  • This study was undertaken to observe the formation behavior of ferro- magnetic phase in Mn-Al-Cu Alloys. The alloy selected for this investigation was 70% Mn-29% Al-1% Cu. This pre-allyed pig was prepared to the cylinderical castings using an Induction furnace after homogenizing at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2hr, the specimens were cooled by cooling methods. Subwequent isothermal heat treatments were followed at $550^{\circ}C$ for various periods of time at predetermined(1-1000min). The formation behavior of ferromagnetic phase was investigated by measurements of magnetic properties of the specimens at each stage of heat treatment, and optical microscopic esamination and X-Ray diffraction analyses were also employed. By this basic experimental results, the conclusions are as follows 1) In order to obtain much amount of ferromagnetic phase, the optimum average cooling rate was about 7.35-$16.4^{\circ}C$/sec($1100^{\circ}C$-$600^{\circ}C$). 2) We verified the decomposition of {\tau} phase to {\beta} -Mn and {\gamma} , as the specimens were homogenized at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 12hr, then heat-treased at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1-1000min. 3) A condition of optimum heat treatments in Mn-Al-Cu permanent mag-netic alloys showed that after homogenizing at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2hr, the speciments were cooled in air or furnace(A) and subsequent heat treatments at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1-30min. The maximum magnetic properties were measured as follows: Air cooling; Br=1200(Gause), bHc=100(oe), (BH)max=0.07(MGOe) Furnace cooling(A);Br=950(Gauss), bhe=80(Oe), (BH)max=0.05(MGOe)

  • The energy pile, used for both structural foundations and heat exchangers, brings about heat exchange with the ground formation by circulating a working fluid for heating and cooling buildings. As heat exchange occurs in the energy pile, thermal stress and strain is generated in the pile body and surrounding ground formation. In order to investigate the thermo-mechanical behavior of an energy pile, a comprehensive experimental program was conducted, monitoring the thermal stress of a cast-in place energy pile equipped with five pairs of U-type heat exchanger pipes. The heating and cooling simulation both continued for 30 days. The thermal strain in the longitudinal direction of the energy pile was monitored for a 15 operation days and another 15 days monitoring followed, without the application of heat exchange. In addition, a finite element model was developed to simulate the thermo-mechanical behavior of the energy pile. A non-linear contact model was adopted to interpret the interaction at the pile-soil interface, and thermal-induced structure mechanics was considered to handle the thermo-mechanical coupled multi-field problem.

  • For efficient use of solar energy in plastic greenhouse, thermal storage system was developed. The system was constructed with the counter-flow type air-water heat exchanger using a thin polyethylene film as a medium of heat exchange parts. Experiments were carried out to investigate the heat exchange rate, optimum water flow rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, and the effectiveness of the counter-flow type air-water heat exchanger with polyethylene film bags. Mathematical model to predict air temperature leaving heat exchanger was developed. The results obtained in the present study are summarized as follows. 1. Heat exchange rate in the counter-flow type air-water heat exchanger with polyethylene film bags was compared to that of polyethylene film. Heat exchange rate was almost identical at air velocity of 0.5m/s on polyethylene film surface. But, heat exchange rate of heat exchanger with polyethylene film bag was $32{\sim}55KJ/m^2$ hr higher than that of polyethylene film at air velocity of 1.0m/s. 2. Considering the formation of uniform water film and the sufficient heat exchange rate of polyethylene film bags, optimum water flow rate in polyethylene film bags was $3.0{\sim}6.0{\ell}/m^2$ min. 3. The overall heat transfer coefficient of polyethylene film bags was found to be $35.0{\sim}130.0KJ/m^2\;hr\;^{\circ}C$ corresponding to the air velocity ranging 0.5 to 4.0 m/s on polyethylene film surface. And the overall heat transfer coefficient showed almost linearly increasing tendency to the variation of air velocity. 4. Mathematical model to predict air temperature leaving the heat exchanger was developed, resulting in a good agreement between the experimental and predicted values. But, the experimental results were a little lower than predicted. 5. Effectiveness of heat exchanger for the experiment was found to be 0.40~0.81 corresponding to the number of transfer units due to the variation of air velocity ranging 0.6 to 1.7 m/s.

