  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of grafting methods on plug seedling quality, growth after transplanting, and yield of oriental melon that those seedlings were raised in the 32 hole plug tray for protected cultivation. Number of leaf and leaf area in approach grafting were higher until 15 days after grafting but lower on 20 days after grafting. Plant height, stem diameter and content of chlorophyll were nearly the same of each grafting methods on 20 days after grafting. Growth of top part, that is, plant height, leaf number, and leaf area on root removed single cotyledon ordinary splice grafting was the highest among the grafting methods. In the underground part, dry weight of root was high and T/R ratio was the lowest. Seedling quality of root removed single cotyledon ordinary splice grafting was the highest among grafting methods before transplanting. Plant height, number of leaf, leaf area and dry weight of root removed single cotyledon ordinary splice grafting in the growth of field were the highest on 30 days after grafting among grafting methods and days required for first flowering was also shorter, 38.4 days among grafting methods. But Fruit weight, content of soluble solids, fruit hardness, and color characteristics in fruit quality were insignificant among each grafting methods. Consequently, grafting methods influenced on the seedling quality, of oriental melon early growth after transplanting and yields. It was concluded that root removed single cotyledon ordinary splice grafting was the best methods in present study. It will be needed to convert grafting methods. Thus new grafting method should be applied.

  • The productivity decrease in environment-friendly farming is the biggest obstacle for the development of environment-friendly food market. This paper aimed to analyze the productivity change in environment-friendly farming of fruit vegetables (oriental melon, watermelon, and strawberry). Box-Cox transformation model was used to infer the functional form of productivity change. The results showed that the periods of productivity restoration to 90% level in oriental melon, strawberry, and watermelon were 14.1 years, 11.4 years, and 6.0 years, respectively. The forms of productivity restoration of fruit vegetables showed differences due to their growth characteristics, incidences of crop pests, preference for the environment- friendly agricultural products, cultivation period and so on. Because the form and period of productivity restoration were different depending on kinds of fruit vegetable, the government policy should be established considering this point of view.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the growth and fruit characteristics of recently introduced or bred varieties in Korea and to review domestic adaptability. As for the sprouting rate among cultivars, 'Stella' was the highest at 91.6%, followed by 'My Heart' (78.3%), 'IFG-6' (77.3%), and 'Hongju Seedless' (73.2%). As for the flower incidence rate by cultivar, 'Stella' was the highest at 113.5%, and 'IFG-6' had a lower flower incidence at 45.3% compared to other cultivars. The diameter of shoots was less than 11.0 mm in the other three cultivars except for 'Hongju Seedless', and 'Hongju Seedless' was the thickest at 12.5 mm and 'Stella' was the thinnest at 9.6 mm. The berry weight of 'My Heart' was 11.3 g, heavier than other cultivars, followed by 'Stella', 'IFG-6' and 'Hongju Seedless'. Soluble sugar content at harvest time by cultivar was about 19.0°Bx or higher, with 'IFG-6' having the highest level of 20.2°Bx, followed by 'My Heart', 'Stella', and 'Hongju Seedless'. Acidity was the lowest in 'My Heart' at 0.39%, followed by 'IFG-6', 'Stella' and 'Hongju Seedless'. As for the coloring, in the case of 'My Heart', the skin color did not change to red even after the harvest season, therefore the grapes were irregularly colored, so it was judged that the development of cultivation technology to enhance the coloring was necessary.

  • The effects of foliar spray of calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$) during fruit growth period was investigated by changes of the shoot growth and fruit quality in 'Daewol' peach (Prunus persica). Since foliar spray of $Ca(OH)_2$ 1, 2, 5, and 10 $g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ at 7 day-intervals after fruit thinning, shoot growth was remarkably decreased compared with control group. An average SPAD value of fifth leaf from proximal part of the shoot was higher as 42.1 specific color difference sensor value (SCDSV) of $Ca(OH)_2$ foliar spraying treatments than 40.9 SCDSV of control group. Photosynthesis rates were also significantly increased by treating $Ca(OH)_2$ of higher concentration. Among fruit characteristics affecting quality, fruit weight was increased depending on concentration of $Ca(OH)_2$ treatment. The soluble solids content was lowest in control group (8.78 $^{\circ}Brix$) compare with higher concentrations of $Ca(OH)_2$ foliar spraying treatment in each 9.17, 9.22, 9.71, 10.58 $^{\circ}Brix$. The acidity and anthocyanin contents were no significant differences among treatment, but firmness of pericarp and flesh of fruits was significantly increased by $Ca(OH)_2$ foliar spray treatment. As a results of morphological observation of leaf, thickness of palisade parenchyma was thinner in control group (63.5 ${\mu}m$) than those of each 86.5, 87.5, 93.6, 107.4 ${\mu}m$ in $Ca(OH)_2$ foliar spraying treatment. Higher $Ca(OH)_2$ foliar spray also increased the thickness of cell wall of epidermis and hypodermis in 'Daewol' fruit.

