In order to estimate spatial physicochemical properties of the spring waters in the study area, spring waters at 57 sites were investigated for measuring ten items (temperature, pH, Eh, EC, TDS, DO, salinity, alkalinity, discharge rate, and surface elevation), To compare each component with one another, regression analysis was carried out. Kriging was used to estimate the spatial characteristics and continuity of data in the study area. To solve kriging equation, the semivariogram was calculated using geostatistical software GS$^{+}$(version 3.1). As a result of semivariogram analysis, the data of nine components but surface elevation could be assumed as stationary random function, and ordinary kriging method was used for making contour maps.s.

In this study, to evaluate the performance of leachate collection and removal system, the clogging of geotextile filter was tested and simulated for HELP. As a result of clogging test, the all permeability of geotextiles were decreased rapidly in several day. Also, $Ca^{2+}$ and CODcr concentrations were decreased during test. In model simulation for HELP, Daily discharge volume was shown insignificant change with the filter clogging. however, this result may effect on increasing of the hydraulic gradient in waste layer.r.

Baswflow is defined as short term discharge through groundwater caused by rainfall events. Impacts of baseflow is significant on water quality especially where pervious agricultural watershed as groundwater is more vulnerable to the contamination. In this study, the Cheongmicheon watershed was subjected to study to assess the impacts of baseflow on surface water quality, where more than 90% of pollutant load is originated from the livestock raising area, and very high probability of surface water contamination due to the baseflow. To estimate nutrient loading cased by baseflow, NI (Numerical Integration) model and LOADEST (LOADing ESTimation) model were used.

Hydrologic responses to the 4September 2010 $M_W$ 7.1 and 22 February 2011 $M_W$ 6.2 Canterbury earthquakes ranged from near instantaneous co-seismic liquefaction and changes in groundwater levels, to more sustained (days to months) changes in river discharge, spring flow and groundwater level. There was some indication of a sustained change in aquifer properties. This paper presents some of the hydrographs from the September and February events, and compares the response to each event, briefly taking into account the location of the bore relative to each earthquake, together with other factors such as borehole depth. Over the months following the September earthquake, a pattern emerged of relatively short-term responses in the shallow aquifers and in the confined aquifer system, close to the coast. A longer term response appears to have occurred in inland, deep bores, where water levels 12 months after the September event were (in some cases) up to 20 metres higher than would have been expected based on simple modelling (see Figure 3). Some examples of these are highlighted.
In order to develop an air-stripping based remediation process to remove the TOC (Total Organic Carbon) in groundwater around the underground LPG storage cavern, the laboratory scale experiments at various conditions (change of air injection volume and temperature, the application of ultrasonic treatment, etc.) for two types of groundwater (initial TOC concentration of 608 mg/L and 153 mg/L, respectively). From results of experiment, as the air injection rate for stripping into groundwater increased from 2 L/min to 11 L/min and as the air-stripping time increased from 1 hour to 24 hour, the TOC removal efficiency of air-stripping increased. However, the TOC concentration of treated groundwater was higher than the discharge tolerance limit (100 mg/L) even after 24 hour stripping at the maximum air injection rate of 11 L/min. The main compounds of the TOC in groundwater were identified as methanol and propane and the long stripping time (more than 24 hour) was needed to separate the methanol from groundwater because of the affinity between water and methanol. At 20℃ and 4 L/min of air injection, the TOC removal efficiency increased to 59.1% after 24 hour air-stripping. When the temperature of groundwater increased to 30℃ and 40℃, the TOC removal efficiency increased up to 80.0% and 82.8%, suggesting that more than 24 hour air-stripping at 40℃ is needed to lower the TOC concentration to below 100 mg/L and the additional TOC removal process as well as the air-stripping is necessary. When the temperature increased to 60℃ and the ultrasonic treatment was conjugated with the air-stripping, the TOC removal efficiency increased to 87.8% within 5 hour stripping and the final TOC concentration (72.4 mg/L) was satisfied with the TOC discharge tolerance limit. The TOC removal efficiency for groundwater having low TOC concentration (153 mg/L) also showed similar removal efficiency of 89.7% (the final TOC concentration: 18.9 mg/L). Results in this study supported that the air-stripping conjugated with the ultrasonic treatment could remove successfully the TOC in groundwater around the underground LPG strorage cavern.

