The needs for advanced sensor technologies in risk assessment of civil infrastructures

  • Civil infrastructures are always subjected to various types of hazard and deterioration. These conditions require systematic efforts to assess the exposure and vulnerability of infrastructure, as well as producing strategic countermeasures to reduce the risks. This paper describes the needs for and concept of advanced sensor technologies for risk assessment of civil infrastructure in Japan. Backgrounds of the infrastructure problems such as natural disasters, difficult environment, limited resource for maintenance, and increasing requirement for safety are discussed. The paper presents a concept of risk assessment, which is defined as a combination of hazard and structural vulnerability assessment. An overview of current practices and research activities toward implementing the concept is presented. This includes implementation of structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for environment and natural disaster prevention, improvement of stock management, and prevention of structural failure.

  • Seismic risk management of the built environment is integrated by two main stages, the assessment and the remedial measures to attain its reduction, representing both stages a complex task. The seismic risk of a certain structure located in a seismic zone is determined by the conjunct of the seismic hazard and its structural vulnerability. The hazard level mainly depends on the proximity of the site to a seismic source. On the other hand, the ground shaking depends on the seismic source, geology and topography of the site, but definitely on the inherent earthquake characteristics. Seismic hazard characterization of a site under study is suggested to be estimated by a combination of studies with the history of earthquakes. In this Paper, the most important methods of seismic vulnerability evaluation of buildings and their application are described. The selection of the most suitable method depends on different factors such as number of buildings, importance, available data and aim of the study. These approaches are classified in empirical, analytical, experimental and hybrid. For obtaining more reliable results, it is recommends applying a hybrid approach, which consists of a combination between methods depending on the case. Finally, a recommended approach depending on the building importance and aim of the study is described.

Probabilistic seismic hazard assessment of Sanandaj, Iran

  • In this paper, the peak horizontal ground acceleration over the bedrock (PGA) is calculated by a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA). For this reason, at first, all the occurred earthquakes in a radius of 200 km of Sanandaj city have been gathered. After elimination of the aftershocks and foreshocks, the main earthquakes were taken into consideration to calculate the seismic parameters (SP) by Kijko (2000) method. The seismotectonic model of the considered region and the seismic sources of the region have been modeled. In this research, Sanandaj and its vicinity has been meshed as an 8 (vertical lines) * 10 (horizontal lines) and the PGA is calculated for each point of the mesh using the logic tree method and the five attenuation relationships (AR) with different weighted coefficient. These calculations have been performed by the Poisson distribution of four hazard levels. Then by using it, four regional maps of the seismic hazard regions have been provided for Sanandaj and its vicinity. The results show that the maximum and minimum value of PGA for the return periods of 75, 225, 475, 2475 years are (0.114, 0.074) (0.157, 0.101), (0.189, 0.121) and (0.266, 0.170), respectively.

Multivariate assessment of the occurrence of compound Hazards at the pan-Asian region

  • Compound hazards (CHs) are two or more extreme climate events combined which occur simultaneously in the same region at the same time. Compared to individual hazards, the combination of hazards that cause CHs can result in greater economic losses and deaths. While several extreme climate events have been recorded across Asia for the past decades, many studies have only focused on a single hazard. In this study, we assess the spatiotemporal pattern of dry compound hazards which includes drought, heatwave, fire and wind across Asia for the last 42 years (1980-2021) using the historical data from ERA5 Reanalysis dataset. We utilize a daily spatial data of each climate event to assess the occurrence of such compound hazards on a daily basis. Heatwave, fire and wind hazard occurrences are analyzed using daily percentile-based thresholds while a pre-defined threshold for SPI is applied for drought occurrence. Then, the occurrence of each type of compound hazard is taken from overlapping the map of daily occurrences of a single hazard. Lastly, a multivariate assessment are conducted to quantify the occurrence frequency, hotspots and trends of each type of compound hazard across Asia. By conducting a multivariate analysis of the occurrence of these compound hazards, we identify the relationships and interactions in dry compound hazards including droughts, heatwaves, fires, and winds, ultimately leading to better-informed decisions and strategies in the natural risk management.

