Abstract In this paper, we propose a fast algorithm to estimate the skew angle of linearly skewed document images. This paper is based on the fact that there is a blank line with uniform thickness between two adjacent text lines and the slope of the line is the same as that of the document. Firstly, we apply a dilation operation to the image to separate blank lines from text lines, and we detect center points of blank lines along the vertically sampled lines. Then we calculate the slope between neighboring center points in the same blank line. Calculated slopes for the entire image are accumulated on the histogram to display the distribution of them. Finally, the peak in the histogram is detected and estimated as the slope of the document image. In the experiments, we adopted a lot of images of various format with hand-printed or machine-printed document to verify our algorithm.

  • A spectrum-exposure rate conversion operator G(E) for a portable HPGe detector used for field environmental radiation survey was theoretically developed on the basis of a space distribution function of gamma flux emitted from a disk source and an areal efficiency of the detector. The radiation exposure rates measured using this G(E) and the portable HPGe. detector connected to a portable multichannel analyzer were compared with those measured by a 3' ${\phi}\;{\times}$3' NaI(Tl) scintillation detector with the reported G(E) and a pressurized ionization chamber. A comparison of the three results showed that the result obtained using the HPGe detector was lower than those determined using the NaI(Tl) detector and ionization chamber by 17% to 29%, The difference obtained is close to that reported in literature. The method developed here can be easily applicable to obtain a G(E) factor suitable to any detector for detecting the exposure rate of environmental gamma radiation, since the spectrum-exposure rate conversion operator can be calculated by a hand calculator.

  • Background: Surveillance and interventions of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) had mainly been targeted in intensive care units (ICUs). Central lines are increasingly used outside ICUs. Therefore, we performed a hospital-wide survey of CLABSIs to evaluate the current status and develop strategies to reduce CLBASI rates. Methods: All hospitalized patients with central venous catheters (CVCs) were screened for CLABSIs from January 2014 through December 2015 at a 1,328 bed tertiary care teaching hospital in Korea using an electronic data-collecting system. Clinical information including type of CVC was collected. CLABSI rates were calculated using the definitions of the National Health and Safety Network after excluding mucosal barrier injury laboratory-confirmed bloodstream infection (BSI). Results: A total of 154 CLABSIs were identified, of which 72 (46.8%) occurred in general wards and 82 (53.2%) in ICUs (0.81 and 2.71 per 1,000 catheter days), respectively. Nontunneled CVCs were most common (68.6%) among 70 CLABSI events diagnosed within one week of their maintenance. On the other hand, tunneled CVCs and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) were more common (60.5%) among 114 CLABSI events diagnosed more than a week after maintenance. Whereas the majority (72.2%) of CLABSIs in ICUs were associated with non-tunneled CVCs, tunneled CVCs (38.9%) and PICCs (36.8%) were more common in general wards. Conclusion: CLABSIs are less common in general wards than in ICUs, but they are more often associated with long-term indwelling catheters. Therefore, interventions to prevent CLABSIs should be tailored according to the type of ward and type of catheter.

  • The interbody fusion cage used to replace the degenerative intervertebral disc is largely composed of titanium-based biomaterials and biopolymer materials such as PEEK. Titanium is characterized by osseointergration and biocompatibility, but it is posed that the phenomenon such as subsidence can occur due to high elastic modulus versus bone. On the other hand, PEEK can control the elastic modulus in a similar to bone, but there is a problem that the osseointegration is limited. The purpose of this study was to implement titanium material's stiffness similar to that of bone by applying cellular structure, which is able to change the stiffness. For this purpose, the cellular structure A (BD, Body Diagonal Shape) and structure B (QP, Quadral Pod Shape) with porosity of 50%, 60%, 70% were proposed and the reinforcement structure was suggested for efficient strength reinforcement and the stiffness of each model was evaluated. As a result, the stiffness was reduced by 69~93% compared with Ti6Al4V ELI material, and the stiffness most similar to cortical bone is calculated with the deviation of about 12% in the BD model with 60% porosity. In this study, the interbody fusion cage made of Ti6Al4V ELI material with stiffness similar to cortical bone was implementing by applying cellular structure. Through this, it is considered that the limitation of the metal biomaterial by the high elastic modulus may be alleviated.

