  • Microbialites are defined as rocks formed by microbial organisms. After their first appearance around 3.5 billion years ago, microbialites occur in various depositional environments throughout geological periods. Microbial organisms form microbialites by trapping and binding detrital sediments and/or precipitating carbonate cements, resulting in formation of various microstructures and mesostructures. Four major types of microbialites are distinguished based on their mesostructures: stromatolite, thrombolite, dendrolite, and leiolite. In the geological records, occurrences of microbialites are influenced by calcium carbonate saturation of seawater and interaction of microbialites with metazoans. Stromatolites mainly flourished during the Precambrian, and diminished as level of atmospheric carbon dioxide declined. On the other hand, thrombolites, mainly formed by calcified microbes, began to flourish from the Neoproterozoic. As metazoans diversified in the Phanerozoic, proportion of the microbialites within sedimentary record declined. Since then, microbialites only occasionally flourished during the Phanerozoic, such as shortly after mass-extinction events. In the Korean Peninsula, microbialites occur in the Neoproterozoic Sangwon System, the Early Paleozoic Joseon Supergroup, and the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup, which form different shapes according to their age and depositional environments. By performing detailed studies on these Korean microbialites, it is possible to understand how microbes affected geological records and sedimentary environments, as well as their interaction with other organisms.

  • Changes of fruiting body yield and morphology according to growing temperatures in Pleurotus strains were investigated. In this study, twelve commercial strains divided into low, medium and high temperature groups were tested. On the basis of fruiting body yield, they showed best in their own temperature properties. On the other hand, they didn't have any fixed tendency to growing temperatures on morphological characteristics. Thicknesses of pilei were best at $10^{\circ}C$, having nothing to do with strains. Lengths of stipes were increased with the progress of cultivation temperatures in five strains including 'Sambok'. The other strains showed differences on this trait. Thicknesses of stipes were decreased with the progress of cultivation temperatures in other strains excepting 'Sambok and ASI2029'. Days for harvest were extended as temperature decreased, even though the shortest days were different according to strains. Sometimes there were abnormal shapes of fruiting bodies in response to temperatures in some strains. In 'Suhan-1', white cilia fully covered onto the surface of pilei were observed macroscopically at the early stage and then disappeared or remained a little later at $10^{\circ}C$ cultivation. In 'Chunchu-2', their stipes were twisted and bent over $20^{\circ}C$ cultivation.

  • An experimental study was conducted on baseline model updating and damage estimation techniques for the health monitoring of offshore wind turbine tripod substructures. First, a procedure for substructure health monitoring was proposed. An initial baseline model for a scaled model of a tripod substructure was established. A baseline model was updated based on the natural frequencies and the mode shapes measured in the healthy state. A training pattern was then generated using the updated baseline model, and the damage was estimated by inputting the modal parameters measured in the damaged state into the trained neural network. The baseline model could be updated reasonably using the effective fixity model. The damage tests were performed, and the damage locations could be estimated reasonably. In addition, the estimated damage severity also increased as the actual damage severity increased. On the other hand, when the damage severity was relatively small, the corresponding damage location was detected, but it was more difficult to identify than the other cases. Further studies on small damage estimation and stiffness reduction quantification will be needed before the presented method can be used effectively for the health monitoring of tripod substructures.

  • Recently, to realize sound-absorbing structures, we have to insert sound-absorbing materials into wall. These shapes are taken limitations because sound-absorbing materials should be fixed. Therefore, the sound absorption is changed by environment that used the sound-absorbing materials. On the other hand, we will take same effect without sound-absorbing material, if we change the shape of wall to sound absorbing structure. If we use this sound absorbing structure, we can get benefits by removing limitation of materials. Therefore we suggest perforated plate for effective sound-absorbing structure. We confirmed the function of sound-absorption of this structure using equivalent property. Then, we found the similarity between perforated plate and resonator. Also, we verify these theories through computer simulation by FEM(Finite Element Method). Finally, we validated that perforated plate has function of sound absorption without sound-absorbing material. This perforated plate is used for sound-absorbing material of buildings and transportations such as vehicle, train etc. Also, these results could be further used basic tool for design of sound-absorption structure.

