Reliability Investigation of a Pump-Turbine System at Various Operating Conditions (운전조건에 따른 펌프 터빈 시스템의 안정성 연구)

  • Pump-turbine system is widely used by the hydropower industry for stabilizing the electrical grid in the vast growing economy of most developed countries. This study only investigates the Fluid-structure Interaction (FSI) analysis of the pump-turbine system at various operating conditions. The FSI analysis can show how reliable each component of the system is by providing the engineer with a better understanding of high stress and deformation points, which could reduce the lifespan of the pump-turbine. Pump-turbine components are categorized in two parts, pressurized static parts and movable stressed parts. The fixed parts include the spiral casing, top and bottom cover, stay vane and draft tube. The movable parts include guide vanes and impeller blades. Fine hexahedral numerical grids were used for CFD calculation and fine tetrahedral grids were used for structural analysis with imported load solution mapping greater than 90 %. The maximum equivalent stress are much smaller than the material yield stress, and the maximum equivalent stress showed an increasing tendency with the varying of operating conditions from partial to excessive at both modes. In addition, the total deformation of all the operating conditions showed a small magnitude, which have quite small influence on the structural stability. It can be conjectured that this system can be safely implemented.

Flow field simulation and structural optimization design of cyclone separator based on Fluent (플루언트(Fluent) 기반의 사이클론 분리기의 유동장 시뮬레이션 및 구조 최적화 설계)

  • In recent years, China has been committed to promoting energy-saving and emission-reduction measures across various industries. In the steel production process, wet dust removal technology is widely adopted. However, the existing dust removal equipment, particularly the cyclone separator, suffers from insufficient dewatering efficiency, leading to a "rain" phenomenon during waste gas emission, which in turn causes secondary environmental pollution. The design of the guide vane wheel is crucial for enhancing the dewatering efficiency of the cyclone separator. Therefore, this study, based on fluid mechanics and flow field analysis theories, utilizes the FLUENT software to simulate and analyze the blade angle and flow area of the guide vane wheel. By combining the flow field analysis and simulation results with the specific parameters of the equipment, the structure of the cyclone separator's guide vanes was optimized and applied to actual production. Practice has proven that the optimized cyclone separator significantly improved dewatering efficiency and effectively reduced the rain phenomenon around the chimney, thereby enhancing environmental quality. The research of this project is conducive to the later application of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, big data, cloud computing, and other technologies in the 5G+ smart steel factory of the steel industry. It lays the foundation for using digital twin technology to carry out 3D modeling of the plant area, in order to facilitate the reappearance and simulation of the entire production process.

Computational Performance Prediction of Main Coolant Pump for the Integral Reactor SMART (일체형원자로 SMART 냉각재 순환펌프의 전산성능예측)

  • CFD analyses of the three-dimensional turbulent flow in the impeller and diffuser of an axial flow pump including suction and discharge parts are presented and compared with experimental data. The purpose of the current study is to validate the CFD method for the performance analysis of the main coolant pump for SMART and to investigate the effect of suction and discharge shapes on the pump performance. To generate a performance curve, not only the design point but also the off-design points were computed. The results were compared with available experimental data in terms of head generated. At the design point, the analysis accurately predicts the experimental head value. In the range of the higher flow rates, the results are also in very good agreement with the experimental data, in magnitude but also in terms of slope of variation. For lower flow rates, the results shows that the analysis considering the suction and discharge well describe the typical S-shape performance curve of the axial pump.

A Rotordynamic and Stability Analysis of Process Gas Turbo-Compressor in accordance with API 617 Standard (API 617 규격에 의거한 프로세스 가스 터보압축기의 로터다이나믹 해석 및 안정성 검토)

  • A rotordynamic and detailed stability analysis in accordance with API 617 standard were performed with a turbo-compressor, which is one of key rotating machinery in refinery, petroleum, and power plants. The system is composed of rotor shaft, impeller, sleeve hub, balance drum, and coupling hub. The rotor system is supported by tilting pad bearings, which has 5 pads and pad on loading condition. The rotordynamic analysis specified by API 617 includes the critical speed map, mode shape analysis, Campbell diagram, unbalance response analysis, and stability analysis. In particular, the specifications of stability analysis consist of a Level 1 analysis that approximates the destabilizing effects of the labyrinth seals and aerodynamic excitations, and Level 2 analysis that includes a detailed labyrinth seal aerodynamic analysis. The results of a rotordynamic analysis and stability analysis can evaluate the operating compressor health and can be utilized as a guide of its maintenance, repair and trouble solution.

Internal Flow Analysis on a Mixed Flow Pump for Developing Marine Mineral Resources (해양광물자원 개발을 위한 사류형펌프의 내부유동 해석)

  • The development of lifting pumps that lift minerals to a mining vessel are one of the vital parts of the commercial mining process. The purpose of this study is to investigate internal flow and its effect on the performance of a mixed flow pump in order to improve the pump's performance. Numerical analysis was performed by commercial code of ANSYS CFX-11 based on flow rate and length of flexible hose. The rated rotational speed of the impeller is 1750rpm. For taking into account the turbulence, k-$\omega$ SST model was selected to guarantee more accurate prediction of flow separation. The simulated results are in good agreement with the experimental results and showed that its efficiency and the head of the pump are related mainly to the flow rate and the length of flexible hose. A lesser flow rate caused more secondary flow through the guide vane passage. The length of flexible hose and flow rate exert much more influence on the pump's performance than the shape of the flexible hose.

  • Aerodynamic characteristics of the small two-stage turbo blower were investigated using commercial CFD tool(ANSYS CFX Ver. 14.5) in this paper. Turbo blower, which is a centrifugal type of turbomachinery, is used in various industries. It is used for application that required high static pressure rising at relatively small volumetric flow rate. In order to understand the mechanism of static pressure rising, the aerodynamic characteristics of the small two-stage turbo blower are analyzed at high rotating speed in this study. The k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model, which is good at prediction of adverse pressure gradient flows, was applied. The CFD results of the turbo blower are validated by performance test. The static pressure rising of the turbo blower is nonlinearly increased over the first stage and the second stage. The secondary flow occurred at guide vanes, between the casing and the first impeller shroud, and the bottom of the impeller disk. As a result, It is required that whole fluid area is analyzed to predict aerodynamic characteristics of small two-stage turbo blower. and the result should be selected with considering for error from experiment and CFD.

A study on the flow and aeroacoustic characteristics of the sirocco fan of OTR (Over The Range) (후드겸용 전자레인지 시로코홴의 유동 및 소음특성에 관한 연구)

  • Aeroacoustic characteristics of sirocco fan used in Over-The-Range (OTR) has been analyzed in this paper. A microwave hood combination over the gas range is short for the OTR. The flow phenomena of the double-sided sirocco fan was analyzed numerically and experimentally by using commercial code and three dimensional PIV for flow visualization. Also, microphone array is used in order to understand acoustic characteristics of OTR. Two dimensional unsteady flow and acoustic simulation is tried to qualitatively estimate the effects of tonal noise and broadband noise on the overall sound pressure level. It is found that tonal sound is generated from the strong interaction between the impeller and cutoff while broadband sound is generated from the strong secondary flows along the scroll surface. To reduce the noise level, the V-shape cut-off was applied to improve the sound quality by reducing tonal noise. So the peak noise at BPF (Blade Passing Frequency) was almost reduced. The shape of flow-guide to suppress the secondary flow over the scroll surface was carefully checked. It is found that this affects flow pattern at the fan exit and reduces the broad band noise. Through this numerical and experimental study, the sound pressure level was lowered by 4dBA compared to that of the previous fan at the operating point.
