The purpose of this study was to investigate the curing effect of visible light through tooth substance, 0.5mm, 1.0mm thickness of enamel and dentin were prepared. Experimental specimen were made by Bisfil M & Silux packing into cylindrical brass mold 6.0mm in diameter, 2.0mm and 3.0mm, in height. All specimen were irradiated by visible light (Grip type) model No. SDL-50 Shofu Co.) for 30 seconds through tooth substance. Experimental groups were classified into enamel group (group 1) and dentin group (group 2) according to the thickness of tooth materials and then were divided into 2 subgroups (0.5mm group and 1.0mm group). In experimental groups, visible light irradiated to the specimen through either 0.5mm in thick or 1.0mm in think of tooth material. In Control group specimen were prepared by direct irradiation on the specimen surface of visible light without through tooth substance. The hardness was measured with a Barcol hardness tester (Barber-Colman Co. U.S.A.) for each prepared specimen. The results were as follows: 1. In control group, there were higher hardness values than those of in experimental group. 2. In experimental groups, 0.5mm groups had higher hardness values than 1.0mm groups did. 3. The hardness value at top surface of the specimen were higher than the hardness of bottom surface in each group. 4. Bisfil M had higher hardness values than Silux. 5. In all specimen of 3.0mm height polymerization effect was not occurred at bottom surface except Bisfil M in control group.
Copper electroplating has been applied to various fields such as decorative plating and through-hole plating. Technical realization of high strength copper preplating for wear-resistant tools and molds in addition to these applications is the aim of this work. Brighters and levelers, such as MPSA, Gelatin, Thiourea, PEG and JGB, were added in copper sulfate electrolyte, and the effects of these organic additives on the hardness were evaluated. All additives in this work were effective in increasing the hardness of copper electrodeposits. Thiourea increased the hardness up to 350 VHN, and was the most effective accelarator in sulfate electrolyte. It was shown from the X-ray diffraction analysis that preferred orientation changed from (200) to (111) with increasing concentration of organic additives. Crystallite size decreased with increasing concentration of additive. Hardness was increased with decreasing crystallite size, and this result is consistent with Hall-Petch relationship, and it was apparent that the hardening of copper electrodeposits results from the grain refining effect.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of the lipid and collagen content and drip volume on the hardness of fish meat. Red sea bream (cultured and wild) and flounder (cultured, cultured with obosan and wild) were used for this study. Textural differences between cultured and wild meats were determined by the measurements of hardness, lipid and collagen content, and drip volume. Lipid content of the dorsal muscle was higher especially in cultured red sea bream (3.32%) than in wild one. Cultured and wild flounder contained lower content of lipid than red sea bream. The content of collagen was higher in cultured flounder fed with obosan (8.37 mg/g muscle) and wild flounder (8.02 mg/g muscle) than others. Drip volume was the highest in cultured flounder fed with obosan (8.67%). The hardness of raw meat was correlated with the contents of lipid (r= -0.7063) and collagen (r= 0.8307), significantly. Cultured fish contained more lipid and less collagen than wild one. So, the hardness of these fish meats was lower than wild one. However, cultured flounder fed with obosan showed no difference in hardness compared with wild one. In the cooked meat, there was no relationship between the hardness of fish meat and the contents of lipid and collagen. But, the drip volume was significantly related with the hardness (r= 0.6870). From these results, the factors contributing the textural difference between wild and cultured fish meat would be the lipid and collagen contents, and two ways to improve the texture of cultured fish meat could be suggested. One is to lower the lipid content by feed control, and the other is to raise the collagen content by inducing more fish movement.
In this work, a new hardening model is proposed for the depth-dependent hardness of ion-irradiated polycrystals with obvious grain size effect. Dominant hardening mechanisms are addressed in the model, including the contribution of dislocations, irradiation-induced defects and grain boundaries. Two versions of the hardening model are compared, including the linear and square superposition models. A succinct parameter calibration method is modified to parametrize the models based on experimentally obtained hardness vs. indentation depth curves. It is noticed that both models can well characterize the experimental data of unirradiated polycrystals; whereas, the square superposition model performs better for ion-irradiated materials, therefore, the square superposition model is recommended. In addition, the new model separates the grain size effect from the dislocation hardening contribution, which makes the physical meaning of fitted parameters more rational when compared with existing hardness analysis models.

