  • In recent year, column member is used for square hollow section(5.H.5) and beam member is used for H-section. But 5.H.5 column has vulnerability because of low flexural stiffness between column and beam connection joints. To reinforce this vulnerability, 5.H.5 column filled with concrete and concrete slab connection compounded with H-beam is developed in many ways. In this paper, modelling of predicting behavior of various types of connections is studied using finite element method. k order to simulate the actual behavior, a three-dimensional modelling is used. A simple efficient contact algorithm with a new gap element is employed to simulate the interaction between 5.H.5 column and concrete, The modelling result$ are compared with the experimental results.

  • The H-shaped steel beam is popular due to its ease of manufacturing and connection to the column. This profile, which is used as a shallow beam, needs the high weak-axis bending stiffness and torsional stiffness to meet the overall stability. Achieving the local beam flange stability, bearing capacity, bending stiffness, and torsional requirements need a great thickness and width of the beam flange, which causes, which will cause more uneconomical structural design. So, the box-section beam is the ideal alternative. However, the current design specifications do not have design rules for the bolt-and-welded connection of the box-section beam and box-section column. The paper proposes a novel bolt-and-welded connection of the box-section beams and box-section columns based on a high-rise structural design scheme. Three connection models, BASE, WBF, and RBS, are analyzed under cyclic loading in ABAQUS software. The failure modes, hysteresis response, bearing capacity, ductility, plastic rotation angle, energy dissipation, and stiffness degradation of all models are determined and compared. Compared with the other two models, the model WBF exhibited excellent seismic performance, ductility, and plastic rotation ability. Finally, model WBF was chosen as the connection scheme used in the project design.

  • This study investigates the bearing pressure distribution and design of an H-section steel column baseplate under concentric loading. In general, the size and thickness of the baseplate are determined with the assumption that the bearing pressure of the column baseplate is distributed uniformly. When the column is loaded lightly, however, the baseplate becomes smaller andthinner and the bearing pressure of the baseplate is distributed non-uniformly. In this study, the distribution of the bearing pressure is investigated using the experimental method and the analytical method. Seven specimens of the H-section steel column baseplate were fabricated and tested. The analysis of the specimens was performed using the finite element analysis program, ANSYS. It is not appropriate to use the Limit State Design, which assumes that the bearing pressure of the baseplate is distributed uniformly, because the bearing pressure is distributed non-uniformly and is concentrated under the column sectio.

  • Recently, square hollow section (S.H.S) is frequently used for column and H-section for beam of steel building structures. The connection between S.H.S column and H-beam is found to weaken the rotational restraint of the joint. Several types of detail to overcome the problem have been suggested for the connection between concrete filled S.H.S column and concrete composited H-bean In this paper, modelling technique to monitor the behavior of the connections is proposed. Then, Drucker-Prager yield criteria is introduced to simulate yield behavior of in-fill concrete while Von-Mises was used in earlier works. Gap-elements are also introduced to simulate the interaction between S.H.S columns and the in-fill concrete as in privious papers. axial forces are applied to S.H.S columns and made to vary in intensity and eccentricity.

  • Steel columns used in steel buildings are inclined to lose their strength when exposed to severe fire conditions, so fire resistance is required in most countries to protect against loss of life and building collapses. In Korea, the fire resistance of columns can be obtained by the fire test defined in KS F 2257-1, 7. The fire resistance of a steel column should be evaluated in terms of the column's conditions, such as various section types (H-section, hollow-section), the column's length and boundary conditions, and whether it is fixed or hinged. However, fire testing of steel columns is usually conducted on one standard-sized H-section over 3,000 mm, and the result is used as the column's fire resistance. This is not a reasonable way to ensure that a building can withstand fire conditions. In this study, to evaluate the possibility of calculating the fire resistance of steel columns with material properties of high tensile strength of SS 400, both load-bearing fire tests and calculation of steel temperatures were carried out. The results of temperature calculation were very similar to those obtained by fire test.

