  • This study investigated the effect of the grinding media of a ball mill under various conditions on the raw material of copper powder during the milling process with a simulation of the discrete element method. Using the simulation of the three-dimensional motion of the grinding media in the stirred ball mill, we researched the grinding mechanism to calculate the force, kinetic energy, and medium velocity of the grinding media. The grinding behavior of the copper powder was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. We found that the particle size increased with an increasing rotation speed and milling time, and the particle morphology of the copper powder became more of a plate type. Nevertheless, the particle morphology slightly depended on the different grinding media of the ball mill. Moreover, the simulation results showed that rotation speed and ball size increased with the force and energy.

  • To realize high speed and high bandwidth in the 2.xD package structure, methods requiring high technology are being studied for processes such as interposer or bridge die bonding, as well as heterogeneous chip bonding. Particularly, the grinding process of bonding surfaces is considered a key technology. The method of bonding an interposer or bridge die including Cu layers to a substrate and then exposing metallic materials such as Cu, which can be electrically connected, through a grinding process to connect heterogeneous chips is an approach that utilizes conventional packaging techniques. However, to meet the yield and quality standards required for mass production in processes involving the large-scale bonding of micro-bumps, as seen in 2.xD packages, it is essential to develop techniques based on high precision. This paper investigates the multi-material grinding process for heterogeneous chip bonding in a 2.xD package structure, using the grit size of the grinding wheel as a variable. The study examines the surface patterns and bonding characteristics of the exposed materials achieved through the grinding process. Through this study, we aim to optimize the grinding process for high-quality bonding, thereby contributing to the development of advanced packaging technologies.

  • Industry is now seeing a dramatic increase in robot simulation and off-line programming. In order to use off-line programming effectively, the simulated workcell has to be identical to the real workcell. This requires an efficient and accurate method for the workcell calibration. Currently used techniques in the industry, however, are typically time-consuming, expensive and therefore not suitable for in-process application. This is because most of these techniques are based on the so-called “absolute calibration” method. In contrast to absolute method, relative calibration only measures the difference of an interested object relative to a standard reference. Owing to the small measurement range requirement, relative calibration method is very cheap and can achieve very high accuracy. In this paper the relative method is applied to calibrate an entire grinding workcell. Linear gauge is the only measurement device used. This workcell calibration includes tool center point (TCP) calibration and work object frame calibration. Due to the efficiency of the calibration algorithm and the simplicity of the calibration setup, the described calibration procedure can be done in process.

  • The vertical roller mill, which performs the grinding and partly blending of raw material, is the one of the important machine to produce ordinary portland cement. It has been reported that an unexpected fatigue failure occurred in a table liner in the course of grinding portland cement. The life of table liner is estimated to $4{\times}10^7$ cycles in the design stage, but at the field, when its operating time reaches to $2{\times}10^6{\sim}8{\times}10^6$ cycles, the fracture of table liner begins to be found. The fracture of table liner is initiated from the outside edge of grinding path contacting with the grinding roller. Its maintenance normally take 30 % of the total maintenance costs of the roller mill. Therefore, this study shows the clarification of the reasons occurring the fatal destruction of the table liner by fatigue fracture analysis utilizing fracture mechanics and by the finite element method. And, the results from Goodman diagram illustrate relationship of including information on the transition between tensile and bending fatigue strength in the fatigue characterization of table liner.

  • In this paper, a multi-step optimization using genetic algorithm with variable penalty function is introduced to the structural design optimization of a grinding machine. The design problem, in this study, is to find out the optimum configuration and dimensions of structural members which minimize the static compliance, the dynamic compliance, and the weight of the machine structure simultaneously under several design constraints such as dimensional constraints, maximum deflection limit, safety criterion, and maximum vibration amplitude limit. The first step is shape optimization, in which the best structural configuration is found by getting rid of structural members that have no contributions to the design objectives from the given initial design configuration. The second and third steps are sizing optimization. The second design step gives a set of good design solutions having higher fitness for lightweight and minimum static compliance. Finally the best solution, which has minimum dynamic compliance and weight, is extracted from the good solution set. The proposed design optimization method was successfully applied to the structural design optimization of a grinding machine. After optimization, both static and dynamic compliances are reduced more than 58.4% compared with the initial design, which was designed empirically by experienced engineers. Moreover the weight of the optimized structure are also slightly reduced than before.

  • 3.2YSZ melted by the 'skull melting' method has good physical properties and does not undergo low-temperature degradation. Due to its excellent physical and mechanical properties, skull-melted 3.2YSZ has been developed as a dental implant material. In this study, a porous, resin-bonded diamond wheel was created and its grinding characteristics were compared with those of traditional nonporous wheels using skull-melted 3.2YSZ. The experimental results indicate that the porous, resin-bonded diamond wheel requires less grinding force and power. In addition, the porous, resin-bonded diamond wheel requires a greater degree of roughness.

  • This study has focused on the effect of ultrasonic vibration table in ELID grinding process of aluminum nitride ceramics. Aluminum nitride ceramics has superior physical and chemical properties and widely used in IC, LSI substrate, package and so on. To achieve the high effective machining of brittle and high strength ceramics as like aluminum nitride, machining method combined ELID grinding and ultrasonic vibration has been adopted in this study. From the experimental results, material removal rate, MRR has been increased maximum 36 percent and spindle resistance has been decreased in using ultrasonic table. Surface roughness of ground surface became a little worse in using ultrasonic table but was somewhat improved in feed direction.

  • In this paper, a pulsed picosecond laser dressing method for bronze-bonded diamond wheel is studied systematically and comprehensively. The picosecond laser pulse ablation experiment is carried out, and the ablation thresholds of bronze-bonded and diamond abrasive particle are measured respectively. The results indicate that the single-pulse ablation thresholds of bronze-bonded are 0.89J/cm2, 0.24J/cm2 during strong/weak ablation stages. And the multi-pulse ablation thresholds of diamond abrasive particle are 1.69J/cm2, 0.49J/cm2 during strong/weak ablation stages. Obviously, diamond grains have less thermal damage during the process of gentle ablation. The diamond grains of the grinding wheel surface are graphitized during laser dressing. The bronze-bonded is relatively smooth and organizational stability, and the diamond grits have suitable prominent height, which are beneficial to maintain the good grinding performance of dressed bronze-bonded diamond grinding wheels.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to provide the basic data for dental barrel finishing by observing the abrasiveness of the metal body according to the time of the barrel finishing. Methods: This study included three types of Co-Cr alloys. The specimens were manufactured by casting method using 10-mm diameter wax spheres (n=10). The cast alloys were polished for 60 minutes at intervals of 5 minutes in barrel finishing. The weight and volume of the specimens were measured, and the rate of change was calculated. The data obtained from the three groups (α=0.05) were compared and analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: As a result, the overall volume and weight of the group decreased after grinding compared with the control group. Conclusion: When grinding dental barrel finishing, no difference was observed in the processing rate depending on the type of alloy and the processing rate of the alloy body is within 30 minutes; hence, dental barrel finishing can be effectively used for grinding.
