This paper presents the fault detection and diagnosis(FDD) algorithm to enhance reliability of a longitudinal controller for an autonomous All-Terrain Vehicle(ATV). The FDD is designed to monitor and identify faults which may occur in distributed hardware used for longitudinal control, e.g., DSPs, CAN, sensors, and actuators. The proposed FDD is an integrated approach of decentralized and centralized FDD. While the former is processed in a DSP and suitable to detect faults in a single hardware, it is sensitive to noise and disturbance. On the other hand, the latter is performed via communication and it detects and diagnoses faults through analyzing concurrent performances of multiple hardware modules, but it is limited to isolate faults specifically in terms of components in the single hardware. To compensate for disadvantages of each FDD approach, two layered structure including both decentralized and centralized FDD is proposed and it allows us to make more robust fault detection and more specific fault isolation. The effectiveness of the proposed method will be validated experimentally.
This paper deals with an experimental investigation on an active vibration control of ahybrid smart structure(HSS) via an electro-rheological fluid actuator(ERFA) and a piezoelectric film actuator(PFA). Firstly, an HSS is constructed by inserting a silicone oil-based electro-rheological fluid into a hollow can- tilevered beam and perfectly bonding piezoelectric films ofn the upper and lower surfaces of the beam as an actuator and a sensor, respectively. The control scheme of the ERFA tuning stiffness and damping charac- teristics of the HSS with imposed electric fields is formulated as a function of excitation frequencies on the basis of field-dependent respnses. On the other hand, as for the control scheme of the PFA permitting control voltages to generate axial forces or bending moments for suppressing deflections of the HSS, a neuro sliding mode controller(NSC) is employed. Furthermore, an experimental implementation activating the ERFA and the PFA independently is established to carry out an active vibration control in both the transient and forced vibrations. The experimental results exhibit a superior ability of the gtbrid actuation system to tailor elastodynamic response characteristics of the HSS rather than a single class of actuator system alone.

This paper aims to compare the performance of three phase induction motor drives using Five Leg Inverter (FLI) and Three Leg Inverter (TLI) configurations. An Indirect Field Oriented Control (IFOC) method using a TLI is well established and incorporated for high performance speed drives in various industries. The FLI dual motor drive system on the other hand shows good workability in the independent control of two induction motor drives simultaneously. In this experiment, the IFOC method is utilized for both drive systems, and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) is used to generate pulses for both inverters. For the FLI, the Double Zero Sequence (DZS) Injection technique is used to generate the modulation signal. The complete experiment setup is done by using a DSpace 1103 controller board. The individual motor performances are analyzed using similar schemes, equipment setups and controller parameter values. The results show similar speed performance response capability between the single motor operation using a TLI system and the two motor operation using a FLI system based on the variable speed range either in forward or reverse operation. They also show similar load rejection abilities. However, the single motor with a TLI has a better power quality aspect such as ripple current and total harmonics distortion (THD).
We proposed the bridge type superconducting fault current limiter(SFCL) using switching operation of high-Tc superconducting(HTSC) thin film. The proposed bridge type SFCL consists of HTSC thin film, a diode bridge and a dc reactor. The controller for the operation of an interrupter is required in the conventional bridge type SFCL to prevent the continuous increase of fault current after a fault happens. On the other hand, the proposed bridge type SFCL can limit the fault current without the interrupter and the controller for its operation by the resistance generated when the gradually increased fault current exceeds HTSC thin film's critical current. We calculated the time when the gradually increased fault current started to be limited by the resistance generated in HTSC thin film after a fault happened and confirmed that it could be dependent on the amplitude of source voltage. The experimental results well agreed with the calculated ones from simulation.
In this study, an off-line automatic teaching method using vision information for robotic assembly task is proposed. Many of industrial robots are still taught and programmed by a teaching pendant. The robot is guided by a human operator to the desired application locations. These motions are recorded and are later edited, within the robotic language using in the robot controller, and played back repetitively to perform the robot task. This conventional teaching method is time-consuming and somewhat dangerous. In the proposed method, the operator teaches the desired locations on the image acquired through CCD camera mounted on the robot hand. The robotic language program is automatically generated and transferred to the robot controller. This teaching process is implemented through an off-line programming(OLP) software. The OLP is developed for the robotic assembly system used in this study. In order to transform the location on image coordinates into robot coordinates, a calibration process is established. The proposed teaching method is implemented and evaluated on the assembly system for soldering electronic parts on a circuit board. A six-axis articulated robot executes assembly task according to the off-line automatic teaching.
