect ratio N becomes larger, in the range of $1.0^{\circ}C{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}4.4^{\circ}C$ and $6{^{\circ}C}{\leq}T_{\infty}{\leq}17^{\circ}C$, the effect of Pr number on the heat transfer is shown to be more significant than the aspect ratio. Investigating into the effect of the density extremum on the heat transfer from wires, the new heat transfer correlations are suggested with the relation of average Nu mumber vs. modified Ra number. Here, the coefficient values C of correlations are presented as the function of density extremum parameter $R^*$. The effects of the density extremum parameter are also discussed.

The performance experiments for a microchannel printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) of high-performance and high-efficiency on the two technologies of micro photo-etching and diffusion bonding were performed in this study. The microchannel PCHE were experimentally investigated for Reynolds number in ranges of 100 $\sim$ 700 under various flow conditions in the hot side and the cold side. The inlet temperatures of the hot side were conducted in range of $40^{\circ}C\;{\sim}\;50^{\circ}C$ while that of the cold-side were fixed at $20^{\circ}C$. In the flow pattern, the counter flow was provided 6.8% and 10 $\sim$ 15% higher average heat transfer rate and heat transfer performance than the parallel flow, respectively. The average heat transfer rate, heat transfer performance and pressure drop increases with increasing Reynolds number in all the experiment. The increasing of inlet temperature in the experiment range has not an effect on the heat transfer performance while the pressure drop decrease slightly with that of inlet temperature. The experimental correlations to the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop factor as a function of the Reynolds number have been suggested for the microchannel PCHE.
The effects of top and bottom lids on the natural convection heat transfer phenomena inside vertical cylinders were investigated experimentally for $Ra_{Lw}$ from $9.26{\times}10^9$ to $7.74{\times}10^{12}$. Using the concept of analogy between heat and mass transfer, a cupric acid-copper sulfate electroplating system was employed as mass transfer experiments replacing heat transfer experiments. The natural convection heat transfer of both-open cylinders in laminar and turbulent flows was in good agreement with the existing heat transfer correlations developed for vertical plates. The effects of top and bottom lids on the heat transfer rates were very similar to the studies of Krysa et al. and Sedahmed et al. and Chung et al. With the copper lids, the bottom-closed cavity showed the highest heat transfer rates and then followed both-closed, top-closed, both-open ones in both laminar and turbulent flows. However with the acryl lids, the similar trends were observed except that the heat transfer rates for both-open were higher than top-closed one. The use of the copper lids increased the heat transfer rates compared to the acryl lids due to the hydrodynamic interaction of the flows developed for the different heated faces. This study extended the ranges of flow conditions of the existing literatures and proposed the empirical correlations.

In this paper, evaporating heat transfer characteristics in the refrigeration and air-conditioning facilities were studied using the environmentally friendly refrigerants R-1270 (Propylene). R-290 (Propane). R-600a (Iso-butane) and HCFC refrigerant R-22 The test tube was surrounded by an annulus with water flowing counter to the refrigerant. The tube is copper. with an outside diameter of 12.7mm and the wall thickness of 1.315mm. The test results showed that the local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were superior to that of R-22 and the maximum increasing rate of heat transfer coefficient was found in R-1270. The average evaporating heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass velocity and it showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22 Comparing the heat transfer coefficient of experimental results with that of other correlations. the presented results had agood agreement with the Kandlikar's correlation. This results form the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.
In this study, the characteristics of internal flow and the heat transfer performance of dimpled plate heat exchanger were numerically investigated. For the numerical analysis, conjugate heat transfer method between cold fluid - plate - hot fluid was studied with appropriate boundary conditions. Velocity magnitude, temperature and pressure distribution were obtained from the simulation. Correlations for fanning f-factor and Colburn j-factor were obtained from numerical results and compared to the experimented data.

Experimental measurements of the heat flux to a upward impinging water jet on high heated test surface were obtained in the transition and film boiling regimes. Test variables were nozzle outlet velocity, subcooled water temperature and height of supplementary water. Boiling curve of this investigation is similar to a pool boiling curve, but it has one or two cap-shaped peaks in the transition regime. In the film boiling regime, the heat transfer rates are increased along with the increment of nozzle outlet velocity and subcooled temperature. There is optimum height of supplementary water for the augmentation of heat transfer Generalized correlations of boiling heat transfer are presented for maximum heat flux, minimum heat flux and $q_c$ at each supplementary height.

An experimental study was carried out to measure the heat transfer coefficient in flow boiling to deionized water in a microchannel having a hydraulic diameter of $500{\mu}m$. Tests were performed in the ranges of heat fluxes from 100 to 400 kW/$m^2$, vapor qualities from 0 to 0.2 and mass fluxes of 200, 400 and 600 kg/$m^2s$. From the experimental results, it is found that the measured heat transfer coefficients is independent of mass flux and quality, and is somewhat dependent of heat flux. Measured data of heat transfer are compared to a few available correlations proposed for macroscale. The previous correlations for macroscale overpredicted the flow boiling heat transfer coefficient for the test conditions considered in this work.
The study focuses on the heat transfer performance of two-phase closed thermosyphons with plain copper tube and tubes having 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 internal grooves. Three different working fluids(distilled water, methanol, ethanol) are used with various volumetric liquid fill charge ratio from 10 to 40%. Additional experimental parameters such as operating temperature and inclination angle of zero to 90 degrees are used for the comparison of heat transfer performance of the thermosyphon. Condensation and boiling heat transfer coefficients, heat flux are obtained using experimental data for each case of specific parameter. The experimental results are assessed and compared with existing correlations. The results show that working fluids, liquid fill charge ratio, number of grooves and inclination angle are very important factors for the operation of thermosyphons. The relatively high rate of heat transfer is achieved when the thermosyphon with internal grooves is used compared to that with plain tube. The optimum liquid fill charge ratio for the best heat transfer performance lies between 25% and 30%. The range of the optimum inclination angle for this study is 20$^{\circ}$~30$^{\circ}$ from the horizontal position.
In this study, heat transfer and Pressure drop characteristics for R-718 in the plate and shell heat exchanger (P&SHE) investigated experimentally. The plates are circular and welded into a stack which fits into a cylindrical shell in P&SHE. Although apparently very different from rectangular the compact brazed plate heat exchanger (CBE), the underlying flow passage structure through the P&SHE is the same as in the CBE. The R-718 between plate side and shell side was performed a counterflow heat exchange. Heat transfer characteristic of R-718 were measured for turbulent flow in P&SHE by using wilson plot technique. Heat transfer experiment Ivas performed in the $200{\leq}Re{\leq}500$ regime and Pressure drop experiment was performed in the $150{\leq}Re{\leq}1600$ regime. The purpose of this study is to investigate heat transfer and friction factor correlations for R-718 in P&SHE and to offer fundamental data for experiment