  • We present a secondary camera optimization method that helps the user exploring 3D virtual environment to precisely observe possible collisions between objects. The first role of our secondary camera is to automatically detect the area with the greatest possible collision. The second role is to show the detected area from a new angle of view that the current main camera cannot show. However, as the shapes of target objects are complex, the shape of the empty space between objects is also complex and narrow. It means that the space for the secondary camera position is highly constrained and its optimization can be very difficult. To avoid this difficulty and increase the efficiency of the optimization, we first compute a bisector surface between two target objects. Then, we limit the domain of the secondary camera's position on the bisector surface in the optimization process. To verify the utility of our method, we built a demonstration program in which the user can explore in a 3D virtual world and interact with objects by using a hand motion recognition device and conducted a user study.

  • This study selected 3D printing that is highly likely to be adopted in schools. This research was conducted in two stages: 1) proposing the learning activity framework for utilizing 3D printing in education, and 2) exploring the potential of integrating 3D printing in the school field. The '3D printing learning activity framework' proposed in this study includes four phases that are categorized according to the complexity of problem-solving processes and collaborative interaction: Step 1 as production through replication, Phase 2 as means of imaginary expression, Phase 3 as near problem-solving, and Phase 4 as expanded problem-solving. Next, we conducted the field study with 23 students in the 6th grade math class where they learned the various solid shapes and volumes through 3D printing-integrated activities. The lesson was considered as Phase 1, which is the production through replication. Overall, the results showed that the participants had positive perceptions about the efficacy of 3D printing activities, the quality of learning experience, and satisfaction. On the other hand, it was found that the usability of 3D printers and CAD program needs further improvement The contribution of this study can be found in the learning activity framework that can guide 3D printing activity design in school, and in the exploration of enhancing the connection between 3D printing activities and curricular relevance beyond simple interest toward a novel technology.

  • Excitation spectra of the 1.6 rm emission originating from $Ho^{3+}$$^{5}$ I$_{5}$ \longrightarrow$^{5}$ I$_{7}$ transition in fluoride, sulfide, and selenide glasses were measured at wavelengths around 900nm where the fluorescing $^{5}$ I$_{5}$ level is located. In specific energy range where the frequency upconversion populating $^{5}$ F$_{1}$ state happens, the excitation efficiency of the 1.6 fm emission was deteriorated in fluoride and sulfide hosts. In selenide however spectral line shapes of the excitation spectrum and the '$^{5}$ I$_{8}$ \longrightarrow$^{5}$ I$_{5}$ absorption spectrum looked seemingly identical to each other. Differences in optical nonlinearity as well as electronic band gap energy of the host glasses used are responsible for the experimental observations. On the other hand, codoping of rare earths such as Tb$^{3+}$, Dy$^{3+}$, Eu$^{3+}$, and Nd$^{3+}$ was effective in decreasint the terminating $^{5}$ I$_{7}$ level lifetime. However, at the same time, some of the codopants increased unnecessary absorption at the 1.6 $\mu$m wavelengths via their ground state absorption. Though the lifetime quenching effect of Eu$^{3+}$ was moderate, it exhibited no additional extrinsic absorption at the 1.6 $\mu$m band.EX>m band.