  • To contribute towards more accurate estimation of the virtual inertia coefficient for the horizontal vibration of ships, three dimensional correction factor $J_H$ for the added mass of finitely long elliptic prismatic bars in horizontal vibration in a free surface of an ideal fluid are calculated. In the problem formulation Dr. T. Kumai's quasi-finite length concept[1,11,12] is employed. Now that, in Dr. Kumai's work[1] for the horizontal vibration the mathematical model was a circular cylinder, the principal aim of the authors' work is to investigate the influence of the beam-draft ratio B/T on $J_H$. The numerical results of this work are shown in Fig.3 graphically, from which we may recognize that the influence of B/T on $J_H$ is remarkable as much as that of the length-draft ratio L/T(refer to Fig.1 also). In Fig.3 the curves for B/T=2.00 are of those based on Dr. Kumai's result[1]. On the other hand, the experimental data obtained by Burril et al.[9] for the horizontal vibration of finitely long prismatic bars of various cross-section shapes are compared with the theoretical added mass coefficients defined by combination of the authors' $J_H$ from Fig.3 and two dimensional coefficients $C_H$ obtained by Lewis form approximation for the corresponding sections. They are in reasonable correspondence with each other as shown in Fig.2. Finally, considering that the longitudinal profile of full-form ship's hull is well resembled to that of an elliptic cylinder and that the influences of other factors such as the sectional area coefficient and the shape of section contour itself can be well merged in the two dimensional added mass coefficient, the authors recommend that the data given in Fig.3 may be successfully adopted for the three dimensional correction factor the added mass in the horizontal vibration of hull-form ships.

  • Estimation of typical solar radiation is very important for the calculations concerning many solar applications. But solar radiation measurements are not easily available because of the expensive measuring equipment and techniques required. Accordingly, for regions where no solar radiation is measured, solar radiation need to be estimated using other meteorological data. However, currently in Korea, there is no study on how to do this. In this paper, the global radiation of the six major cities in South Korea where the global radiation is measured using comparatively simple CRM model was calculated compared and analyzed. The comparison between the original coefficient and the site-fitted coefficient for these cities are as follows. Differences between the site-fitted coefficient and the original coefficient for six cities are small. Except for Gwangju, both calculations show strong correlation. In case of Seoul, the $R^2$(coefficient of determination) were 0.747 and 0.749. In case of Busan and Daegu the figures were 0.817, 0.819 and 0.820, 0.821 respectively. For Gwangju, these were 0.618 and 0.622, Thus, the site-fitted coefficients were slightly higher for these four cities. On the other hand, Daejeon and Incheon was reported 0.773, 0.772 and 0.785, 0.783, respectively.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the influence of external scapular stabilization on the isometric strength of shoulder flexor muscle in subjects with and without scapular winging and conditions with and without external scapular stabilization. Methods: A total of 30 subjects with and without scapular winging were enrolled. Two groups were classified using clinical and diagnostic tests to divide the groups with and without scapular winging (15 with scapular winging 15 without scapular winging). The isometric strength of the shoulder flexor was measured using a tensiometer. The isometric strength was evaluated in the sitting position with and without an external scapular stabilization. The external scapular stabilization was provided with the examiner's hand to fix scapular winging during shoulder flexion. The changing value was calculated to determine the isometric strength difference between shoulder flexion with and without the external scapular stabilization in each group. The changing value between isometric strength of shoulder flexor with and without scapular winging was compared using the independent t-test. Statistical significance was set at 0.05. Results: In the group with scapular winging, the shoulder flexor isometric strength in the sitting position was greater with an external scapular stabilization than without an external scapular stabilization (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the shoulder flexor isometric strength in the subjects without scapular winging between conditions with or without an external scapular stabilization (p>0.05). Conclusion: The external scapular stabilization in the individuals with scapular winging may increase shoulder flexor isometric strength in the sitting position.

  • Objectives: The objective of this study was to estimate the distribution of the usual dietary intake of foods with respect to the probability of consumption derived from the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) of the 2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). Methods: The intake quantity and frequency of 63 food items were assessed from the 2009 KNHANES which was completed by 7,708 participants. The participants completed one or two 24-h dietary recalls and one FFQ. The usual intake distribution was estimated using the multiple source method (MSM), and the proportion of non-consumers was calculated through the usual intake distribution. This was then compared with the proportion of non-consumers from the 24-hour recall method. Results: The difference in the proportion of non-consumers ranged from 2% to 82.9%, indicating that there is a very large difference based on food groups. The food groups in which the proportion of non-consumers did not differ was composed of foods consumed daily, such as 'rice', 'cereal and barley', and 'Chinese cabbage and kimchi', or foods with distinct palatability such as 'coffee' and 'alcohol'. On the other hand, in the case of the food groups with a high difference in the proportion of non-consumers, most comprised fruits that emphasized seasonality. Conclusions: In the case of foods or food groups that are occasionally consumed, it is desirable to use 2 recalls with additional FFQ data by combining the consumption frequency and the quantity consumed.
