  • Personal rapid transit(PRT) systems have been highlighted in future transportation developments as a result of their potential as sustainable and eco-friendly transport solutions that provide demand-responsive mobility services. One of the most important characteristics of the personal rapid transit system(PRT) is that it can be constructed and operated at a low cost. A fundamental study on the alignment of the PRT guideway considering running stability was conducted in the present study. In addition, a parameter analysis of the major alignment design variables such as curve radius, transition curve length and cant was performed by vehicle dynamic analysis and optimum guideway alignments were proposed. The analysis results suggested that the theoretical values were satisfied and also confirmed the possibility of reducing the standard.

  • In 2013, Korea will become the world's second country to operate the urban Maglev system with the inauguration of demonstration line at Incheon International Airport. A prototype Maglev is under the test at KIMM's(Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials, Daejeon) track. This Maglev is an EMS(Electromagnetic suspension)-type vehicle of controlled $8{\pm}3mm$ air gap. The air gap between electromagnet and the guiderail in an EMS-type Maglev must be maintained within an allowable deviation by controlling the magnet. The air gap response is strongly dependent on the structural characteristics of the elevated guideway. For this reason, the interaction between the vehicle with electromagnets and the elevated guideway must be understood to ensure safe running. The purpose of this paper is to compare vibration characteristics of the vehicle on the switching system and other sections when the full weight condition of urban maglev vehicle that 26.5 tons per car(empty car weight 19 tons + passenger condition 7.5 tons), is applied. Through such results, Maglev vehicles and switching system can be established and the levitation stability can be improved.

  • Two representative types of the AGT (Automated Guideway Transit) system, which are bogie and steering types, are available for the side-guided system. Each system primarily consists of the bogie frame, suspensions, wheelsets and axles, braking system and transmission system. Among these components, the bogie frame is one of the most significant components subjected to the whole vehicle and passenger loads. This paper describes structural analyses and associated fatigue analyses for each bogie frame depending on the various loading conditions on a basis of the railway vehicle code UIC 515-4. Subsequently, comparisons are made between those two types to estimate which type is more reliable in terms of strength and fatigue. It is observed that the bogie type is a little advantageous over the steering one from the strength analysis. However, the two types are found to be in a reliable range of fatigue even though a realistic fatigue load case is further carried out. In addition, an optimal size of thickness is suggested for designs of the bogie frame.

  • In this paper, an experimental study on the aerodynamic characteristics of a variable span wing flying inside a channel guideway is accomplished using wind tunnel testing. A variable span wing with a NACA 0012 airfoil section was fabricated and actuated using a linear servo motor. The aerodynamic effects of 1) wing aspect ratio, 2) ground effect, and 3) the gap between the wingtip and the wing fence were investigated. It was found that both ground effect and wing fence gap increased lift. Also, the wing fence gap does not significantly affect drag. Therefore, it was found that a variable span mechanism can be used as an effective high lift device when flap use is limited.

  • A novel tri-mode ultraprecision positioning system for machine tools and measuring machine is proposed. The basic coarse mode uses a Twist-roller Friction Drive (abbr. TFD), and controls several tens of millimeters of the machine-table travel with nanometer order of positioning resolution. The fine mode also utilizes the TFD with a fine adjusting mechanism. The resolution of the fine mode is in the range of sub-nanometer. For realizing picometer positioning, the ultra-fine mode is executed by using an active aerostatic guideway. On the bearing surface of this active guideway, several Active Inherent Restrictors (abbr. AIRs) are embedded for controlling the table position. An AIR unit consists of a piezoelectric actuator having a through hole, one end of the hole on the bearing surface acts as an inherent restrictor. Owing to the aerostatic mechanism of the AIR, the deformation of the piezoelectric actuator in the AIR unit causes much reduced table displacement. Such motion reduction is effective for ultraprecision positioning. Current positioning resolution of the ultra-fine mode is 50pm, however the final goal of the positioning resolution is expected to be in the order of picometer.

  • The basic element of the EMS suspension is the electromagnet system, which suspends the vehicle without contact by attracting forces to the rails at the guideway. The suspension of a vehicle by attractive magnetic forces is inherently unstable and consequently it is continuously adjusted by the strength of the suspending electromagnet from rail irregularity and bending of the guideway. In order to improve reliable tracking, it needs to get feedback signals without measurement delay time. In this paper the concept of feedback control system with Kalman Filter in EMS is proposed. The input signals in the feedback control system are an air-gap and an acceleration signal. The air-gap signal with noise from the gap sensor is transformed to the filtered air-gap signal y without measurement delay time by using Kalman Filter. The filtered air-gap signal is transformed to a relative velocity and a relative acceleration signal. Then it multiplies these values by gain matrix in order to get the actuator's reference voltage value. The simulation results show that the dynamic responses of the suspension system can be improved by reducing the influence of measurement delay time of air-gap signals.

  • Various ways of automated guideway transit construction are being planned recently owing to the policies of the national government and local municipalities as well as increasing investment from the private sector. Particularly, the increase in the private investment is increasing greatly in SOC (Social Overhead Cost). This trend of promoting private sector investment must be conducted on the basis of a thorough analysis of the economic feasibility of the project from the government and construction companies in the private sector. In other words, an accurate cost analysis of initial investment cost (Construction cost), maintenance/repair cost, profit making through the operation of the concerned facilities, cost of dissolution, etc. in terms of the life cycle is very much in need. Nevertheless, the analysis of uncertainty factors and its probabilistic theory are in need of development so that they can be used in the analysis of the economic feasibility of a construction project. First of all, the actual studies on maintenance/repair cost of automated guideway transit are scarce as of yet, prohibiting an accurate computation of the cost and its economic analysis. Accordingly, this study focused on the uncertainty analysis of the economic feasibility for civil engineering structures among automated guideway transit construction projects based on the rapidly increasing investment on such structures from the private sector. For this research purpose, a cost classification system for the automated guideway transit is proposed, first of all, and the data On the cost cycle of the civil structure facilities and their unit cost are collected and analyzed. Then, the uncertainty in the cost is analyzed from the perspective of LCC. In consideration of the current status with almost no. studies on maintenance/repair of such facilities, it is expected that the cost classification system and the uncertainty analysis technique proposed in this study will greatly enhance LCC analysis and economic feasibility studies for automated guideway transit projects in the future.
