  • CSVd-infected chrysanthemum plants grown under $10^{\circ}C\;or\;15^{\circ}C$ growth chamber for 2 months resulted a higher dilution endpoint of template RNA for Reverse transcription and polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) than those grown for 1 month: $10^{-4}(1.35{\times}10^{-2}ug/ml)$ for 1 month, and $10^{-3}(1.35{\times}10^{-1}ug/ml)$ for 2 months. Independent experiment, shoots cut from CSVd (Chrysanthemum stunt viroid)-in footed chrysanthemum plants grown under $10^{\circ}C\;or\;20^{\circ}C$ growth chamber for 2 months showed the same CSVd concentration as control($30^{\circ}C$) at 8 weeks after moving them to normal green-house condition($30^{\circ}C$). From those results, it was concluded that even though the concentration of CSVd was reduced in plants grown at low temperatures, when they were moved to normal glass-house temperature CSVd concentration increased to that of untreated plants in 8 weeks. This conclusion was supported by the rapid replication of CSVd in chrysanthemum after infection.

  • Phytoplasma was identified from leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cultivated in commercial green-house in Korea. Diseased leaf lettuce revealed proliferation of shoots, and yellowing and shrinking of leaves (lettuce proliferation-K). Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with universal primer pair P1/P6, and aster yellows (AY) specific primer pair R16F1/R1 amplified 1.5kb and 1.1kb length of DNA fragments, respectively. Nucleotide sequences of 16S rRNA gene were determined (Gen Bank accession no EF489024). Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA showed the closest relationship with AY phytoplasma (GenBank accession no. AY389822 and AY389826), indicating that lettuce proliferation-K is a member of AY. Phytoplasma bodies were detected in phloem sieve tubes of diseased lettuce by transmission electron microscopy. The structures had round or pleomorphic shapes with a diameter of 130-300nm. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene, microscopic observation of phytoplasma bodies and symptomatology indicated that lettuce proliferation-K is caused by phytoplasma in the AY group. This is the first report of phytoplasma disease in lettuce in Korea.

  • The present experimental study proposed two ionic liquids (ILs) namely [Aliquat 336] [$HSO_4$] (prepared and characterized at our laboratory) and Cyphos 101 IL (supplied by Cytec Company) dissolved in two different diluents such as DCM (di-chloro-methane) and toluene applied for PMs extraction. The first IL [Aliquat 336] [$HSO_4$] prepared and confirmed the formation of final product by using FT-IR and TGA studies. The primary experiment in solvent extraction processing is kinetic effect; 0 to 30 time varied for PMs by using two ILs and confirmed the optimized extraction equilibrium time. This study was conducted for PMs (Pt, Rh and Cu) extraction and separation from each other by using proposed ILs. This is the primary study of the utilizing green solvents such as ILs as an extractant system for Pt, Rh and Cu extraction and possible separation.

  • This study aimed to develop an agroforestry technology through the participation of local people. The study was conducted in the Makiling Forest Reserve (MFR) of the University of the Philippines Los Banos (UPLB). Diagnosis and Design (D&D) methodology was employed to plan and implement effective research and development projects. Diagnostic interview and direct field observation were conducted to identify the significance of the land-use system and to understand how the system works. As a result of the diagnostic interview and direct field observation in San Vicente, old coconut-based land-use system is shifting to mahogany-based agroforestry system. One of the reasons is due to the very complicated socio-economic and silvicultural factors including lower price of coconut farm products, industry development, lack of labor force, and pest and diseases. Change in land use brought about by the shifting to mahogany-based farming system is slow. Also, mahogany trees are observed to be not well-maintained. However, mahogany based land use system gives farmers' a bigger income as well as environmental benefit. Farmer's cooperation and local forestry policy for CDM were proposed to encourage people's self-restoration effort.

  • Recently, in forest areas of Gyeonggi-Do where golf courses are developed indiscriminately due to the rapid increase in demand, two and three golf courses are being concentrated and combined to develop and it's occurring lots of problems. This study therefore, aims to examine their problems and propose environment-friendly improvements of combined development, by analyzing laws related to golf course's location and the current location status. The results of this study are as followings; Firstly, when analyzing related laws, it was found that unified standards should be established in relation to regulation of the external conditions of golf course sites and individual index. Secondly, standards of a proper separated distance are needed, when developing golf courses. Thirdly, we need to preferentially preserve areas where should be protected environmentally, and establish criteria approving golf courses built close to the boundary of a buffer area only, by introducing the concepts of a buffer area based on the UNESCO MAB. Lastly, we have to set up criteria considering Network elements for maintaining the connectivity of the ecosystem.

  • In this study, a comprehensive model developed to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from urban area with low impact development (LID) and its integrated management practices (IMPs). The model was applied to the actual urban area in Asan Tangjeong district (ATD) as a case study. A rainwater tank (1200 ton) among various LID IMPs generated the highest amount of GHG emissions ($3.77{\times}10^5kgCO_2eq$) and led to the utmost reducing effect ($1.49{\times}10^3kgCO_2eq/year$). In the urban area with LID IMPs, annually $1.95{\times}104kgCO_2eq$ of avoided GHG emissions were generated by a reducing effect (e.g., tap water substitution and vegetation $CO_2$ absorption) for a payback period of 162 years. A sensitivity analysis was carried out to quantitatively evaluate the significance of the factors on the overall GHG emissions in ATD, and suggested to plant alternative vegetation on LID IMPs.

  • In 2000s, the interest of ROHAS has been increased and the environmental problem has begun to be discussed as the environmental and global value, not the individual perspective. And the standard of value for eco-friendly awareness has been expanded to the economic category. The trend of eco-friendly fabric can be divided into 3 periods depending on the property. The period for natural fabric with visual effects(2002~2004) can be summarized as the creation of natural shape using the natural image, the interaction of cotton and the technology from the visual perspective. In the period of functional conjunction with eco-friendliness and technology(2005~2008), the eco-friendly awareness through the conjunction of technology and nature and the re-cycling, and the responsibility to the environment had been increased. In the period of sustainable development for nature and environment(2009~2011), it showed the conjunction with nature and the integration with technology and eco-friendly issues. Therefore, the characteristic of eco-friendly trend in fabric since 2000 can be said; firstly, the high-quality fabric has been developed with technological development for the functional progress. Secondly, the ethical creativity has been displayed with the development and utilization of eco-friendly recycling materials. Thirdly, the materials reflected with eco-friendly issues have emerged.