  • Steel Reinforced Concrete (SRC) composite column has several advantage such as excellent durability, rapid construction, reduction of column section. Due to these aspect, applications of SRC columns to bridge piers are continuously increasing. For the design of relatively large SRC columns for bridge piers, it is necessary to check the current design provisions which were based on small section having higher steel ratio. In this study, seven concrete encased composite columns were fabricated and static tests were performed. Embedded steel members were a H-shape rolled beam and a partially filled steel tube. Based on the test results, the ultimate strength according to section details and local behavior were estimated. For the analysis of inelastic behavior of the SRC column, the cracked section stiffness of the columns was evaluated and compared with calculations. The stiffness of the cracked section showed that 25% of the initial value and this stiffness reduction occurred at 85% of the ultimate load in the experiments.

  • Square hollow section columns and H-section beams have recently been increasing1y used. Rigid column-beam connections cannot be made for the structural system and thus some measures to improve the rotational stiffness of connections should be developed. For this purpose, several types of connections. such as H-section beams connected to concrete-filled square hollow section columns, have been contrived and put to experiment. Since the experimental works are usually difficult and expensive. Particularly test of all the types of connections with similar behavior may not be feasible. Instead, the numerical analysis will be adopted predict the flexural stiffness of connections. In this work, FEM modeling techniques are examined and parametric analysis study has been carried out. The major parameters considered are concrete strength, thickness of steel column, magnitude and eccentricity of axial forces.

  • Traditionally, the thickness of fire protection materials of structural elements such as beam and column have been decided by fire test using the predominant steel section of $H-300{\times}300{\times}10{\times}15$ for column and $H-400{\times}200{\times}8{\times}13$ for beam in Korea. But this way of determination of fire protection thickness yields very unduly results. Because the temperature-increment rate of structural steel elements depends mainly on magnitude of their cross-areas. In general, the thicker size of cross-areas for structural elements, the lower temperature shows up. It had already proved that the fire protection thickness only depends on the size of cross-areas and the fire protection method for three-fide or four-side exposed conditions in European countries, the United State of America and so on. To demonstrate there would be differences among various cross-areas for structural elements, we conducted several fire tests with full-scale specimens of beams and columns. For the determination of critical temperature for steel section when the fire resistant performance is needed to be decided, we conducted with a loaded fire test for beam and column, respectively. The small column in 1.0 meter length and beam in 1.5 meter length were used in order to deprive the rational fire protection thickness of structural elements such as beam and column, respectively. After test, we could obtain there were significant temperature lass between higher cross-areas and lower cross-areas. The critical temperature of steel as a criterion is used 538$^{\circ}C$ for column and 593$^{\circ}C$ for beam which is from ASTM E 119 because we don't make provisions as critical temperature by elements. We could consider that the best way of determination of fire protection thickness is using the following multi-regression equation which was deprived from several fire tests using the concept of section factor, FR(column) = 0.17 +5191.49t A/Hp + 40.77t, FR(beam) = 0.25 +6899.31t A/Hp + 32.60t(where, FR means fire resistant time, t means thickness, A means cross-area and Hp means heated parameter).

  • In this study, connection of steel reinforced concrete(SRC) column and composite beam which consists of H-section and U-section members were tested under cyclic loading. An essential point of the composite beam is the structural performance of welded joint between the H-section and the U-section members. To improve the structural performance of joint of two beam members, vertical stiffeners, trapezoidal stiffeners, and top bars were used. Five full-scaled specimens were designed to study the effect of a number of parameters on cyclic performance of connections such as H-section beam size($H-500{\times}200{\times}10{\times}16$, $H-600{\times}200{\times}11{\times}17$), the presence of stiffeners and top bars, and the presence of no weld access hole(WAH) method. Based on the test results, deformation capacity of the specimens with H-500 series beam and H-600 series beam were 4% and 3% rotation angle, which is the requirement for the Special Moment Frame and Intermediate Moment Frame(IMF), respectively. Test result showed that deformation capacity of connection with stiffeners and top bars is greater than that of connection without stiffeners and top bars. Finally, energy dissipation capacity and strain profile of specimens were summarized.
