An Analysis of Hand Measurements for Designing Size Specification for Children's Gloves (아동용 장갑의 치수 규격 설계를 위한 손 치수 분석)

  • Most apparel products have national standards for sizing; however, for gloves, national sizing standards have not yet been established. This study aims to analyze children's hand dimensions and propose a size specification for children's gloves that shows children's hand-related size information. Among the 3D measurements of sixth Size Korea Project, the measurement data of 19 dimensions related to the hands of 1,057 boys and girls aged 7-13 years old were analyzed. The distribution and growth trend of hand measurements for boys and girls demonstrated considerable mean differences and distribution trends by gender and age as per hand dimensions, which leads to the conclusion that it is necessary to show these results in the children's glove design. Based on these results, the cross-distribution maps of children's hand length and hand circumference were drafted; furthermore, the distribution relationship with an adult hand size was identified. Based on the distribution of hand sizes, the distribution of adult hand sizes overlapped with children's hand sizes was verified, and children's glove size specifications were presented. The results can be used as useful data such as measures for setting the size range and sizing system for children's gloves.

A Study on Dietary Attitudes of Preschool Children in Child Care Center (어린이집 아동들의 식생활 태도에 관한 연구)

  • This study aimed at examine dietary attitude, eating behavior and food preferences of children in child care center. The children involved in this study were 153 boys and 134 girls, aged 3 to 6 years old. The eating frequency of breakfast and the number of meal times a day were significant difference according to sex(P<0.01). Reason for skipping breakfast was ‘no appetite’(49.3%). It was found that 51.5% of the children belonged to ‘fair’ in food habit score, while children in ‘poor’ and in ‘excellent’ were 25.0% and 9.7% respectively. There was no significant difference in food habit score between boys and girls. Their preferred staple foods were ‘cooked rice’ and ‘Chajangmyon’, their preferred soup was ‘seaweed soup’. Also, their most preferred side dishes with animal foods were ‘fried chicken’ and ‘Bulgogi’. The preference of ‘hard boiled soybean curd’ and ‘pan fried soybean curd’ among the side dishes with vegetable foods were significant according to the obesity index(P<0.05). Children preferred side dishes with animal foods to those with vegetable foods. First considered item in meal preparation was child's favorite(58.1%). Mother's response to child's unbalanced diet was ‘trying to persuade the child’(56.6%). It was significant according to mother's occupation(P<0.01). The nutritional management program at child care center is required to enhance the nutritional status of children. Also the nutritional education for the children and their meal planners is required for better growth and health promotion of preschool children.

A Research on the Health Care and the Demand for Visiting Health Care Services for Vulnerable Children in Comparison with Non-vulnerable Children in a Region (취약계층과 일반군 영유아의 건강관리 현황 및 방문건강관리사업 요구도 비교조사)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to provide baseline data on the health care of children and the demand for visiting health care services in one region in efforts to support the implementation of visiting health care services for vulnerable children. Methods: Seventy-three children and their caregivers from the vulnerable social group and 82 children and their caregivers from the general group were selected as research participants. The data were collected through home visiting survey by professional nurses. Results: Children from the vulnerable social group were at higher risk of poor health care than the general group. Regarding home safety, vulnerable children were more likely to be exposed to unsafe conditions. With respect to nutrition, developmental play, developmental screening test, and home safety, visiting health care services were in demand for caretakers. Conclusion: These results indicate that to promote health care and safety conditions for vulnerable children, it is necessary to implement visiting health care programs that include the management of vaccination, medical check-up, growth and development, home safety, and nutrition. These findings can be used as the baseline data for the development of visiting health care programs for vulnerable children.

Food Behavior and Growth of Cerebral Palsy Children - A Study for the Development of Snack (간식 개발을 위한 뇌성마비 아동의 식품섭취 실태)

  • The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental information for snack development contributing to physical growth of children with cerebral palsy. The study was conducted on the children with cerebral palsy of age 1 to 7 by investigating their food behavior, physical growth development, nutritional status, and snack intake. As a result of assessing physical growth by WLI (Weight-Length Index), the proportions of the children with cerebral palsy were the following: underweight 45.5%, normal 45.5%, overweight 6.0%, and obesity 3.0%. The mothers of the children with cerebral palsy mainly bought milk and dairy products for their children's snacks (43.5%) as well as fruits (33.3%). They wanted development of new snacks that helped growth development (50.5%), and preferred more development of the following snacks: Korean rice cakes (47.5%), biscuits (24.2%), bread (22.3%). The result of dietary intake showed that the percentage of RI in zinc and folic acid did not reach the RI in every age categories. The proportion of subjects with less than 75% of RI was 76.8% for the zinc and folic acid, and 52.4% for the calcium and iron. These results indicate that children with cerebral palsy had slower physical development and lesser nutrition intake than normal children. Hence, this study provided the basis to develop the snack for the malnutrition state children with cerebral palsy which helped their physical development. The shape of new snack considered was a rice cake which included zinc and folic acid that were insufficient in RI in children with cerebral palsy.

  • Of all facial fractures in children, condylar fractures have the greatest propensity to produce a growth disturbance. This risk appears to be greatest when the injury is during the first 3 years of during adolescence. Yet, the ability of a child to undergo compensatory growth that decrease the effects of the injury is also the greatest. Fracture dislocation of the condyle in the preadolescent often results in excellent remodeling and function. Because of this factor and the higher risRs of avascular necrosis and ankylosis open reduction of a condylar fracture in a child is not widely recommended. This retrospective study analyzed mandibular condyle fractures in the children who admitted in dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pusan paik hospital from 1984 to 1993 clinically and radiologically.

