In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of high- temperature stress on paprika in a semi-closed greenhouse where cooling is available and a normal plastic greenhouse. Paprika grown in a semi-closed greenhouse in which geothermal cooling is provided showed a significantly higher speed of photosynthesis than paprika grown in a 3-layer plastic greenhouse in which there is no cooling system. It suggests that the photosynthesis speed of paprika in a plastic house decreases owing to high temperature stress. Plant height increased by 13cm more in the semi-closed greenhouse, and the size of leaf showed similar growth speed until the 2nd week after transplanting, however, after 3 weeks, the semi-closed greenhouse showed a big difference by 47% compared with the plastic greenhouse. In terms of the fruit count, the semi-closed greenhouse had 10.6 fruits/plant and the plastic greenhouse had 4.6 fruits/plant, indicating that the semi-closed greenhouse had a higher number of fruits by 130% than the plastic greenhouse. The fruit weight also presented a difference between the semi-closed greenhouse and the plastic greenhouse by 46%, which is 566.7g/plant and 387g/plant, respectively. According to the above mentioned results, it was validated that when paprika is cultivated in a semi-closed greenhouse where a cooling system is applied, photosynthesis and growth were better than in the normal plastic greenhouse. Thus, if the hot summer season is overcome by applying the elemental technologies for the cooling system to the normal plastic greenhouse, farm income may increase through improvement in the yield and quality.
Interspecific heterokaryons were obtained between auxotrophic mutants of Pleurotus ostreatus and Pleurotus florida by polyethylene $glycol-Ca^{++}$ induced fusion of somatic protoplasts. The fusion products produced colonies of dense growing mycelium after 10-14 days culture on hypertonic Mushroom Minimal Medium. When they were transferred to Mushroom Minimal Medium plates, the sectors showed normal vegetative morphology but the colonies of irregular shape varied in growth rate. All of the colonies produced fruit body of normal pilei. Some heterokaryon colonies bearing none or only a small amounts of basidiospores were isolated. Fusion products, generally, gave higher basidiocarp yields than the parents.

This study was investigated to develop an alternative medium for the cultivation of oyster mushrooms. The cultivation characteristics for major cultivated varieties of oyster mushrooms were campared with the food waste medium. In addition, water control & a gap formation of food waste is being pointed out as a problem of the medium material. Therefore, certain amounts of earthworm casting were supplied to the food waste medium to overcome the water and compaction phenomenon. This study investigated the use of the total 6 cultivars of oyster mushrooms, the Suhan(PL.1), Chiak No. 5(PL.2), Chiak No. 7(PL.3), Samgu No. 5(PL.4), Samgu No. 8(PL.5), Jangan No. 5(PL.6). In terms of medium, the optimum growth of the mycelium of the oyster mushroom was observed in the beet pulp medium but in food waste, the mycelium's growth was observed as insufficient in the bulk of cultivars. The Jangan No. 5(PL.6) was superior to other cultivars relative to the mycelium's growth. The optimum concentration of earthworm casting added the foodwaste medium was 30%. When Jangan No. 5(PL.6) was incubated in the foodwaste meidum containing 30% earthworm casting, the early days to germination were long, almost double the amount of time than that of the beet pulp medium. However, it was found that the fruit body size was larger than that of the beet pulp by up to 20.5%, and the length of the fruit body was up to 6.2% longer than that of the beet plup. The total yields increased by 60.5%. The analysis results of the oyster mushroom's nutritional contents cultured using the food waste medium, shows that the protein, vitamin A and vitamin E increased 70.6%, 2.4%, 0.8% respectively, the fat decreased by 12.6% and the oleic acid increased in a very small amount compared to that of the beet pulp medium.