In the processes of hydrological cycle, when precipitation reaches the ground surface, water may become surface runoff or infiltrate into soil and then possibly further percolate into groundwater aquifer. A part of the water is returned to the atmosphere through evaporation and transpiration. Soil moisture dynamics driven climate fluctuations plays a key role in the simulation of water transfer among ground surface, unsaturated zone and aquifer. In this study, a one-layer canopy and a four-layer soil representation is used for a coupled soil-vegetation modeling scheme. A non-zero hydraulic diffusivity between the deepest soil layer modeled and groundwater table is used to couple the numerical equations of soil moisture and groundwater dynamics. Simulation of runoff generation is based on the mechanism of both infiltration excess overland flow and saturation overland flow nested in a numerical model of soil moisture dynamics. Thus, a comprehensive hydrological model integrating canopy, soil zone and aquifer has been developed to evaluate water resources in the plain region of Huaihe River basin in East China and simulate water transfer among precipitation, surface water, soil moisture and groundwater. The newly developed model is capable of calculating hydrological components of surface runoff, evapotranpiration from soil and aquifer, and groundwater recharge from precipitation and discharge into rivers. Regional parameterization is made by using two approaches. One is to determine most parameters representing specific physical values on the basis of characterization of soil properties in unsaturated zone and aquifer, and vegetations. The other is to calibrate the remaining few parameters on the basis of comparison between measured and simulated streamflow and groundwater tables. The integrated modeling system was successfully used in the Linhuanji catchment of Huaihe plain region. Study results demonstrate that (1) on the average 14.2% of precipitation becomes surface runoff and baseflow during a ten-year period from 1986 to 1995 and this figure fluctuates between only 3.0% in drought years of 1986, 1988, 1993 and 1994 to 24.0% in wet year of 1991; (2) groundwater directly deriving from precipitation recharge is about 15.0% t of the precipitation amount, and (3) about half of the groundwater recharge flows into rivers and loses through evaporation.

Groundwater flow due to hydraulic gradients across a geologic barrier surrounding a dam reservoir can cause swamps or wetlands to form on the downstream side of the dam, thereby restricting land use. The difference in head between the reservoir level and the downstream groundwater level creates a hydraulic gradient, allowing water to flow through the geologic barrier. We constructed a drainage system at the Daecheong dam to study the effects on groundwater levels and soil moisture contents. The drainage system consisted of a buried screened pipe spanning a depth of 1-1.5 m below a land surface. Groundwater levels were monitored at several monitoring wells before and after the drainage system was installed. Most well sites recorded a decline in groundwater level on the order of 1 m. The high-elevated site (monitoring well W1) close to the reservoir showed a significant decline in groundwater level of more than 2 m, likely due to rapid discharge by the drainage system. Soil moisture contents were also analyzed and found to have decreased after the installation of the drainage system, even considering standard deviations in the soil moisture contents. We conclude that the drainage system effectively lowered groundwater levels on the downstream side of the dam. Furthermore, we emphasize that water seepage analyses are critical to embankment dam design and construction, especially in areas where downstream land use is of interest.
According to recent ground collapse occurrence, ground subsidence is increasing every year in downtown area, which is a social problem. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between ground water level lowering and ground collapse through laboratory model experiments. After mixing 1:1 granite weathered soil with sand, sandy soil was formed as a relative density of 30%, 50%, and 80%. And then the changes of soil discharge with change of groundwater level were compared. The physical property of material of which particle distribution were well graded with maximu dry unit weight of $1.94kg/cm^3$ and internal friction angle of 37degrees. Ground water levels were measured at 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm from the bottom. As a result, the experiment shows that the higher the groundwater level works the higher the discharge velocity and the magnitude of underground cavity also increases with elapsed time. Finally, the cumulative quantity of soil discharge occurred up to 30 kg at the elapsed time, 35 minutes. It was also confirmed that the range of ground collapse increased due to soil discharge with ground water level lowering.

Global climate change is disturbing the water circulation balance by changing rates of precipitation, recharge and discharge, and evapotranspiration. Groundwater, which occupies a considerable portion of the world's water resources, is related to climate change via surface water such as rivers, lakes, and marshes. In this study, the authors selected a relevant climate change scenario, A1B from the Special Report on Emission Scenario (SRES) which is distributed at Korea Meteorological Administration. By using data on temperature, rainfall, soil, and land use, the groundwater recharge rate for the research area was estimated by periodically and embodied as geographic information system (GIS). In order to calculate the groundwater recharge quantity, Visual HELP3 was used as main model, and the physical properties of weather, temperature, and soil layers were used as main input data. General changes to water circulation due to climate change have already been predicted. In order to systematically solve problems of ground circulation system, it may be urgent to recalculate the groundwater recharge quantity and consequent change under future climate change. The space-time calculation of changes of the groundwater recharge quantity in the study area may serve as a foundation to present additional measures to improve domestic groundwater resource management.
We performed numerical simulations of the excavation of an underground structure (the Giheung Tunnel) in order to evaluate the rate of groundwater flow into the structure and to estimate the groundwater level around the structure. The tunnel was constructed in Precambrian bedrock in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Geological and electrical resistivity data, as well as hydraulic test data, were used for the numerical modeling. The modeling took into account the strike-slip faults that cross the southern part of Giheung Tunnel, as these structures influence the discharge of groundwater into the tunnel. The transient modeling estimated a groundwater flow rate into the tunnel of $306\;m^3$/day, with a grout efficiency of 40%, yielding good agreement between the calculated change in groundwater level (6.20 m) and that observed (6.30 m) due to tunnel excavation.