  • Plant growth-promoting effects of rhizobacterial inoculation obtained in pot experiments cannot always be dependably reproduced in fields. In this study, we investigated the effect of inoculation with Azospirillum brasilense and Methylobacterium oryzae, which have displayed growth promoting effects in several pot experiments, on growth and fruit yield of red pepper under field condition in a plastic-film house. Four rows spaced 90 cm apart were prepared after application of compost ($10Mg\;ha^{-1}$), and red pepper seedlings (Capsicum annum L., Nocgwang) were transplanted in each row with 40-cm space. Experimental treatments were consisted of A. brasilense CW903 inoculation, M. oryzae CBMB20 inoculation, and uninoculated control. Twelve plots, 10 plants per plot, were allotted to the three treatments with four replicates in a completely randomized design. At the time of transplanting, 50 mL of each inoculum ($1{\times}10^8cells\;mL^{-1}$) was introduced into root zone soil of each plant, and re-inoculated at 7 and 14 days after transplant. Plant growth and fruit yield were measured during the experiment. Both A. brasilense CW903 and M. oryzae CBMB20 could not promote growth of red pepper plants. All growth parameters measured were not significantly different among treatments. There were large variations in fruit yield recorded on plot basis, and no statistically significant differences were found among treatments. The failure to demonstrate the expected plant growth promoting effect of the inoculants is possibly due to various environmental factors, including weather and soil characteristics, reducing the possibility to express the potential of the inoculated bacterial strains.

  • This research was carried out to find the proper number of stem training and position of fruit setting that can be stably produced for the cultivation in small and medium types of watermelon during winter. The treatments for the number of stem training were 2-, 3-, 4-stems, respectively. Growth characteristics (plant height, stem diameter, no. of node, etc.) by number of stem training were higher in 2-stem than in 3-4-stem. However, Fruit characteristics such as weight, length, width were high in the 4-stem. There is no significant difference between the soluble solids and fruit setting rate depending on the stem training. The position of fruit setting were three points: 2nd, 3rd, 4th female flower positions. The fruit setting is one fruit per plant. The average fruit setting nodes of 2nd, 3rd and 4th female flowers were 11.5, 15.8 and 23.1 nodes, respectively. The 4th female flower was 0.8 kg heavier than 2nd female flower because of its increased weight as position of fruit setting was higher. However, the soluble solids decreased as the position of fruit setting increased, with the second female flower being 1.3°Bx higher than the 4th female flower. The Fruit setting rate was no significant difference. Considering the growth and fruit characteristics, it is believed that the small and medium-sized watermelon in winter will have a high quality production of watermelon when the stem training is 3-stem and the position of fruit setting is 3rd female flower. However, it is thought that additional studies are needed to stabilize the income of watermelon-growing farms, such as planting distance and adhesion of small and medium-sized varieties.

  • This survey was carried out to investigate the effect of flooding by heavy rain on growth characteristics and disease incidence of 'Fuji'/M.26 mature apple tree in 1998 at Kyongbuk province. The surveyed regions were Andong, Uisung, and Gunwi area. The six orchards were selected from one area, totally 18 orchards were surveyed. The flooded depth of surveyed orchards was from 70 to 350 cm, and the flooded duration was from 6 to 72 h. Defoliation ratio, number of abnormal budding, and flowering per tree were increased along with the increment of flooded depth and duration. Rooting ratio was decreased rapidly with the increment of flooded duration, and dead root ratio was 16.2% in flooded orchards. Marssonia blotch (Diplocarpon mali), white rot (Botryosphaeria dothidea) of fruit, and phytophthora fruit rot (Phytophthora cactorum) incidence were increased in flooded orchards. The analysis results of pearson correlation coefficient among surveyed items showed that higher relationship of abnormal growth characteristics and increment of disease incidence of 'Fuji'/M.26 apple trees with flooded duration than with flooded depth. With these results, the flooded depth was found to be the main factor for the abnormal growth characteristics and disease incidences of 'Fuji'/M.26 apple trees.

  • Environmental effects of light. temperature, and pH of culture media on mycelial growth and fruit-body formation of Flammulina velutipes in synthetic media were investigated. Illumination inhibited mycelial growth, but illumination during the latter part of vegetative growth induced primordia formation. The optimum light intensity and exposure time were $100{\sim}1000$ lux and $4{\sim}8$ hours per day, respectively. High intensity of light was injurous, and in darkness primordia developed into very poor fruit-bodies. The optimum temperature was $25^{\circ}C for mycelial growth and $15^{\circ}C$ for fruit-body formation. The optimum pH range for mycelial growth was found to be from 5.0 to 7.0 and for fruit-body formation from 5.0 to 6.0. In low temperature treatments, a temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ was more effective than $5^{\circ}C\;or\;10^{\circ}C$, it took about 12 hours for primordium formation, but at $5^{\circ}C\;or\;10^{\circ}C$ about 48 hours. The most excellent fruit-body formation were produced from the mycelium growth for 7 to 10 days.

  • To select fruit trees for urban garden with Elaeagnus umbellata var. coreana, Malus domestica 'Alps Otome', Prunus mume, Ribes nigrum, Rubus fructicosus, and Vaccinium corymbosum 'Reka', growth characteristics of these 6 species were compared and effect of trickle irrigation and shading on the growth of these fruit trees were investigated that these treatments were carried out how much these trees are endurable exposed to improper conditions. After passing the winter, E. umbellata var. coreana, M. domestica 'Alps Otome', P. mume, and V. corymbosum 'Reka' showed the highest survival rate, in contrast to R. nigrum with the lowest of 56.0%. In 9 months after planting, the hight growth rate of 62.3% was shown in P. mume but that of E. umbellata var. coreana was stagnant during experimental period. Flowering rate over 80.0% were shown in E. umbellata var. coreana, M. domestica 'Alps Otome', R. fructicosus, and V. corymbosum 'Reka'. On the other hand, R. nigrum has not ever flowering branches. Other species except E. umbellata var. coreana and R. nigrum have about 10 days in flowering duration. After flowering, fruition rate has shown significant difference among 6 species. As a result of both treatment of trickle irrigation and shading, leaf area and leaf weight of E. umbellata var. coreana, M. domestica 'Alps Otome' significantly inceased with treatments that have not affected other species. Based on these result, it is possible to deploy suitable fruit trees to specific garden condition after selecting various fruit trees.
