  • For quality standardization, the application of functional lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as starter cultures for food fermentation is a well-known method in the fermented food industry. This study assessed the effect of adding a non-thermally microbial inactivated starter culture to kimchi, a traditional Korean food, in standardizing its quality. In this study, pretreatment based on sterilization processes, namely, slightly acidic electrolyzed water (SAEW) disinfection and ultraviolet C light-emitting diode (UVC-LED) of raw and subsidiary kimchi materials were used to reduce the initial microorganisms in them, thereby increasing the efficiency and value of the kimchi LAB starter during fermentation. Pretreatment sterilization effectively suppressed microorganisms that threatened the sanitary value and quality of kimchi. In addition, pretreatment based on sterilization effectively reduced the number of initial microbial colonies in kimchi, creating an environment in which kimchi LAB starters could settle or dominate, compared to non-sterilized kimchi. These differences in the initial microbial composition following the sterilization process and the addition of kimchi LAB starters led to differences in the metabolites that positively affect the taste and flavor of kimchi. The combined processing technology used in our study, that is, pre-sterilization and LAB addition, may be a powerful approach for kimchi quality standardization.

  • The research has been carried out to examine how sensory processing ability of children of multicultural families in farming areas can affect their social maturity. Short sensory profile and social maturity scale were conducted to fifty four children of multinational parents who live in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Jeollanam-do. The data were analysed by statistics process. The result of the analysis revealed three findings. Firstly, there exieted certain delays in sensory processing ability and social maturity. Multicultural children had an average point of $154.33{\pm}21.24$ regarding sensory processing ability and with regards to social age and social quotient of social maturity of them were 1.76 year old and $91.28{\pm}18.31$ point respectively. Another interesting finding is that significant differences of the influence, in which sensory processing ability of the example group affected social maturity, were found in categories of movement sensitivity, underresponsive/seeks sensation and low energy/weak of social age part(p<0.05). There were significant differences between auditory filtering as well as movement sensitivity, underresponsive sensation and low energy/weak of social quotient area(p<0.05). Finally, variables of the impact on social maturity of the group of children were analysed to examine to what extent sensory processing ability of the children had affected and the influencing rate of social age and social quotient of social maturity, with 45.3% and 66.3% respectively.

  • Multimedia service based on interactivity, personalization, multiple channels and community distinguishes IPTV from incumbent TV. But data encoding/decoding time and image frame processing should be considered in digital TV versus analog device. Especially channel zapping time is one of the most important parameters for the service quality of IPTV. This paper proposes the mechanism for decreasing the channel zapping time with multiple decoder and image frame processing. We also implemented the multi-group video community service system using IP multicasting function supporting interactive learning service.

  • Methane carbon dioxide reforming (MCDR) is a promising way of utilizing greenhouse gas for hydrogen-rich fuel production. Compared with other types of reactors, Compact Reformers (CRs) are efficient for fuel processing. In a CR, a thin solid plate is placed between two porous catalyst layers to enable efficient heat transfer between the two catalyst layers. In this study, the physical and chemical processes of MCDR in a CR are studied numerically with a 2D numerical model. The model considers the multi-component gas transport and heat transfer in the fuel channel and the porous catalyst layer, and the MCDR reaction kinetics in the catalyst layer. The finite volume method (FVM) is used for discretizing the governing equations. The SIMPLEC algorithm is used to couple the pressure and the velocity. Parametrical simulations are conducted to analyze in detail the effects of various operating/structural parameters on the fuel processing behavior.

  • Langasite is a new piezoelectric material which is similar to quartz in its acoustic behaviours. In this study, pure Langasite and Langasite family grouo powders were synthesized by the solid state reaction in air. And then diffusion of synthesized powders were controlled by B and C ions in the{{{{ { A}_{ 3} { B}_{5} { CD}_{ 14 }}}}} structure. Dielectric constant and lattice anisotripy of Langasite and family group were measured to be 17, 22~27 in the range of 1 kHz to 13 MHz and about 1.6. respectively.

  • Barium uranium sulfides, $BaUS_3$ and $BaU_2B_5$, were synthesized in a single phase by the reactin of $(Ba, UO_2)(NO_3)_2$ at Ba/U=1 and 0.5 with carbon disulfide at 1273 K for 6 h. They crystallized in orthorhombic structure with space group, Pnma. The lattice parameters a, b and c are 7.493, 10.38 and 7.238$\AA$ for $BaUS_3$ and 7.525, 8.475 and 11.858$\AA$ for $BaU_2S_5$, respectively. The electrical conductivity of these compunds increased with increasing temperature above 200K, below which however, it was nearly temperature independent. The Hall coefficient suggested that they are n-type semiconductors.

  • In practical designs, most of the multidisciplinary problems have a large-size and complicate design system. Since multidisciplinary problems have hundreds of analyses and thousands of variables, the grouping of analyses and the order of the analyses in the group affect the speed of the total design cycle. Therefore, it is very important to reorder and regroup the original design processes in order to minimize the total computational cost by decomposing large multidisciplinary problems into several multidisciplinary analysis subsystems (MDASS) and by processing them in parallel. In this study, a new decomposition method is proposed for parallel processing of multidisciplinary design optimization, such as collaborative optimization (CO) and individual discipline feasible (IDF) method. Numerical results for two example problems are presented to show the feasibility of the proposed method.

  • An on-line algorithm that discriminates brown rice kernels on their echelon feeder using color image processing is presented for quality inspection. A rapid color image segmentation algorithm based on Bayesian clustering method was developed by means of the look-up table which was made from the significant clusters selected by experts. A robust estimation method was presented to improve the stability of color clusters. Discriminant analysis of color distributions was employed to distinguish nine types of brown rice kernels. Discrimination accuracies of the on-line discrimination algorithm were ranged from 72% to 85% for the sound, cracked, green-transparent and green-opaque, greater than 93% for colored, red, and unhulled, about 92% for white-opaque and 67% for chalky, respectively.

  • As a powerful and flexible processor, the Graphic Processing Unit (GPU) can offer a great faculty in solving many high-performance computing applications. Sweep3D, which simulates a single group time-independent discrete ordinates (Sn) neutron transport deterministically on 3D Cartesian geometry space, represents the key part of a real ASCI application. The wavefront process for parallel computation in Sweep3D limits the concurrent threads on the GPU. In this paper, we present multi-dimensional optimization methods for Sweep3D, which can be efficiently implemented on the finegrained parallel architecture of the GPU. Our results show that the overall performance of Sweep3D on the CPU-GPU hybrid platform can be improved up to 4.38 times as compared to the CPU-based implementation.
