This study was conducted to investigate physiologically active components and antioxidant capacity of grapevine leaves at growth stages. The leaves from two strains of grapevine, 'Campbell Early' and 'Rosario Bianco', were collected at five different growth stages (leafing, blossom, fruiting, coloring, and maturity). Total flavonoid content was higher in leafing stage than the other stages and gradually decreased during growing. Total phenol content was higher in 'Campbell Early' than in 'Rosario Bianco'. Hydroxyl radical scavenging ability increased in the leafing stage and decreased during growing. The electron donating ability was higher in 'Campbell Early' then 'Rosario Bianco' until blossom stage. Leaves from 'Campbell Early' showed higher total antioxidant capacity than those from 'Rosario Bianco'. According to the above results, grapevine leaves until the blossom stage would possess strong antioxidant activity by physiologically active components such as polyphenol compounds. Therefore, these results suggest that young grapevine leaves can be used as materials for the development of functional foods.
Objectives There is growing interest in the management of cancer survivors due to the increase in long-term survivors. But no literature research focusing on the management of cancer survivors has been done in Sasang Constitutional Medicine despite the superiority in comprehensive management of patients. Therefore, we planned to look into the perspective of health preservation in Sasang Constitutional Medicine. Methods We investigated the 『Donguisusebowon-Sasangchobongwon(東醫壽世保元 四象草本卷)』. We classified the contents which might be applicable to cancer patients. After classifying, we compared the contents with clinical experience and health preservation methods of Western Medicine. Results and Conclusions The health preservation is mentioned mostly as Joyang(調養). The Sasang Constitutional Medicine classifies the lives of people in 8 stages. Depending on the stages, there is a difference in the prognosis and management. Cancer patients can be regarded as being in the stages of Noeok(牢獄) and Wiegyeong(危傾). In these stages, patient's health preservation is important. In order to achieve long-term survival and to prevent disease progression, it is important to maintain requisite energy(保命之主). The attitudes that patient must have are simplicity(簡約), attentiveness(勤幹), vigilance(警戒), knowledgeability(聞見) for keeping one's own health and fulfilling the social obligations of human relations. The concept of health preservation in Sasang Constitutional Medicine covers the wide range of health. But detailed methods for patients to understand and practice are lacking. Moreover, it is hard for cancer patients to access the information. Therefore, further researches should be done to make the concept more specific and easy to access for cancer patients.

Recently, there has been a growing tendency to use whole crop rice for feeds as there is an increased rice supply and a decrease in the demand for rice in Korea. Little information, however, is available about the management and utilization of whole crop rice for feeds. This study was conducted to decide the optimum harvest date through examining the plant height, dry matter(DM) yield and feed composition of whole crop rice harvested at different maturity. Field study was established early in May until October 7th on a rice field at Yupori, Sinbuk-yeup, Chunchon, Kangwon-Do. "Ilpum" mutant rice was sown at 52 kg/ha, and N, P and K were applied at 209, 113 and 81 kg/ha, respectively. The rice was harvested at six different mature stages for analysis; booting stage; 17 Aug., milk-ripe stage; 27 Aug., dough stage; 7 Sep., yellow ripe stage; 17 Sep., dead ripe stage; 27 Sep. and full ripe stage; 7 Oct. Plant height was 77 cm in booting stage (P<0.05) which was lower when compared to the other stages among which the heights did not differ with average range of 93∼97 cm. The highest dry matter yield was observed in yellow ripe stage (22.8 T/ha), which was followed by dead ripe stage (19.3 T/ha), full ripe stage (19.3 T/ha), and dough stage (15.1 T/ha). Crude protein (CP) and Neutral detergent fiber (NDF) concentrations consistently decreased with maturity. The highest concentrations of CP and NDF were obtained in booting stage with 9 and 73.6%, respectively (P<0.05), and lowest in full ripe stage with 5.8 and 64.6%, respectively (P<0.05). The concentration of total digestible nutrient (TDN) was highest in booting stage (59.7%); however no significant difference was found among other stages. The concentrations of Ca and P were not different among mature stages. According to these results, the yellow ripe period is appropriate to harvest the whole crop rice for forage considering dry matter yields, feed compositions and TDN concentrations.
The purpose of this study was to establish blood reference values for miniature pigs from various growth ages before pre-puberty. 12 miniature pigs from two swine farms were sampled by jugular venipuncture. Routine hematological and biochemical determinations were performed using whole blood and serum. For the variables examined in each age group the means and the standard deviations were calculated. In hematological values, there are significant changes (p<0.05) in RBC, hematocrit and platelet values in each group. In RBC and hematocrit values, 4-week group shows the lowest level, whereas in platelet values, 4-week group shows the highest level. In biochemical values, there are significant chnges (p<0.05) in glucose and GGT in each group, and in other biochemical values there are no significant changes during growing periods. The values presented here may be useful for knowing the normal values for miniature pigs and also screening the normal pigs in the early days of their life and during the developemental stages.
This study was conducted to find out the variation modes of the absorbtion contents of N, P and K and the contents of decursin, decursinol and sugar in Angelica gigas Nakai at different growth stages. The results of field study were as follows. The dried weights of root and shoot was increased by the application of nitrogen and potassium fertilizers during the growing seasons. But, the effect of phosphorus application was observed only the increasing of the dried weight of shoot. During the growing seasons, the contents of nitrogen and phosphorus in root was decreased, but in shoot was increased. The potassium contents of root was increased and that of shoot was decreased. The decursin and total sugar contents of root were continually increased, and the decursinol and reducing sugar contents were increased until the middle growth stage and after that were decreased.