지반침하 피해도 분석을 위한 GIS 활용에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Application of GIS for Analysis of Subsidence Hazard)

  • Subsidence hazard has never been considered seriously until recent yews in Korea, although its socioeconomic impact on Korea becomes more and more enormous. There have been a few studies for the application of GIS analysis technique to the prediction of subsidence hazard. For GIS analysis, several factors, which are represented by coverage, are considered and selected for building a GIS model. Numerical method was used to quantify the importance of each factor in GIS model and the result from numerical modeling using FLAC was compared with that from previous research based on empirical methods. Analysis in 3-D needs more computer resources (i.e. memory). Therefore that in 2.5-D was considered to overcome the problem. Not only maximum vertical subsidence but also maximum horizontal strain and maximum slope have been considered for the assessment of subsidence hazard. The model can be easily modified for the purpose of applications in any subsidence area, especially cavern or abandoned mines under thick soil layer.

자동차 기능안전성을 위한 온톨로지 기반의 위험원 분석 및 위험 평가 (An Ontology-Based Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment for automotive functional safety)

  • 본 논문에서는 자동차 기능안전 표준인 ISO 26262에서 요구하는 위험원 분석 및 위험 평가에서 온톨로지와 추론 규칙을 적용하는 방법을 제안한다. 위험원 분석 및 위험 평가는 일반적으로 수작업으로 수행되어 많은 노력이 소요되고 오류가 발생하기 쉬우며 일관성과 정확성이 부족한 문제점이 있다. 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해서 본 논문에서는 위험원을 온톨로지로 표현하고, 평가를 위한 온톨로지 규칙을 정의하여 자동화하고 일관성 및 정확성 문제를 개선한다. 본 제안 방법을 검증하기 위해서 ESCL(electronic steering column lock) 시스템에 적용하였다. 온톨로지 규칙 적용 결과를 DL(Description Logics) Query를 실행하여 제대로 동작하는지 확인하였으며, 이를 통해 위험 평가 시에 발생할 수 있는 오류를 파악할 수 있었다.

  • To manage State Safety Program (SSP) in a more integrative and proactive manner, an aviation safety authority of the state shall detect and assess the risk of emerging or hidden safety hazards before they provoke accidents or incidents(ICAO, 2018). In case of South Korea, safety risk assessment is conducted by calculating the likelihood and severity of the hazard following ICAO's safety management manual. It is reasonable to extract the safety risk likelihood by calculating the number of occurrence caused by the hazard. However, it is ambiguous to assess the safety risk severity defined as the extent of harm that might be expected to occur as a consequence of the identified hazard. In this paper, a safety risk assessment method which quantitatively calculates the risk of hazard using aviation safety data(i.e. aviation safety mandatory report, etc.) is proposed. By utilizing the proposed method, the existing process that safety risk is being subjectively assessed by safety inspectors can be supplemented. So that essential aviation safety policy decision making can be accomplished by the accurate result of safety risk assessment.

석회암 지역 재해 등급도 작성 및 응용에 관한 사례 연구 (A Case Study for Construction Hazard Zonation Maps and its Application)

  • We presents an hazard zonation mapping technique in karst terrain and its assessment. From the detailed engineering geological mapping. Controlling factors of sink hole and limestone cave formation were discussed and 4 main hazard factors affecting hazard potential are identified as follows: prerequisite hazard factor(distributions of pre-existing sink holes and cavities), geomorphological hazard factors(slope gradient, vegetation, and drainage pattern etc.) geological hazard factors(lithology, fracture patterns and geological structures etc.) and hydraulic conditions(hydraulic head, annual fluctuation of ground water table and composition of g/w water). From the construction of hazard zonation map along the Jecheon-Maepo area, and vertical cross-sectional hazard zonations specific tunnel site we suggest hazard zonation rating systems.
