  • The design cycle associated with large engineering systems requires an initial decomposition of the complex system into design processes which are coupled through the transference of output data. Some of these design processes may be grouped into iterative subcycles. In analyzing or optimizing such a coupled system, it is essential to determine the best order of the processes within these subcycles to reduce design cycle time and cost. This is accomplished by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and processing it in parallel. This paper proposes new strategy for parallel decomposition of multidisciplinary problems to improve design efficiency by using the multiple objective genetic algorithm (MOGA), and a sample test case is presented to show the effects of optimizing the sequence with MOGA.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the differences in clothing purchase behaviors among the patrons of Dongdaemun market grouped by clothing shopping orientation. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted among 600 men and women from ages 15-29 from August 9 to September 12, 1999; 548 were used for the data analysis. Based on the clothing buying orientation, the consumers of Dongdaemun market were divided into four groups: plan circumspected, economy-oriented, fashion-oriented and shopping-oriented. These groups showed significant differences in the selected criteria used for clothing purchase, the amount of money and time spent for shopping. The groups were also significantly different in the usage rate and perceived of the market, and the satisfaction levels with the shopping environments and services of the Dongdaemun Market. With regards to the satisfaction levels, they were showed significant different in the diversity and fashion statement of products, business hours, and advertisement/sales promotion in order. The fashion-oriented group was the highest satisfaction level about the four variables among groups.

  • In this paper, we present a tool to calculate the distribution of amino acid contacts in proteins as well as in protein domains. The proteins are grouped according to the classification by Yanay Ofran and Burkhard Rost[1]. In addition, a protein's distribution was compared with that of proteins in the same group as well as the entire collection of proteins across all groups. With these statistics, biologists can pick out proteins which have characteristics that defer from the norm.

  • This paper presents a knowledge-based computer aided process planning system that automatically selects machine tools, machining operations and cutting tools and determines sequences of the machining operations for prismatic parts in die manufacturing. In the proposed system, parts are described by manufacturing features and grouped into part families based on the functions. Each part is repressented by a part frame which consists of basic data and manufacturing features. Knowledge for manufacturing is acquired from the domain expert and represented by frames. A decision model for selection of machine tools, machining operations and cutting tools and for determining sequences of the machining operations are developed by employing the Mealy machine in finite automata with output. The decision procedure and the order of priority which inputs manufacturing features into the Mealy machine are represented by rule for each part family. Backward chaining is used for the proposed system. The proposed system is implemented by using TURBO-PROLOG on the IBM PC/AT. A case study for the slide core is presented to show the function of the proposed system.

  • Economic Reliability test plans(ERTP) are proposed considering that the life time of the submitted items follow the Pareto distribution of the second kind. For various specified acceptance number, sample size and producer's risk, a minimum test termination time is obtained. A comparison of proposed plan has been made with the existing plan developed by Aslam et al. (2010). The results are explained by tables and example.

  • A survey was conducted on the vegetation of Seogmo island, which is small island (ca. 41 okm2) located about 1km west of Kanghwa island in the central Korea, from Aug. 1983 to May 1984. Based on the field data, actual vegetation map and potential natural vegetation map were made. The island is covered with broad-leaved trees dominated with Quercus variabilis. The dominance diversity curves obtaiend in different associations are grouped in two types, lognormal distribution forms at the undisturbed vegetation and geometric series at the disturbed or rocky sites. It seems that the curves show to us the nature of their ecocline by the hypothesis of some investigators, i.e. Random niche boundary hypothesis, niche preemption hypothesis, lognormal distribution and logarithmic series. Total numbers of vascular plant species of the island were recorded 108 families, 348 genera, 475 species, 73 variaties and 7 forma. And Pte.-Q Index, 0.93, and Fisher's Index, 589.8, were higher than those in neighboring islands.

  • Chiller system plays an important role of maintaining room temperature constantly by supplying chilled water to Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning(HVAC)or area room cooler equipment during plant normal operation or accident condition. Chiller failures are one of the most frequently occurring equipment failures. If the types of chiller failures are analyzed and grouped thoroughly, it would be helpful to make chiller maintenance strategy at the plants. That would enhance equipment reliability of chiller in the end. In this paper, chiller failure data during three years were analyzed and categorized by specific failure code. In addition, the various proposals to improve equipment reliability of chiller were suggested such as Preventive Maintenance Optimization(PMO) strategy and performance monitoring reinforcement and so on.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of creativity management factors on R&D performance. To do this, the data(885 cases) was collected from 19 Korean Government-supported Research Institutes, and 3 hypothesis derived from model of creativity management(after here CM) were tested. Major findings are as follows: 1) CM factors are grouped into diversity, autonomy, connectivity, redundancy and flexibility factors; 2) The factors that can explain R&D performance are connectivity, autonomy, diversity and flexibility factors; 3) All CM factors have significant relationship with satisfaction of the employees; 4) Flexibility and connectivity factors give effects on turnover intention of the members. This study has some limitations in model building and empirical testing. But this study provided the theoretical and managerial implications about CM and R&D management, especially Government-supported Research Institute.

  • A high-speed directional interpolation algorithm based on the pattern of a $2{\times}2$ pixel block is proposed in this paper. The basic concept of the proposed algorithm is started from UDWT(un-decimated discrete wavelet transform), but there are no transform operations. In order to detect the direction of the edge, 4-pixel differences of two pairs in the $2{\times}2$ block are compared. The $2{\times}2$ block patterns are grouped into total 8 classes, and thereafter the directional interpolation is executed according to the type of the pattern. Since the calculation of the proposed algorithm is very simple and needs a few additions on integer data type, the computation time is almost same as that of bilinear interpolation algorithm. However, experimental results show that the output quality of the proposed one is better than those of the conventional interpolation ones in the objective quality and the computation time.

  • The present work is an attempt to provide an overview, about the status of R&D and current trends in Hydrogen Production using High Temperature Reactors. Bibliographic references from the INIS database, the Science Direct database and the NTIS database were downloaded and analyzed. Ten year data on the subject, published between 2001 and 2010, was selected for the study. Appropriate qued ry formulations on these databases, resulted in the retrieval of 621 unique bibliographic records. Using the content analysis method, all the records were analyzed. Part One of the analysis details Scientometric R&D indicators, Part Two is a subject-based analysis, grouped under: A. International Initiatives and Programmes for Hydrogen Production; B. European R&D initiatives for Hydrogen production; C. National Initiatives and Programmes for Nuclear Hydrogen Production; D. Reactor Technologies for Nuclear Hydrogen production; E. Fuel Developments; F. Hydrogen Production Processes using HTRs and G. Materials Consideration for Nuclear Hydrogen Production. The results of this analysis are summarized in the study.