Wee1 is a kinase regulator of the M-phase promoting factor (MPF; a complex of cdc2 and cyclin B1). The present study was undertaken to determine the role(s) of wee1 in the early stages of mouse ovarian follicles. The expression of wee1 and the correlated cell-cycle components, namely cdc2, cyclin B1, and cdc25C, were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. In addition, the expression of Tyr15-phosphorylated cdc2 (cdc2-p) was also examined to determine whether wee1 kinase phosphorylates cdc2 existed. Each component except cdc25C was found cytoplasmic in the oocytes at all stages of follicles, while cdc25C was not detected in primordial follicles. It was found primarily in ovarian somatic cells and to a small extent in granulosa cells of the growing follicles. To further confirm the expression of cell-cycle components in the primordial follicular oocytes, day1 ovaries were enzymatically and mechanically dissociated, then oocytes were isolated from somatic including pre-granulosa cells, and we confirmed that cdc2-p was expressed in oocytes of primordial follicles. From the results of the present study, we concluded wee1, without the counteracting cdc25C, would cause meiotic arrest of oocytes by the inhibitory phosphorylation of cdc2. The expression of all these proteins in the granulosa cells of growing follicles may regulate their mitosis concurrently with the growth of oocytes and follicles.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of extruded pellet (EP) size on the growth performance of olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus at the juvenile (Exp-I; $62.2{\pm}0.05$), growing (Exp-II; $150{\pm}1$) and sub-adult (Exp-III; $299{\pm}1$) stages. In Exp-I (3, 4, 5 and 6 mm diets), Exp-II (4, 9, 11 and 13 mm diets) and Exp-III (9, 11, 13 and 16 mm diets), triplicate groups of fish were fed four EP diets of different pellet sizes. In Exp-I, larger pellet sizes were significantly better than the smallest pellet size (3 mm). In Exp-II, significantly improved feed and protein efficiency were observed with increasing pellet size. The feed conversion ratios of the fish fed the 4 and 9 mm diets were significantly lower than those of fish fed 11 and 13 mm diets. The dietary digestibility of protein and energy was higher in smaller EPs than in larger sizes. In Exp-III, the growth performance of fish was not affected by the pellet size. However, feed intake was significantly affected, increasing with increasing pellet size. Therefore, the optimum pellet sizes for olive flounder under the conditions in this study were 5 mm for 60-150 g fish and 9 mm for 150-500 g fish.
Objective: This research was carried out to investigate the effects of corn particle size on the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of energy and nutrients fed to pigs at four different growth stages and therefore to provide basis for better application of corn in pig feeds. Methods: Eighteen weanling piglets, 18 growing barrows, 24 gestating sows and 24 lactating sows were used in this study. Within each stage, pigs were allotted to 1 of 3 or 4 corn-soybean meal diets which were formulated with different corn particle size in a completely randomized design with 6 replicate pigs per diet. Each stage lasted for 19 days, including 7 days for cages adaptation, 7 days for adaptation to diets and followed by 5 days for total collection of feces and urine. Results: For nursery and growing stages, the results showed that digestible energy content and ATTD of gross energy (GE), dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) was increased (p<0.05) as the corn particle size reduced. Meanwhile, the metabolizable energy content and ATTD of crude protein (CP) tended to increase. For gestating sows, no differences were found in the ATTD of nutrients among dietary treatments. As for lactating sows, there were linear and quadratic increases (p<0.05) in the ATTD of DM, GE, NDF as the corn being finer milled. Quadratic response in ATTD of ADF and CP (p<0.05) were observed as sows fed with four different diets. Conclusion: Reducing corn particle size can increase digestibility of nutrients fed to young pigs and lactating sows. No effects were observed in present experiment when gestating sows were fed with different particle sized corn.

The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the correlation between the midpalatal suture maturation and skeletal maturation in growing children aged 7 - 15 years and predict the maturational stages of the midpalatal suture corresponding to skeletal maturity assessed by the skeletal maturation indicators (SMI) and middle phalanx of the third finger (MP3) stages. The group of this retrospective study was consisted of randomly selected 132 male and 135 female in age from 7 - 15 years. The maturation of the midpalatal suture was evaluated by using images from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) while the skeletal age was assessed by hand-wrist radiography. CBCT images and hand-wrist radiographs used in this study were obtained from all subjects for orthodontic diagnosis before orthodontic treatment. The maturational stages of the midpalatal suture showed strong correlations with both SMI and MP3 stages. The correlation between the midpalatal suture maturation and SMI (Spearman's correlation coefficient, ϒS = 0.905, p < 0.05) was slightly greater than that of MP3 stages (ϒS = 0.830, p < 0.05). There was a positive significant correlation between the midpalatal suture maturation and chronological age (ϒS = 0.868,p < 0.05). CBCT for evaluation of the midpalatal suture maturational stages may be unnecessary in every pediatric patients because SMI and MP3 stages were both replaceable useful methods for assessing maturation of the midpalatal suture before orthopedic treatment. In this retrospective study, the diagnostic reliability of the SMI method for estimating midpalatal suture maturation showed better reliability than the MP3 method.