REMODELLING AFTER CONSERVATIVE TREATMENT OF THE MANDIBULAR CONDYLAR FRACTURES IN CHILDREN (소아에서 하악과두 골절의 보존적 치료 후 골개조)

  • The management of mandibular condylar fractures in children has long been a matter of controversy. The fracture, if not treated appropriately, may result in complications such as disturbance of mandibular growth and temporomandibular joint ankylosis. They are usually treated nonsurgically, which has been proved to be satisfactory in the long term results. Nineteen children with 25 condylar fractures experienced during their growth period (age at trauma from 10 months to 12 years, mean 7.0 years) were studied. All patients were treated by arch bars and intermaxillary fixation for $7{\sim}14$ days. They have been evaluated with clinical and radiographic examination. The maximum mouth opening and lateral movement of the mandible were within normal limits. There was no malocclusion or ankylosis. Beginning of remodelling was evident at postoperative $1{\sim}3$ months. Remodelling of the condyle was good in 21, while partial adjustment occured in the other 4 condyles. These results suggest that the conservative treatment of condylar fractures in growing children results in good functional results and good remodelling of the condyle.

  • Vitamin D is an essential component of bone and mineral metabolism; its deficiency causes growth retardation and skeletal deformities in children and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults. Hypovitaminosis D (vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency) is observed not only in adults but also in infants, children, and adolescents. Previous studies suggest that sufficient serum vitamin D levels should be maintained in order to enhance normal calcification of the growth plate and bone mineralization. Moreover, emerging evidence supports an association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels and immune function, respiratory diseases, obesity, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, infection, allergy, cancers, and cardiovascular diseases in pediatric and adolescent populations. The risk factors for vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency in the pediatric population are season (winter), insufficient time spent outdoors, ethnicity (non-white), older age, more advanced stage of puberty, obesity, low milk consumption, low socioeconomic status, and female gender. It is recommended that all infants, children, and adolescents have a minimum daily intake of 400 IU ($10{\mu}g$) of vitamin D. Since the vitamin D status of the newborn is highly related to maternal vitamin D levels, optimal vitamin D levels in the mother during pregnancy should be maintained. In conclusion, given the important role of vitamin D in childhood health, more time spent in outdoor activity (for sunlight exposure) and vitamin D supplementation may be necessary for optimal health in infants, children, and adolescents.

Improved Nutritional Status of Children by Nutritional Management Programs at Child Care Centers in Korea (영유아 보육시설의 영양관리 시범 사업(II) : 영양상태 개선 효과)

  • The study was carried out to assess whether the nutritional management program by dietician at child center can affect nutritional status of children at child care center. The diet intakes were measured by mother\`s record at home and by direct weighing at child care centers, and the hight and weight of children were measured before and after nutritional management program for 3months to see the effects. The energy intakes were significantly increased 56.29 Kcal after program, and protein 3.61g, lipid 3.12 g, calcium 49.71mg, iron 0.39 mg, vitamin B$_1$ 0.084 mg, vitamin B$_2$ 0.116 mg, and vitamin C 10.10 mg, respectively, except vitamin A and niacin. the significant changes of nutrient intakes were more at higher age group compared to at the lower age group, and more at girls compared to boys, Although the significant increase fo nutrient intakes at child care center, most nutrient intakes at home were not significantly changed, except energy, lipid, iron, vitamin A. The changes at changes of fat and calcium intakes for 3 months were positively correlated to the change of Z-score for weight, and the change of A-score for weight was positively correlated to changes of Z-score for height. The results showed that the nutritional management program for 3 month at child care center can increase nutrient intakes significantly and the incresed nutrient intakes can enhance children\`s growth. Evaluation of Environmental Behavioral Characteristics of Children's Reading Room in Public Libraries (공공도서관 아동열람실의 환경행태특성평가에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined the arrangement features in public library infant and children's reading room and provide basic material in after children's reading room space planning by studying the space features, which are valued in the environment behavioral point of view. We limited the check list to libraries built after year 2000 that are located around Seoul and from 5 libraries with children reading rooms. After analyzing items by the space features, considering children's environment behavior, pleasantness was most favorable, children scale, safety, comfortableness, flexibility followed in order. It shows the basic surroundings and the furniture that composes the children's reading room are relatively favorable, but in the other hand, it seems that reading rooms lack the ability to form an environment that can adapt to children's growth, inducting new activity areas flexibly or rearrange them. there are limitations to getting the children's needs objectively and significantly, so survey research, interview research and not only studying Korean's but comparing and analyzing with foreign country's cases will be needed.

  • For the purpose of investigating the factor of foot and calf growth of primary-school children who are fast-growing during this period a group of the 1st graders of primary-school had been the subject of this measurement in 1995 and there after they became the subject again in 1997, 1999 when they were the 3th, 5th graders measurement was carried out in 30 items including status and weight and marthin-type measure and foot-print were used for this measurement as the result, stature is correlated with height items and length items of foot and calf weight is correlated with width and circumference items of foot and calf angle of the first toe showed the highest growth like 3rd graders, heel circumference had rapidly grown rather than in the part of foot circumference in the factor analysis df foot measurement of 10-year, the first, second factors, appeared the size of shoes, in case of 12-year the first factor with status appeared the size of shoes.
