The AE measurement is one of the most convenient methods for detecting contacts between the slider and the disk. The AE method has been widely used in the investigation of the tribology of sliding interfaces due to its convenience. We examined the relationship between the AE signal and the flying height of a slider. We investigated the influence of the disk linear velocity on the AE rms signal by using the AE measurement system. The experiment also gives the relationship between the take-off velocity and the disk surface conditions. To investigate the behavior of the slider further, the variances of the AE signals are analyzed. The experimental results indicate that the increase in the magnitude of the AE rms signal does not necessarily mean the slider/disk contacts.

The HDD (hard disk drive) using Load/Unload (L/UL) technology includes the benefits which are increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance than those of contact-start-stop (CSS). Dynamic L/UL has been widely used in portable hard disk drive and will become the key technology for developing the small form factor hard disk drive. Main design objectives of the L/UL mechanisms are no slider-disk contact or no media damage even with contact during L/UL, and a smooth and short load and unload process. In this paper, we focus on state matrix, pitch static attitude (PSA), roll static attitude (RSA), loading/unloading contour (LC/ULC), impact force and contact. Stability of slider is mainly determined by PSA and RSA. State matrix by PSA and RSA is also important indicator. Therefore we analyze state matrix of SFF HDD suspension through the LC/ULC.

Load/Unload(L/UL) technology includes the benefits, that is, increased areal density, reduced power consumption and improved shock resistance contrary to contact start stop(CSS). It has been widely used in portable hard disk drive and will become the key technology for developing the small form factor hard disk drive. The main objectives of L/UL are no slider disk contact or no media damage. For realizing those, we must consider many design parameters in L/UL systems. In this paper, we focus on the effect of the ramp profile. We can find out the lateral velocities in L/UL process through experiments and simulations for force of voice coil motor and friction force on ramp. And then, we will gain the optimal design of ramp slope to maintain the minimum clearance of suspension dimple and slider with FE model. In special, after finding the point at which air bearing breaks and designing the ramp, we will identify the results for improving unload performance.
Particle contamination has been an ongoing problem affecting the reliability of the magnetic hard disk drives. Especially the recent use of MR head requires much tighter control of particle contamination due to thermal asperity (TA) phenomenon. In this study, the effects of slider air bearing surface design of TA reduction capability were investigated by manufacturing two types of sliders. Numerical methods were used to simulate the motion of particles in the head/media interface. Experiments were conducted to verify the results predicted by the numerical simulation. Drives were built and exposed to particle contamination using a particle injection chamber, which turned out to be a very simple and reliable particle generation method over conventional aerosol technique. Then the number of TA generated in the drives was recorded and compared. Also the contacts between slider and particles were investigated by acoustic emission study. It was found that a new ABS design, which has aerodynamic U-shaped rail and central flow passage, was beneficial in reducing the particle contamination on the slider.

As the flying height decreased, it is essential that hard disk drives perform reliable under various environmental conditions. In this paper the tribological characteristics of a head/disk interface are investigated under various temperature, relative humidity, altitude and outgas conditions. Specially, Contact-Start-Stop(CSS) tests were performed to assess the stiction, acoustic emission, slider take-off behavior, and track average amplitude(TAA). It is shown that the surface damage and head failure are accelerated by high temperature and humidity as well as low ambient pressure.

In order to analysis contact mechanism of head/ disk interface on hard disk drive, many techniques of analysis have been developed. Acoustic Emission sensor can be used for detect elastic energy of contact at head/disk interface. This work presents a good understanding of slider characteristics in frequency domain. The results show that torsional and bending mode of slider are dominant in head/disk contact.

The 'lift-off' force, defined as the minimum air bearing force, is another very important indicator of unloading performance. A large amplitude of lift-off force increases the ramp force, the unloading time, the slider oscillation and contact-possibility. To minimize 'lift-off' force we optimizes the slider and suspension using the integrated optimization frame, which automatically integrates the analysis with the optimization and effectively implements the repetitive works between them. In particular, this study is carried out the optimal design considering the process of modes tracking through the entire optimization processes. As a result, we yield the equation which can easily find a lift-off force and structural optimization for suspension.

This paper reports the design and fabrication of a micro-electro-mechanical-system(MEMS)-based electrostatic angular microactuator for a dual-stage servo. The proposed actuator employs a novel electrode pattern named "skewed electrode array(SEA)" scheme. It is shown that SEA has better linearity than a parallel plate type actuator and stronger force than a comb-drive based actuator. The moving and the fixed electrodes are arranged to make the driving force perpendicular to the rotating moment of arm. By changing the electrode overlap length, the magnitude of electrostatic force and stable displacement will be changed. In order to optimize the design, an electrostatic FE analysis was carried out and an empirical force model was established for SEA. A new assembly method which will allow the active electrodes to be located beneath the slider was developed. The active electrodes are connected by inner and outer rings lifted on the base substrate, and the inner and outer rings are connected to platform on which the slider locates. Electrostatic force between active electrodes and platform can be used for exiting out of plane modes, so this provides the possibility of the flying height control. A microactuator that can position the pico-slider over ${\pm}0.5{\mu}m$ using under 20 volts for a 2 kHz fine-tracking servo was designed and fabricated using SoG process.