In vitro fermentation was conducted to figure out alternative fiber sources for horse feed. For the development of value-added products as a horse feed resource, the pomaces from apple, carrot, grape, and citrus were fermented under solid-state conditions in the presence of 60% soybean meal with 40% of each fruit pomace at 60% of moisture content. Lactobacillus plantarum SK3873, Lactobacillus plantarum SK3893, Weissella cibaria SK3880, and Bacillus subtilis SK3889 were isolated from the fermented fruit pomace by inoculation of horse feces. For the growth of Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Lactobacillus plantarum, they were inoculated in 3-step order at 0, 12, and 24 h, respectively. The fruit pomace was fermented for 48 h at $35^{\circ}C$. The pH of the apple, carrot, grape, citrus and all mixed pomaces decreased from 5.45~6.25 to 4.40~4.77. Microbial growth was maintained at $10^8{\sim}10^9cfu/g$. After 12 and 24 h incubation, dry matter of carrot pomace were highest at 54.84 and 56.66%, respectively (P<0.05) and that of grape pomace was lower than others during fermentation (P<0.05). Dry matter was generally reduced by about 20%. NDF decreased gradually or maintained after 24 h, indicating the fiber degradation. Ash content tended to decrease during fermentation. After 48 hours fermentation, Bacillus, yeast and Lactobacillus showed an excellent growth by using juice by-products. These results suggest that fermented juice pomace has a potential as horse feedstuff with probiotics to maintain beneficial microflora in horse gut.
BACKGROUND: Plastic mulches widely used in raised-bed culture mainly to conserve water, control weeds and raise soil temperature. The most widely used plastic mulch colour is black. Reflective red and far-red light can affect on growth and yield of various vegetable crops. Objectives of this study were to investigate the characteristics of reflective light of black and red plastic mulches, and to evaluate the reflective red and far-red light on the quality characteristics and yield of the Oriental melon (Cucumis. Melo L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.). METHODS AND RESULTS: Oriental melon and tomato were cultivated over the reflective red and black plastic mulches in plastic house. Reflected red and far-red light over the red plastic mulch were 2.6 times higher than those of black plastic mulch. Red to F-Red ratio of black plastic mulch, red plastic mulch and sunlight were 1.14, 0.93 and 1.16 respectively. Intensity of reflected red and far-red light over red plastic mulch were highest at surface height of 30 cm. The higher the height of the surface decrease the intensity of far-red light. Accordingly, Red to F-Red ratio were increased. Reflective red plastic mulch increased the weight of fruit and content of sugar in Oriental melon and tomato. CONCLUSION(s): Yield of Oriental melon over reflective red plastic mulch was higher than that of black plastic mulch. These results suggested that reflected red and far-red light over the red plastic mulch affected allocation of photosynthate in growing Oriental melon.

Background and objective: This study was conducted to understand urban residents' perception of indoor plants in order to assist in the preparation of guidelines for growing plants indoors. Methods: Questionnaires were distributed to urban residents currently growing plants or with experience of growing plants. The data of 247 respondents were subjected to analysis to assess their level of interest and ability with regard to growing plants, and their recognition of the selection and function of plants. Results: Respondents showed high interest in growing plants at a level of 6.77, but their ability was moderate. This suggests that information regarding plant maintenance should be provided to urban residents. They recognized the function of plants for improving the environment as important, and expected that indoor plants would improve their mood and visual experience. Satisfaction with growing plants was high from an emotional perspective. They recognized that the function of air purification function was important even if the actual performance or effect was not great. This indicates that the function of air purification should be emphasized more. As the result of the IPA, plants should be selected in consideration of morphological characteristics such as leaf, flower and fruit, and continuously managed to maintain their characteristics. Since the performance of pots was less satisfactory compared to their importance, they should be selected so that they harmonize better with plants and are of the appropriate size to fit the space. The type of plants is an important factor in plant selection in order to perform an environmental function, and the flower color and pot size are important in terms of aesthetics and healing. Conclusion: When horticulture information on indoor plants is provided to urban residents, first, it should be provided to satisfy the functions of the plants required by urban residents and in order to promote and maintain the proper growth of plants. Second, various contents that utilize components should be developed to achieve plant function so that resident can determine the function of plants and select the type, quantity, and shape of plants to achieve the desired function.