  • The spermiogenesis of Crocidura shantungensis were studied by electron microscope. All process of spermiogenesis was divided into 11 phases 15 steps, based on the morphological features of the nucleus and cell organelles in cytoplasm of spermatids. The spermatids in Golgi and cap phases were a spherical shape. On the other hand, at the early acrosomal phase they changed into an oval shape, and the tail was created in this phase. In maturation phase, the shapes of spermatid head were thin and longish. Until step 7 the direction of spermatids head turned toward the lumen of the seminiferous tubule. From step 8 to step 15 their heads turned toward the basal lamina. In step 12, the nucleus and acrosome shown maximal elongation. From Step 13 the nucleus of spermatids became flat, simultaneously with flat expansion of the acrosome expanded, and the visible whole lengths of spermatids were tend to be shorten. Spermatid heading which arrived to step 14 was taken the final shape. The nucleus was doing the wedge shape, and the nuclear chromatins condensed completely and homogenized. In the spermiation phase, the spermatids were gradually disconnected from the cytoplasm of the Sertoli cell. In this phase, the acrosome of the spermatids were fully shorten and flat, and the spermatozoa completed the process of heading and the tailing. Considering all the results, the spermiogenesis may be useful information to analyze the differentiation of spermatogenic cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate Ultrasonic devices in root canal enlargement, about the effects on the canal shape and on the cutting ability beyond the curvature in curved canals. 180 resin blocks with $40^{\circ}$ curvature in apical third and 16mm long canal were made of epoxy resin and smooth broaches. These blocks were devided into six groups. According to the devices (ENAC$^{(R)}$, HARMOSONIC$^{(R)}$, Sonic Air MM 3000$^{(R)}$) and files (Zipperer file, H-file, Flexofile, K-file, Sharper file), five groups were instrumented one minute with # 15 files, then the enlarged size was measured. And # 20 files were used again in the same groups, then the enlarged size was measured. In control group, the time which was taken to enlarge the canal from # 15 to # 20 by hand technique was measured. The data was analyzed statistically. Then the enlarged shapes were evaluated in six groups with the stereomicroscope and recorded in ideal and non-ideal canal shape to compare the effects of ultrasonic devices on the canal shape. Only the ideal shaped canals were used in the study whether the cutting ability beyond the curvature in curved canals was, or not. The files with whole flutes, no flutes, and flutes in apical 5mm only were used. The weight differences of pre-and post-instrumentation by Sonic Air MM 3000$^{(R)}$ for two minutes were compared. The results were as follow: 1. Intracanal instrumentation for 1 minute with ultrasonic devices using # 15 and # 20 file in curved root canal of the epoxy resin block can not reach to the next file size. 2. Sonic Air MM 3000$^{(R)}$ shows higher cutting ability than the other two devices (p=0.001), however the percentage of non-ideal canal shape was the highest. 3. Two ultrasonic devices except Sonic Air MM 3000 considered normal in ideal canal shaping ability. 4. little cutting ability was shown beyond the curvature of curved canals.

  • For the practical using of liquid spawn we carried out selection test of nutrient sources, cultural methods and cultural apparatus for liquid spawn production of oyster mushroom(ASTI 2001, ASTI 2018, ASTI 2072, ASTI 2016, ASTI 2070, ASTI 2180, ASTI 2183, ASTI 2042). The optimal temperature and pH range for mycelial growth of Pleurotus species were $25^{\circ}C\;to\;30^{\circ}C$ and 5.5 to 6.5, respectively. The effect of carbon sources, nitrogen sources and mineral salts on the mycelial growth was studied using petridish culture. Generally, the disaccharides and polysaccharides showed good effect for mycelial growth of Pleurotus species, and the polysaccharides were superior to the other classes of carbon sources for mycelial growth. For the mycelial growth of the 8 oyster mushroom stains, soybean flour was superior to the other kinds of nitrogen sources. On the other hand, addition of mineral salts did not affect, and even poor under certain mineral salts, the mycelial growth of the 8 oyster mushroom stains. The brown sugar selected out the carbon source of the agricultural medium. Also the soybean flour selected out the nitrogen source of agricultural medium. In the medium selection, we selected out agricultural optimum medium composed of brown sugar 3%, soybean flour 0.3%, potassium phosphate 0.05%, magnesium sulfate 0.05%. Under the 250 ml erlenmeyer culture, the effects of such factors as the inoculum rate, the working volume, cultural method and flask shapes on the mycelial growth were examined. The optimal inoculum rate and working volume on the mycelial growth of oyster mushroom was 2 mycelial disk (diameter 6 mm) and 100 ml, respectively. The shake flask culture was enhanced the mycelial growth than at the erlenmeyer flask. Pulp form growth of mycelium in the erlenmeyer flask culture was obtained in the culture with glass rod of length 50 mm, diameter 10 mm.
