  • This thesis proposes a new scheme for the recognition of presegmented Hangul characters. The proposed approach is rather insensitive to noise and variation by applying 2 dimensional convolution to learning patterns. In this thesis, the hangul recognition neural network is implemented in the basis of this scheme and recognition rate is analyzed in boo cases of learning which are learning by binary patterns and learning by binary patterns and convoluted patterns together.

  • We have developed a simple and efficient hangul recognizing automata as a part of a graphic project. this automata accepts both English and Korean code from a Korean syllable from a stream of Korean alphabets. The automata then mates a 2 byte Hangul combination code from the recognized syllable and passes that code to the graphic system.

  • This study investigated the effect of character form on Readability of Hangul characters and words in horizonatal printing. The results were as follows. In canceling tests, (1) the speeds of charcter canceling were faster in the order of elongated from, condensed form and original form conditions, and (2) the speeds of word canceling were in the order of elongated, original and condensed form conditions. But in a reading task, The above indicates that Elongated from the best combination for horzontal Hangul printing.

  • In this paper,a cursive on-line Hangul recognition system which permits cursive writing between graphemes is presented. In general, the recognition of cursive Hangul writing has a difficulty of graheme segmentation and a complexity in matching procedure due to the increasing number of character candidates. To manage efficiently these problems,we propose a double segmentation method.Based on this segmentation,a recognition algorithm based on the line segment matching is proposed.Through the experimental result,it is show that the proposed recognition method is suitable for the cursive Hangul writings.

  • In this study of the relationship between preschoolers' visual perception and reading Hangul words, the 287 participants showed significant developmental change in visual perception between three to five years of age. The researcher developed the computer-based screening Test of Visual Perception for Reading (TVPR). Factor analysis confirmed three factors of TVPR : perception of number, direction, and form constancy. These factors correlated highly with four factors of motor-reduced visual perception of the Korean Developmental Test of Visual Perception (Moon et al. 2003). All factors of TVPR explained reading real words and pseudo words; direction and form constancy perception predicted reading low frequency letters. These findings confirm that preschoolers' skills in visual perception contribute to the reading of words in Hangul.

  • Unlike printed character, the recognition of Hand written one has various kinds of difficulties due to the existence of the huge pattern associated with the person who writes. Therefore, in general, recognition of Hand written characters requires an algorithm which takes into consideration of the individual differences. Hangul characters are basically made of straight lines and circles. They can be represented in terms of feature parameters such as the end point of the straight line, the length and the angle. Then all Hangul characters can be represented by the number of basic segments(-, /, vertical bar, O) multiplied by the feature parameters respectively. In this study we propose a method for recognizing Hand written Hangul characters in terms of fuzzy inference.

  • The Arae Hangul wordprocessor is one of the most famous software in Korea. It is very useful to linguists In that it has various systems of foreign characters and enables us to edit enough new ones freely. It has already a broad system of the IPA, which cannot be used for narrow transcription. The writer proposes here a full system of the IPA revised to 1979, which you can get from the Phonetic Society of Korea or Hangul & Computer Co., Ltd., free of charge. To use the new system of the IPA in the Arae Hangul wordprocessor, you must replace six revised files: (1) SPECIAL2.SFT, (2) SPECIAL2.PFT, (3)SPECIAL2.PFT, (4)ASCII.SFT, (5)ASCII.PFT, (6)ASCII.LFT.

  • This paper proposes a recognition system of constrained handwritten Hangul and alphanumeric characters using discrete hidden Markov models (HMM). HMM process encodes the distortion and similarity among patterns of a class through a doubly stochastic approach. Characterizing the statistical properties of characters using selected features, a recognition system can be implemented by absorbing possible variations in the form. Hangul shapes are classified into six types by fuzzy inference, and their recognition is performed based on quantized features by optimally ordering features according to their effectiveness in each class. The constrained alphanumerics recognition is also performed using the same features used in Hangul recognition. The forward-backward, Viterbi, and Baum-Welch reestimation algorithms are used for training and recognition of handwritten Hangul and alphanumeric characters. Simulation result shows that the proposed method recognizes handwritten Korean characters and alphanumerics effectively.

  • Hangul is expressed by the basic elements, twenty-four characters. Because these characters are composed of a circle and lines, Hough transform(HT), which has a powerful performance on the noise in extracting lines, is introduced. Many difficulties often occur when the original HT is used to extract strokes and it's direction, position and length from handwritten Hangul characters. Original HT has eight direction selected as samples in the transformed image should be calculated for these eight directions. In this paper, the generalized sampling rule is suggested. According to the rule, those directions which are possible to a line are the only thing to be calculated. The experoment result turned out to be higher than the method that Chen suggested in sampling rate. Anogher experiment result is done on the 1800 handwritten Hangul characters that 10 persons wrote. By feature extracting the oritinal HT and sampling HT. And as a result of six type classification, the suggested method came out higher than original HT.