  • Polycrystalline CdTe thin film has been studied for photovoltaic application due to the 1.45 eV band gap energy ideal for solar energy conversion and high absorption coefficient. The formation of low resistance contact to p-CdTe is difficult because of large work function(>5.5eV). Common methods for ohmic contact to p-CdTe are to form a p+ region under the contact by in-diffusion of contact material to reduce the barrier height and modify a p-CdTe surface layer using chemical treatment. In this study, the surface chemical treatment of p CdTe was carried out by H$\_$3/PO$\_$4/+HNO$\_$3/ or K$\_$2/Cr$\_$2/O$\_$7/+H$\_$2/SO$\_$4/ solution to provide a Te-rich surface. And various thin film contact materials such as Cu, Au, and Cu/Au were deposited by E-beam evaporation to form ohmic contact to p-CdTe. After the metallization, post annealing was performed by oven heat treatment at 150.deg. C or by RTA(Rapid Thermal Annealing) at 250-350.deg. C. Surface chemical treatments of p-CdTe thin film improved metal/p-CdTe interface properties and post heat treatment resulted in low contact resistivity to p-CdTe.Of the various contact metal, Cu/Au and Cu show low contact resistance after oven and RTA post-heat treatments, respectively.

  • It was observed that exchange bias field was increased with smooth surface and better ${\gamma}$-FeMn formation. Sputtering conditions were varied for the control of the surface roughness and ${\gamma}$-FeMn formation. From the results of Cu deposition as underlayer, it was found that ${\gamma}$-FeMn formation was closely related with the thickness of underlayer. After heat treatment, exchange bias field was increased over three times. This improvement was likely that the crystallites of ${\gamma}$-FeMn were well formed. In Co/Cu/Co/FeMn spin valve structure, magnetoresistance was increased over 1.4 times through the heat treatment. This was due to the disappearance of Co/Cu intermixed dead layer and removal of defect, and this was examined by AES analysis.

  • This work is concerned with the formation behavior of PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) films on Al6082 alloy under the application of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) in an alkaline solution. Arc initiation voltage became much lower by the application of AC than DC, and arc initiation time became shorter under DC than AC. The number of pores present in the PEO films was much larger than that on the surface, irrespective of DC and AC. It was also found that the number of pores in the PEO films formed under AC was more than that under DC and the size of pores is smaller under AC than DC. During the formation of PEO films, a lot of heat was generated and solution temperature increased more rapidly under DC than under AC which is attributed to high PEO film formation voltage under DC than AC.

  • Fusion bonding of cast iron and Al alloy is an effective way to improve the properties such as low inertia, high efficiency and corrosion resistance in machinery parts. In case of fusion bonding, intermetallic compound layers are formed at the interface between cast iron and Al alloy interface. It is important to control the intermetallic compound layers for improving bonding strength. The formation behavior of intermetallic compound layer by heat treatment has been investigated. Heat treatment was performed at temperature from $600^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$ with $100^{\circ}C$ interval for an hour to investigate the phase transformation during heat treatment. Heat treated specimens were analyzed by using FE-SEM, EPMA and EDS. The EPMA/WDS results revealed that various phases were formed at the interface, which exhibited 4 distinct intermetallic compound layers such as ${\tau}_6-Al_{4.5}FeSi$, ${\tau}_2-Al_3FeSi$, ${\tau}_{11}-Al_5Fe_2Si $and ${\eta}-Al_5Fe_2$. Also, fine precipitation of ${\tau}_1-Al_2Fe_3Si_3$ phase was formed between ${\tau}_{11}$ and ${\eta}$ layer. The phase fraction in intermetallic compound layer was changed by heat treatment temperature. At $600^{\circ}C$, intermetallic compound layer of ${\tau}_6$ phase was mainly formed with increasing heat treatment time. With increasing heat treatment temperature to $800^{\circ}C$, however, ${\tau}_2$ phase was mainly distributed in intermetallic compound layer. ${\tau}_1$ phase was remarkably decreased with increasing heat treatment time and temperature.