The mechanical properties such as shear strength and the hardness of milli-size products that manufactured for various process parameters by forward extrusion using square dies are investigated. Shear strength test is implemented for the observation of relation between vickers hardness and shear strength in the interface of head and shaft part of a stepped pin. When the extrusion ratios of pure aluminum and pure copper billets increase, the hardness on both the surface and the center line of a pin also increase, especially the hardness on the surface is shown to be a little higher than on the center. The existence of knock-out pad in extrusion die caused hardness increase in the interface of a extruded pin. As compared shear strength with hardness of a pin, the approximated linear relations are suggested in this study.

Hardness and internal stress are very important in nickel electroforming. Nickel sulfamate bath has been widely used in electroforming because of its low internal stress and moderate hardness. Nickel sulfamate bath without chloride was chosen to investigated the effect of plating variable such as temperature, PH, current density and sodium naphthalene trisulfonate as addition agent on the hardness and internal stress. It was found that hardness increased with increasing temperature and decreasing current density and ranged from 150∼310 DPH. The hardness was highest at $55^{\circ}C$ and 10∼40 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The internal stress increased with increasing current density and decreasing temperature. It was minimum at PH 3.0∼3.8. Low internal stress within $\pm$1,500 psi was obtained at both $50^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ in 10-20 mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The addition of sodium naphthalene trisulfonate was found to be effective in refine columnar grains thus resulted in decreasing internal stress, increasing hardness and improving brightness.

The study examines hardness pattern of SH737-2Cu-.9C samples transient liquid phase sintered at different temperatures viz. $1120^{\circ}C$, $1180^{\circ}C$ and $1250^{\circ}C$, heat treated by various methods and then tempered at different temperatures. Sintered samples were characterized for density and densification parameter, and austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$, subsequently cooled by four different methods viz. annealing, normalizing, oil and brine quenching. Hardness pattern was found minimum for air cooled and maximum for brine quenched, and samples sintered at $1250^{\circ}C$ had relatively higher hardness. The O.Q and B.Q samples were then tempered at $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$. Hardness pattern typically showed secondary hardness taking place, with maximum around $600^{\circ}C$.
This study was investigated to know the effect of subzero treatment in austempered ductile cast iron. Retained austenite transformed to martensite by subzero treatment. With decreasing subzero treatment temperature, more volume fraction of retained austenite transformed to martensite and transformed to martensite above 30% by subzero treatment temperature at $-196^{\circ}C$. With decreasing subzero treatment temperature, the value of strength and hardness increased but the value of elongation and impact value decreased. In case of subzero treatment at $-196^{\circ}C$, hardness value increased about 18% and impact value decreased by above 20%. We could find that subzero treated specimens had a little of effect on the tensile properties but had very much effect on the hardness and value of the impact.
Thin film coatings are commonly exploited to minimize wear and optimize the frictional behavior of various precision mechanical systems. The enhancement of thin film durability is directly related to the performance maximization of the system. Therefore, a fine approach to analyze the thin film wear behavior is required. Archard's equation is a representative and well-developed law that defines the wear coefficient, which is the probability of creating wear particles. A ploughing model is a commonly used model to determine the friction force during the abrasive contact. The equations demonstrate that the friction force and wear coefficient are inversely proportional to the hardness of the material. In this study, Archard's equation and ploughing models are modified with an effective hardness to minimize the gap between the experimental and numerical results. It is noted that the effective hardness is the hardness variation with respect to the penetration depth owing to the substrate effect. The nanoindentation method is utilized to characterize the effective hardness of Cu film. The wear coefficient value considering the effective hardness is more than three times higher than that without considering the effective hardness. The friction force predicted with the effective hardness agreed better with the results obtained directly from the friction force detecting sensor. This outcome is expected to improve the accuracy of friction and wear amount predictions.

In case of the slowly disintegrating tablets such as enzyme preparations, disintegration time (DT) may be the important factor in formulating those preparations. The effects of tablet hardness, lubricants and disintegrants on DT were investigated in this approach. Disintegration time was significantly affected by disintegrants, moderately by lubricants, but not by tablet hardness. The effect was in the order of magnesium stearate >talc, PEG, sodium benzoate in case of lubricants, and of Ac-Di-Sol>LHPC>Primogel >Kollidon in case of disintegrants. Because lubricants and disintegrants influenced the tablet hardness and DT profile showed complicated pattern, it should be remembered that all factors mentioned above should be simultaneously considered in the formulation of enzyme tablets.