The berry growth and pericarp characteristics were characterized to confirm the effects of bagging periods on berry cracking during berry development in 'Kyoho' grape. The berry weight was the highest at 13.4 g in late period of bagging treated at 7 to 9 weeks after full bloom (WAFB) as compared with the lowest of 12.3 g in total period bagging. The berry cracking rate under critical turgor pressure in the non-bagging control was 53.3%, while those of bagging treatments were decreased in the order of 42.7%, 37.3%, 33.3%, and 18.7% in bagged during 3 to 9, 3 to 5, 5 to 7, and 7 to 9 WAFB, respectively. In the results of observation on histological characteristics of pericarp, berry lenticels of whole bagging treatments had smaller and normal shape compared with non-bagging control treatment. Especially on the pericarp of late period bagged during 7 to 9 WAFB, suberization around stomata and micro-cracking were not observed and structural strength of pericarp was increased with thicker sub-epidermal layer and cell wall. Therefore, the results indicate that bagging treatment for two weeks just before the veraison when the day length and daylight is relatively longer and stronger can effectively reduce berry cracking by strengthening structure of pericarp in 'Kyoho' grape.

'Muha' is a new strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) cultivar, which was released by the Highland Agriculture Research Institute in 2015. The 'Muha' cultivar originated from a cross between 'Maehyang' and 'Selva' that showed excellent ever-bearing characteristics, including continuous flowering habit and high soluble-solid content under long-day and high temperature conditions in 2010. This cultivar was initially named 'Saebong No. 7' after examining its characteristics and productivity in summer culture from 2011 to 2014. After regional adaptability tests in 2015, 'Muha' was selected from Saebong No. 7 as an elite cultivar. The general characteristics of 'Muha' include semispreading type, elliptical leaf, and strength vigor in growth. The fruits are conical in shape, red in color. 'Muha' plants have 18.7 flower clusters, 8.7 more than 'Flamenco' plants. The fruit hardness of 'Muha' and Flamenco' was about the same. The number of fruits of 'Muha' was 37.2, which was 20 higher than that of 'Flamenco'. The marketable yield was 23,981 kg·ha-1, 159% higher than 'Flamenco'. 'Muha' is suitable for north and highland area of the Southeast Asia as a high hardness and yield cultivar, because it showed continuous flowering habit under long-day and high temperature conditions.
This study was conducted to determine the germination characteristics, oil contents and fatty acid compositions of the different safflower accessions. The safflower accessions had nearly the same germination period of about 12-13 days and the germination rate was more than 87.5%. Plant height grew until 84 days after seeding. The number of leaves did not increase after 70 days from seeding. The accessions had a difference of six loaves from 17 to 23 loaves. Flowering time had a difference of 11 days from 79 days after planting to 90 days after planting. The Jangsung accession had the shortest flowering time of 79 days after planting. In the characteristics of bearing fruit, the number of branches including main stem are from 4.7 to 8.8. The number of head flowers had nearly the same number of branches which were 4.8-8.9, numbers of seed per head flower were 29.3-49.1 and the weight of 100 seeds were 2.9-3.9 g. The crude fat content was 21.8-33.9% and fatty acid content was 66.6-77.6% containing mostly linolenic acid. Oeic acid content was 9.2-16.5% and it contained palmitic acid, stearic acid, venin acid, arachidonic acid etc. Results of this study, the accession Jangsung, which had the shortest flowering time and had the most crude fat content, was observed to be the best accession for the breeding of safflower.
For the breeding purpose, in this study we attempted to select a new Lentinula edodes strain by comparing mycelial growth rate, fruit-body quality and mushroom productivity per substrate weight of hybrid strains with parent strains. Nineteen hybrid strains were made by cross of di-karyotic and mono-karyotic to develop strains suitable for sawdust cultivation of L. edodes. Among the nineteen strains, ten were selected by comparing mycelial growth rate on PDA media and wood rot on sawdust-based substrates. The most mushroom harvesting was achieved by 100 days incubation from KFRI 960, KFRI 961, KFRI 962, KFRI 963, KFRI 964, KFRI 971, KFRI 973 and 125 days from KFRI 968, 970. Experiment of incubation periods with the ten strains showed that there were productivity differences between 100 and 150 days incubations. Through comparison of hybrid strains' mushroom productivity it was found that there was no difference in mushroom productivity through crossing high temperature types with high temperature types, crossing low temperature types with high temperature types and crossing unknown temperature types with high temperature types, but there was difference through crossing middle temperature types with high temperature types. Hybrid strains showed better productivity compared with parent strains. Fruiting temperature type analysis of hybrid strains confirmed that strains of high temperature types have a dominant character.
